I totally agree with your post. They would be a middle of the road team in any major confrenceBarnes could have (and should have) beat Memphis last year with arguably their most talented roster in decades even sans Wiseman. Penny has the AAU connections and will continue to recruit well, but he is a terrible coach. He’ll continue to lose games in his weak conference when he should be running the table with the talent he is going to get. Come to the ACC, SEC, or Big-10 and Memphis would be middle of the road at best
Mumfuss state.Kennedy Chandlers Top Ten
From Tiger high board
Love the one Memphis St fan saying Chandler better get used to losing
Exactly. The question is still out on whether or not Penny can coach. According to 92.9 FM in Memphis (their version of State Radio), Penny did not prioritize Kennedy and that his father had confirmed that over the last year. Now it could be that Penny waited too long to get serious and it was too late by then. The question is if Penny made a mistake in not prioritizing him from the jump. He supposedly is after a couple of other guys that he thinks “fit” better according to State Radio but there’s a good chance he won’t get those targets. I would submit that he chose poorly in not prioritizing the #1 PG in the country who was in his back yard but we’ll see. Personally, I’m more impressed that Rick got him away from NC, Duke and Ky. To be fair, the hosts on State Radio did give Barnes credit that he is “tearing it up” in recruiting and that he did a good job from the start on Kennedy. And one of them said that Kennedy is a “can’t miss” prospect so they weren’t going the route of “He’s not good enough to play at Memphis”. They just said Penny made a choice and he’ll have to live with it.Barnes could have (and should have) beat Memphis last year with arguably their most talented roster in decades even sans Wiseman. Yes, Harris was an absolute phenom. To me, the difference might be Chandler's ability to penetrate and involve others as a result. Also, Chandler's intellect will make him a complete player unlike any other PG in Vol history. Still, Tony was electric....I mean electric. Such a pleasure to watch him play.Tony Harris was up there but I think Kennedy is higher
There was no choice on Hardaway's "decision." He had no decision to prioritize (or not) because Chandler was probably not going to Memphis. Another case of Hardaway ego.Exactly. Trust me. Misplaced as it is, their fans absolutely think their program is in the same stratosphere as the blue bloods. They’ve been to one Final Four legitimately where they didn’t cheat like heck to get there.I totally agree with your post. They would be a middle of the road team in any major confrence
Agreed. I think Kennedy is not cut from the same mold of the normal Memphis high school player who usually always want to stay in Memphis to play. And I’m sure Penny thinks he can get a player in his place. But with that line of thinking, he let Matthew Morrell get away to Ole Miss this year and then struck out on two 5 stars from outside the city. There was no choice on Hardaway's "decision." He had no decision to prioritize (or not) because Chandler was probably not going to Memphis. Another case of Hardaway ego.
They have always been a dirty program. The thing is they dont have to be.The hs talent in Memphis and surrounding areas is some of the best in the country. A few years ago they had 3 teams from the same district as top 100 high school programs in the country.Trust me. True, there are plenty of players here to stock a team. But it appears the tactic now is to coax 5 star talent from somewhere else and stash them in a Memphis high school. James Wiseman, Moussa Cisse. Plenty fishy there. Why would a kid leave one of the best private schools in Nashville (Ensworth) to go to East High School? Just to be coached in high school by Penny Hardaway? Doubtful. And a transplant from Africa (via NYC) getting a scholarship to go to an expensive school like Lausanne? I’m sure there’s nothing funny going on there. They have always been a dirty program. Like I said they have always been dirty.Just a matter of time until they get caught and put on probation again. They are not a Blueblood program with a long rich history. They are the kind of school the ncaa uses to make an example of. It's not fair but its true.True, there are plenty of players here to stock a team. But it appears the tactic now is to coax 5 star talent from somewhere else and stash them in a Memphis high school. Oh, I don’t think the NCAA is done with them or Penny yet on the Wiseman thing. They basically thumbed their noses at the NCAA and played him. That and Penny being considered a booster when he paid for his family to move to Memphis.Like I said they have always been dirty.Just a matter of time until they get caught and put on probation again. I just want to take a moment to emphasize the magnitude of this and to point out that Rick Barnes went into the city of Memphis and landed the #1 PG in the country. A player Memphis coveted, and beat not only Memphis (his hometown) for him, but Duke (his dream school), Kentucky, and North Carolina. That’s 3 blue bloods and his hometown school that few recruits escape from when Memphis really wants them. And he did it with two 5* and two 4*guards already on the roster.
Wow, just wow. This is easily Barnes’s beat recruiting job to date based on the obstacles and competition.

It doesn’t matter, but I would say this is more impressive...NYC kids go all over the country, not 1 single school like Memphis that hand picks them. This was a guy Penny and Memphis desperately wanted, Barnes did something no coach at UT has probably ever done in this recruitment. It’s the best recruiting job since Pearl got Tobias from New York with no ties. It’s beyond impressive getting a player of Kennedy’s caliber out of Memphis.
Good stuff, my friend. For years I went to the B Ball state tourney and saw several good players including several that had NBA careers. Harris was the best that I saw in all those years. He was unstoppable. Maybin was another great one, and big John Henderson might have been the best athlete amongst the big guys (including Reggie White who I played against several times).
I hope they throw the book at them. The ncaa is kind of toothless now.I mean look what severe punishment they dealt out to Will Wade and Lsu plus the Wiseman deal at Memphis.Oh, I don’t think the NCAA is done with them or Penny yet on the Wiseman thing. They basically thumbed their noses at the NCAA and played him. That and Penny being considered a booster when he paid for his family to move to Memphis.
