'21 TN PG Kennedy Chandler (Tennessee commit 08.14.20)

I’m curious as to Memphis’ plans, if they are still working on travel and getting home and meanwhile 4 coaches walk in to see Chandler that would also add to the drama. I definitely think Tennessee will be in it until the end, he’s on another level than Springer/James/Johnson as a recruit, this probably will be the toughest pull of them all.

I mean, is he really that far ahead of Springer? He is currently #15 on the 247 Rankings which is exactly where Springer spent most of the year before falling to #17.

I’m not referring to their quality as a player or ranking, I mean as far as the difficulty in landing. There were some advantages with Springer, not as many with Chandler, a guy like Banchero there aren’t really any.

Chandler is really about the same level prospect as Springer. Springer had the same blue blood offers like Kansas, UNC, etc early on just like KC. The thing is, the longer they wait to commit, spots in classes like Duke and UNC fill up with 5 stars fairly quickly, especially with point guards. Springer elected to wait, and spots in those classes filled up. If you are a truly special recruit they may really prioritize you and save a spot, I don’t think KC is that level. I think Paolo Banchero may be.

I think if he doesn’t commit to a spot like Duke somewhat early on we have a very solid chance landing him in the end.

Paulo Banchero is the 3rd ranked player in next year's class. He can decide whenever he wants and any team will welcome him with open arms. I promise you teams like Duke will not be turning him away because he waited to long to decide lol.

EDIT: Got confused by the wording of those last two sentences. I now see you are referring to Chandler not having a spot and Banchero being saved one. Disregard.

And why, IYO, is that? Strictly the fact the kid is from Memphis?
We had a bit on an “in” with Springer in the fact that Bobby Maze was his AAU Coach and he was AAU teammates with Pember. Those things individually may not strike a particular chord, but collectively when combined with our recent success on the court, positive publicity, recent NBA Draft success, and proximity to his home in Charlotte, they all made a difference.

We don’t have proximity or the AAU angle to work with Chandler, so that would make him more difficult to land, in addition to our lack of general success with Memphis kids. Now, we just added a couple advantages in Omari Thomas and Jabari Small jumping on board with the football team, so that can’t hurt our effort. KC is friends with both guys, so he will have some familiarity and we are obviously establishing a strong relationship with KC well in advance of his decision. Hopefully, he values that.

You rarely see coaches go out recruiting after a game, especially somewhere that requires some travel...Barnes and all 3 assistants are going straight to the airport after the game, grabbing a private jet and all 4 gonna walk in to Chandler’s game...that’s a strong move.
Really? This is happening?

In comparison to Springer? Jaden lived in Nashville early on, his played all his AAU ball for a program sponsored and coached by a VFL, his father was also involved with that AAU program and worked closely with said VFL...in conjunction he was on campus multiple times starting at a very young age. He also opted to play his final 2 years of HS ball outside of his home state.

I’m not referring to the offer list or ranking, but their situations...Springer had a spot at UNC as well.

“It has been crazy,” Chandler said about the recent uptick of interest in his recruitment. “A lot of schools have been reaching out, calling me, texting me, and right now, I am just enjoying the process and getting ready for the season ahead.” “My recruitment is wide open and I need to figure out what I want to focus on and prioritize upon in the future and find out what is the best fit for me,” Chandler stated.”
Chandler will take an official visit to Florida State on Feb. 2, and then head to Michigan two weeks later. “I am taking an unofficial visit to North Carolina for whenever they play Duke,” he said of his trip to Chapel Hill on Feb. 9. “I haven’t scheduled my visit to Duke yet.” “I will probably do that soon after my last official visit and see who I need to start focusing on.” Expect for a more concise school list to be produced prior to his travel season in March or April.

If Penny wants him, he's all Tiger IMO.
Not this kid. Hardaway wants him, but he is a little more street-wise than your average kid. Family and Chandler together will make the right decision for him. This is why I love the recruitment of this type of kid, because they make wise decisions based on logic, reason, and what is best for the recruit. They are not born pre-programmed to be a Memphis signee.

Nope. Probably the single biggest propagated untruth in his recruitment. I won’t say Memphis is not under consideration...I never count them out for Memphis recruit they really want...but I’d venture to guess they are maybe 3rd in the running, right now, behind UNC and Tennessee.

I would typically agree, but this kid doesn’t seem like local popular opinion will matter.

But what do you mean “If Penny wants him”? This reads like a early “we didn’t want him anyway” post. Not a school or coach in the country would turn this kid away. Imo

Kids comes from a good well-respected family and will weigh all the options for sure. I agree. He IS NOT like a "typical" Memphis area recruit.

I agree. I think we can rest assured if Coach Barnes is recruiting a kid, the kid will be different in his attitude, work ethic, and moral compass. At least that's been my take on the type kid he's looking for.
