'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

A big part of the reason we were missing from deep is because Michigan was playing good perimeter D. They didn’t have to respect our inside game. If we were able to score more inside that would’ve probably gotten us some better looks

The problem with this narrative is the simple fact that all of our 3 point attempts, except maybe 2, were in rhythm and uncontested. We simply missed open looks.

Didn't we score 40 in the paint?

We missed a good deal of open shots from the perimeter. There were a couple of late clock desperation shots from Véscovi but otherwise nothing stands out as poor shot selection. Sometimes in shooting you're just unlucky.

Well that’s not true. Maybe half were good looks. And you could tell we were rushing some shots even when open due to their length and closing out quickly.

And for whatever reason we shoot considerably worse from that corner Zeigler took his shots from. Under 30%. Those were the 2 best looks we got all night.

Gainey pulled Aidoo
Not for the 2022 class, though, which has been the point of contention.

And yes, Gainey was key with Aidoo, but Tennessee was one of his finalists before committing to Marquette, so it isn't like he was totally unfamiliar with Barnes and the Tennessee program. The match with Gainey just made Tennessee a soft landing spot once Aidoo was forced to open up his recruitment following the coaching change at Marquette.

Gainey and Clarke not doing better in recruiting than they have thus far has been surprising to me. They’ll have to step up even more with Schwartz gone and Polinsky probably not being much of a recruiter. Seems like in the same amount of time Gainey/Clarke has had, Kim English made great inroads with Chandler (and was making great ones in future classes too clearly with Justyn Fernandez)

Yep, that's where I'm at. I've been disappointed with what they've done thus far on the recruiting trail. They may turn it around. I hope they do.

If we are unable to land Phillips/Reneau or any of the relatively good portal entrants this off-season after the season we just had, then I will be a little more concerned with our recruiting. Surely we can lobby the success and notoriety of this past year into a few good recruits/transfers.

If not…..I’ll start to worry a bit more.

Doesn’t help that we’re going up against schools whose coaches are known for cheating.

Guys want to see a fit, Phillips has exclusively mentioned wanting to go somewhere he can walk in and have a spot, is Tennessee gonna assure him of that, they’ve steered away from that in the past. Transfer guys also typically are looking for a pretty sure role, does Zeigler scare a guy off? Not saying that’s the case just playing other side of the coin here.

If he wants a spot, where is he gonna go? I can see a PG transfer starting, but 2-5 I think this roster is set. If that's why we lose him then so be it.

I get that, and I’m not saying we should lie to people, but if we can’t find a way to convince a recruit who wants a guaranteed spot or guaranteed minutes that coming to TN is still in your best interest then IMO we’re not doing a good job recruiting. I have a feeling a lot of athletes are looking for the spots where they can make an immediate impact. Not many dudes are going to want to just ride the bench.

I think it’s better long term to work on good faith. If you aren’t forthcoming or straight up lie to a player, the discord can impact a locker room potentially more than having the player there in the first place IMO

I think Tennessee has a very tight culture because most everyone who comes in knows that anything they get, they will have earned. You start convincing a high-profile kid he has a spot only for him to arrive and figure out he actually has to earn it, you potentially upset that culture you've worked hard to create if that kid isn't willing to put in the work. That was a concern with BHH, and it took him a while to buy in. Once he did, he was rewarded. Even still, there are people in his ear trying to convince him he made a mistake.

You are honest with him, and that’s what this staff is, and has been…sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t, but it leads to a good culture and fewer transfers for the most part.

I want to be clear that I am not and did not suggest we lie to a recruit about his role. I’m saying that while we need to be honest with him the role of a recruiter is to convince talent why Tennessee is the best fit for them. If we’re going to lose out on all the guys who just want immediate playing time, that drastically shrinks the pool of guys we pull from.

Which is why our offer list is very small compared to many schools…if a recruits main objective is early/immediate/guarantee playing time then maybe Tennessee isn’t the best fit for them?

I mean….whatever. JJJ, Vescovi, KC and ZZ all had open looks and missed. I don’t know what else to say. And ZZ had been making those corner 3s in recent games.

Vescovi was blanketed the whole game. And as I mentioned the ZZ open looks were in the low % corner. Chandler and JJJ missed a couple of open ones but let’s not pretend this was like the TTU game where we were wide open almost every shot and just couldn’t hit. Michigan played good perimeter defense and locked down our most important shooter.

im not gonna argue but we missed open looks from 3 all game. Believe what you want but the game was televised….the evidence is clear. Even ZZs top of the key open miss late in the game was a good look….

Yes it was clear. We had some open missed but no team shoots 100% when wide open. But we shot just as many contested 3’s. The game was televised.
