I assume they'd stop getting donations, the coaches would stop working with them, and somebody else would fill the void. That seems like a far fetched scenario and an easily solved one if it did ariseHypothetically, if the guys at Spyre are Barnes haters, what would stop them from withholding money from basketball NIL deals. Or if they don’t like the “cultural” fits that Barnes recruits. It’s a weird dynamic
We don’t know the details of the contracts. What competing offers are. Could easily be manipulated. And coaches technically aren’t allowed to be privy to the deals themselves. So theoretically they would never knowI mean all of us know what theyre up rn to just reading this board. I think it would get out quickly. Coach leaks it to VQ, for instance
And none rn, but were they to do something like that, I'm sure something would arise
I don't think that's quite true. Everybody knows what Nico got. Not crazy to think when we land a big high school basketball recruit with Spyre's help we'll know the amount too. But the point is that Barnes has no interest in having us know the details; in fact, it'd prob be a competitive disadvantage. Were Spyre to stop playing ball with him, it would behoove him to enable another NIL group to take his place, and part of that may be making it known that there is a need.We don’t know the details of the contracts. There was clearly some conflicting info about Phillips. How are donors to Spyre supposed to feel about the fact we may have been outbid? But it’s all total speculation as the details will probably never be disclosed. It’s not like pro sports contracts where there’s quite a bit of transparency about where teams stand in terms of payroll and contracts are known.I don't think that's quite true. Now that's not to say that Spyre wont have a say in athletic department decisions. I mean theyre essentially boosters, so that's not new. But I dont forsee there ever being a situation where we are just frozen out of NIL funds completely for any significant amount of time
That sucks monkey balls. I'm honestly surprised we're not more attractive to guys after this past season. I also question how dedicated Spyre is to basketball as compared to football? I remember Doug Dickey once said, "As long as football is winning, nothing else really matters". Wonder if Spyre has that same attitude?Fwiw was told tonight that Phillips isn’t coming here, will end up at Auburn…as I’ve said a few times with this recruitment hope to be wrong, but not feeling good.
It's my understanding that with donations comes perks, so regardless donors aren't completely shafted if pursuits of recruits fail. Now if we never land a significant high school basketball recruit with Spyre's help after several years, then there will be an obvious level of concern for donors who care primarily about basketball (though there seems to already be football returns. Idk if you can split your donations by sport). But that is very unlikely. I wouldnt worry that much about it, I'm sure there is a high level of coordination between Spyre and Barnes, and if something were awry we would know about it.There was clearly some conflicting info about Phillips. Sure it's weird, but the money is certainly more transparent now than it was a year ago. And I think it helps level the playing field a little bit between programs that were really down in the muck and programs that were run on the cleaner sideIt’s not uncommon to hear about coaches who lose the support of boosters. Now NIL is a proxy for them and they’re also pooling money from MANY small donors. And these collectives don’t operate it complete transparency, even to the donors. You have to admit it’s a very new and strange dynamic
More transparent is relative. Still doesn’t appear to be transparent. And weigh that with significantly more influence and power than any one booster had before, and now they can enter into contracts. The amount of power they have is very significant.
