'22 SC SF Julian Phillips (Tennessee commit)

I think we need to get over our collective BVS with Auburn. He very well could choose Auburn, but that university is a dumpster fire right now with their administration. They just tried to literally conduct a coup to unseat their head football coach after one bad season. Danny White has us rowing in the right direction and firing on all cylinders. I'm choosing to believe we're not going to continue to take a backseat to Auburn in all sports anymore. With NIL a thing now, their Cabin in the Woods advantage is gone.
I’ve never been super into recruiting but NIL is causing me to become even more indifferent to it. Whoever ends up on campus is not entirely due to the coaches. It’s now in large part contingent on a private company that I have 0 connection with. So whoever we’re allotted I’ll just pay attention to what the coaching staff can do with them.

You can change that by being connected to them and make a contribution :)

From what I heard previously, his family had specific requests about type/structure/size of NIL deal. As of yesterday, the staff had a heavy shift in enthusiasm because of something new/material that Spyre offered. They think he’s ours, and that due to the relationship and the NIL, Auburn will not be able to sway him. I'm one step removed from the source, but heard from someone close that they are very optimistic as of yesterday.
State of Alabama can’t pass the legislation that we just passed today that quick. He’s ours

Phillips just informed staff he will visit Kansas State following Auburn. Finding it hard to read this freakshow.
I saw where K State fans have been pretty confident on the kid for awhile. I see no reason to be visiting new schools if he’s actually going to one of the original finalists.

If he’s going to do this, it’s probably time to use the leverage NIL provides. Put an expiration on the offer, before he takes any visits. If it’s truly his best package, he may reconsider. If not, he probably wasn’t coming here anyway and it’s time to start doing an analysis of other targets and associated offers.

My friend said the official word from Phillips camp is that he will visit Auburn and KState because he has former teammates and friends at both schools. He still believes we’ll sign him, and that Phillips will decide next week. He said Phillips is in contact with coaches daily. I still don’t like the Auburn visit.

On the other hand, you have to like the fact that he is at least informing our staff of his plans. If he was just neutral toward Tennessee, he’d stop answering the phone and sharing his plans.

Probably not a coincidence, but given who the new coach is at KState, and the other schools that Phillips has been connected with, it isn’t hard to see what his goal is, right now. He’s pimping himself to the highest bidder, and even with Spyre and Tennessee trying to compete in the realm the right way, I just have a hard time seeing us being the last team standing in the end.

Kansas State just seems like such an out of the blue pick if it is the pick. It does seem like the kid is only interested in NIL at this point. I can’t imagine they have a better NIL program or offer than Tennessee or Auburn. Weird recruitment.

So maybe it's time to change that!

I hate NIL as well. It seems like should be a better alternative between keeping the kids from getting any extra benefits for the millions they generate for a university and opening it up to a wild west of millions of NIL money with kids like Nico going to the highest bidder. IMO if athletes want to come to college they can get a stipend for $x or otherwise they try their pro prospects. With the G league etc there are options. If they do go to college they are not eligible for a draft for a couple of years. I anticipate a lot of locker room animosity between players getting NIL and those that aren't. Especially when the NIL players are not producing or giving the effort.

Kinda doubt that’s the approach we will take.

They are not kids….they should have every right to make money like any regular 18 year old can

I didn't say they didn't have the rights to do it. But there is nothing normal about an 18 year old getting paid $8 million to attend a university and play football. I would like to find some middle ground. I don't like the way college sports, particularly basketball and football is trending where kids are going to the highest bidder and these athletes care nothing about the university they represent except getting a pay day. I guess we are all Kentucky basketball now and I don't like it but maybe it is just me.
