'22 TX CG Cason Wallace

Well, the ‘Cats offered and Wallace quickly set up a visit. Wallace is close with former Wildcat Tyrese Maxey, the ‘Cats’ most significant tie. Obviously Tennessee would prefer that this wasn’t happening, but if you’re going to recruit top talent you expect to be in some battles.

While it’s not ideal, it’s not a disaster. Kentucky is going to have some obvious allure for any prospect so it’s not surprising that Wallace is going to check them out. What Tennessee has going for them is a longstanding relationship between Wallace and Rod Clark, dating back to when Wallace was in 8th grade. Additionally they can sell the fact that they offered early and have pursued him aggressively whereas Kentucky dragged their feet on offering him and have pretty clearly prioritized some other guards over him.

It will also be to the Vols’ advantage that they’ll be able to get him back on campus for a second official visit following his proposed trip to Lexington.

"He had a slow start to the spring so it was good to see him pick up his play and be the player scouts and coaches know he can be and get back in the swing of things," Jenkins told CatsPause.com. "His play wasn't the strongest in the spring but we've seen his best brand of basketball when it mattered most. He's definitely a guy who impacts winning on both ends of the floor."

With his play over the last month, Wallace, who is already ranked No. 18 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite, has once again established himself as one of the best two-way guards in the 2022 class.

"He's a terrific pull-up jump shooter. His perimeter shooting is fine. He definitely proved that at Peach Jam. can play off ball screens and make others better. Some evaluate him as a point guard. I think he's a combo," Jenkins said. "He is capable of locking up. He can make plays on the ball, guards with length and sets the tone on that end of the floor when he's locked in and engaged, meeting guys at the rim. He can make things happen on both ends."

His play of late led to a long-awaited scholarship offer from Kentucky on July 24. From the Harrison twins to De'Aaron Fox to Tyrese Maxey, the Wildcats have had a lot of success with Texas guards. That, and his relationship with UK assistant and fellow Lone Star native, Jai Lucas, has put Kentucky in prime position for his commitment.

"It would be a combination of both," Jenkins said of Wallace's interest in the Wildcats. "His mentality of always wanting to prove himself when someone says he's not capable, his relationship with Jai, and the pedigree they have with the one-and-done culture."

On the strength of his relationships with head coach Rick Barnes and assistant Rod Clark, Tennessee has also established itself as a forced to be reckoned with in Wallace's recruitment. The Volunteers, who hosted Wallace for his first official visit in June, have been recruiting Wallace harder and longer than any other school.

Will Kentucky's recent offer be enough to overtake Tennessee?

"I think the two that have the best shot are Kentucky and Tennessee," Jenkins said. "Kentucky has a slight edge at this point."

"Kentucky has a slight edge at this point."

If true, a big if, he gone. The fact that all it took to overtake the relationship he built with Clark after being slow-played for months was an offer (and no visit) says enough. I am hopeful this is just a mis-read of the situation, but none of that reads as promising.

Yep, it’s what concerned me when he had UK near the top without visiting and without an offer, even back during the spring. It’s also why I’d have pushed harder for, and prioritized Jalen Hood-Schifino. Wallace has been waiting on that offer and I don’t think it’s just for the status of earning an offer from them. UK has been the leader in this thing all along, I’m afraid, and I’d venture to guess that they’d have to completely screw up his OV to miss on him.

In honor of BGS, 'He gone'. Really wanted this one, but oh well. We will be fine.

I've heard we still have the edge, but the threat of UK was and is very real. Wallace literally said that UK was his "dream school" previously. That right there should have been all anybody needed to know in terms of UK being a threat if they ever offered.

However, the relationship with Clark is deep. The Wallace's consider him and call Rod family. I don't think the pendulum has swung as far as the UK stories would leave you to believe at this point.

Wish Barnes would negative recruit against Cal but he’s too classy of a guy to do that.

Who is "Jenkins" in that article? I was under the impression that was someone in Wallace's camp. If it is just another UK analyst, then I feel a little better that it is merely the opinion of a biased party.

Like I said earlier though (as early as several months ago), and you restated above, his feelings about UK are public and effusive. He's never hid his affinity for them, and that was when they didn't even want him. I have a hard time believing that we will find a way to overcome that if they put on the full-court press.

I'm pretty sure it's Brandon Jenkins, who is a 247 recruiting analyst in the DFW area.

Gotcha, thanks. Not a subscriber and in the snippet provided, it didn't give any insight as to who Jenkins was. I took a little too much liberty in assuming it was someone tied to Wallace (coach, mentor, relative). It feels better to know that is his opinion and nothing directly from Wallace's camp, even though it could have come directly from there.

Any news on Hood-Schifino? RB still recruiting him?

Very possible we went all in on Wallace and that costs both Wallace and JHS. But last recruiting class we had no shot at a guy like Jonas Aidoo until stuff was shaken up. I don’t see a reason to panic until the end of this recruiting cycle. A lot of moves to be made.

Are we going to hold off UK?

“I don't know. It's going to be a battle. I think Tennessee feels good about the strength of their relationships with he and his family but Kentucky has some obvious allure to a prospect. If he doesn't commit on or immediately after his visit later this month then I like Tennessee's chances.”
