"He had a slow start to the spring so it was good to see him pick up his play and be the player scouts and coaches know he can be and get back in the swing of things," Jenkins told
CatsPause.com. "His play wasn't the strongest in the spring but we've seen his best brand of basketball when it mattered most. He's definitely a guy who impacts winning on both ends of the floor."
With his play over the last month, Wallace, who is already ranked No. 18 nationally according to the 247Sports Composite, has once again established himself as one of the best two-way guards in the 2022 class.
"He's a terrific pull-up jump shooter. His perimeter shooting is fine. He definitely proved that at Peach Jam. can play off ball screens and make others better. Some evaluate him as a point guard. I think he's a combo," Jenkins said. "He is capable of locking up. He can make plays on the ball, guards with length and sets the tone on that end of the floor when he's locked in and engaged, meeting guys at the rim. He can make things happen on both ends."
His play of late led to a long-awaited scholarship offer from Kentucky on July 24. From the Harrison twins to
De'Aaron Fox to
Tyrese Maxey, the Wildcats have had a lot of success with Texas guards. That, and his relationship with UK assistant and fellow Lone Star native,
Jai Lucas, has put Kentucky in prime position for his commitment.
"It would be a combination of both," Jenkins said of Wallace's interest in the Wildcats. "His mentality of always wanting to prove himself when someone says he's not capable, his relationship with Jai, and the pedigree they have with the one-and-done culture."
On the strength of his relationships with head coach
Rick Barnes and assistant
Rod Clark, Tennessee has also established itself as a forced to be reckoned with in Wallace's recruitment. The Volunteers, who hosted Wallace for his first official visit in June, have been recruiting Wallace harder and longer than any other school.
Will Kentucky's recent offer be enough to overtake Tennessee?
"I think the two that have the best shot are Kentucky and Tennessee," Jenkins said. "Kentucky has a slight edge at this point."
