I know there are quite a few younger UT fans on the VN and some of you may like 311. I got into a brief discussion with a few in the FB Forum and thought I'd make a thread here.

I started with 311 my HS freshman year in 2000-2001. I have listened to/owned all albums up to Evolver. I can't say I have listened to any of their new stuff. I have been to three shows in Atlanta; one at the Tabernacle, and two at Lakewood. I haven't attended any 311 Day shows. Best albums for me are Music and Grassroots.

So, do we have some fans?

Favorite albums?

Any good shows you attended?

What is your opinion of some of their new stuff?

Thanks
[Edit: I added an awesome picture that reflects the band's personality]

I liked 311 in HS. 1996-2000. But they got old to me. Interestingly since I stopped caring for them, I've seen them in concert twice. They were both good shows.

Yeah, I mean I don't want to sound like THAT fan, but they seemed to have really changed over the years, and not in a good way. They lost that sound to me. That 311 sound.

Im a little older, but I liked 311 at one time in the late 90's. Big fan of "311", "grassroots", and "Transistor". Honestly I havent heard any of their new stuff.

They're not terrible, but I really don't like them. I doubt many VN posters would like the music I listen to though.

311 was great up until "Don't tread on me". Music, Grassroots, and 311 will blow your mind.

Agreed. Transistor and Sounds System were good, then came From Chaos and Evolver...meh. I never even game "Don't Tread on Me" a chance.

What about that cover of "D'yer Maker?" I'm not a big fan of covers, let alone Zeppelin.

Same. If you haven't heard it, you should illegally download "Enlarged to Show Detail 2". It was a bonus cd with one of the dvds they released, but it has some good jams on it.

From Chaos and Evolver are both decent albums, but as with 95% of bands, nothing touches the early stuff.

I've been a fan since 1995. I actually got their Blue album a few months before they hit big with "Down".

I actually like some of their newer stuff. I have all their CDs. They are one of those bands that I actually pretty much like all their songs, or at the least I don't hate them. To me Soundsystem was their last really great album. From Chaos isn't bad but it felt like a step back. Evolver has some good songs but was a further step down, as was Don't Tread On Me. Uplifter I actually thought was a step back up, and they went back down with Universal Pulse.

I can't believe it's been 16 years now since Down hit it big though.

Exactly! It's a very rare artist that gets better with time. I actually used to own the ETSD & ETSD 2 on VHS ('member those?) and I have the CD's. "Let the Cards Fall" is a great song. It has that perfect balance of mellowness and intensity.

That's funny. I was 8 when that came out! Imma youngin. Evolver has "Crack the Code" which I like, but I could live without the rest. I agree that Soundsystem was the last best album. They really went mainstream when they had "Amber" and "Champagne" (not that there's anything wrong with that) but then it just got really pop-y.

I always liked Champagne, but Amber was played out rather quickly.

My buddy had the first VHS they released and then I bought the second(I've still got the ETSD2 cd somewhere in my car. I saw them one time, '97 at the Worlds Fair Grounds in Knoxville. I'd still go to 311 day just to hear them playthe old stuff though.

311 = KKK, right?

They were one of my favorite bands in middle school. Second or third concert I ever went to, too.

The last show I went to they played "Summer of Love" which is from Unity (1990). I think that was 2004-ish. I haven't been in so long. They still play the older stuff and it sounds great live.

311 is one of those bands you dig when you are young and just getting into music, then as you get older you and exposed to "real" stuff, you stop following.

I really dug Grassroots.

True. I think that is what happened. They are like the gateway band for everything else. :)

Are you a big Syd Barrett fan?

I've seen them in concert somewhere around 30 times from 2002-now.

Music, Grassroots, and Transistor are amazing albums. Newer stuff is still good, but doesn't compare to the first 4 albums.

Most fun band to see live. Always a party.

I know that's right. 30 times is impressive. If they didn't play out at Lakewood (rough area) I would make more shows.
