I saw 311 at some dive in 5 Points in Columbia, SC around 1996. Probably one of the top 5 shows I've been to in my life.

I didn't buy their albums or music, though.

Yeah, the Tabernacle in ATL was my first show and it is this old church that was converted into a concert hall. It is pretty small and I was on the standing floor. My mom dropped me and my friend off while she hung out in the lobby (thanks, mom). My clothes wreaked the next morning :p I had such a great time. They had like a small mosh going in the middle and some surfers, but it was just a good time overall.

I fell in love with 311 in 1996 (as the blue album really took off). I've loved them ever since but like most of their fans, I'm not big on anything new past Don't Tread on Me

Favorite albums? From Chaos, S/T, grassroots, soundsystem, and music. Also love the live album.

Any good shows you attended? I've seen them at least 10 times. My favorites were in Atlanta for the Chinese new year, probably in 1999ish, and in Nashville when they played at 328 performance hall in 2000. I've gotten to meet them a few times and also did a phone interview with Tim Mahoney that lasted like 15 minutes. It was so cool. Never made it to 311 day unfortunately, I'd probably die from rocking out too hard over the 5-8 hour span. They play a helluva show, and I'll continue to see them as I get a chance, cause they still play mostly older tunes at the shows.

What is your opinion of some of their new stuff? Don't like it really.

I always liked Champagne, but Amber was played out rather quickly.

My buddy had the first VHS they released and then I bought the second(I've still got the ETSD2 cd somewhere in my car. I saw them one time, '97 at the Worlds Fair Grounds in Knoxville. I'd still go to 311 day just to hear them playthe old stuff though.

I have the ETSD VHS! I also have a live bootleg of a concert they did in 1994 on VHS.

311 will always hold a dear place in my heart, although my tastes have changed greatly. They introduced me to more experimental music, much like what some of you guys are saying. I basically learned guitar by playing with their cds. Ego and I have had some good 311 memories (1997 at World's Fair, going to the mall to get new albums) and they'll always be special to me. Not big on the new stuff, but it happens. My favorite album is Soundsystem followed very closely by Music.

I think they have progressed in a realistic way. If they kept making albums that sounded like Music it would get stale quickly and wouldn't really make sense at their age, imo. Most of the band is now in their 40's and Nick, SA, and Pnut have kids. Their career probably would have all but ended if they went in that direction, album sales would have been much lower than releasing singles like Amber, etc....but the hardcore fans would eat it up.

DTOM has some good songs on it but even Nick has said they rushed it to release and should have worked harder getting the songs exactly like they wanted them. Uplifter has some really good songs on it (Golden Sunlight, Sun Come Through was a bonus track and is amazing) and the production quality is top notch. Universal Pulse is probably my favorite since From Chaos, its just SO short...and the production isn't as good because it's an independent release.

Nice detail. I can't believe Nick has kids! Last time I checked he wasn't even married. That just shows you how long its been since I kept up with them (personally, anyways). 311, to me, is almost cultish. They have a specific following, IMO. Most people would like their popular hits like "Amber" but not everybody likes or knows about their whole collection. I did recently listen to "Sunset in July" and liked it. They are just an overall feel good band. Like Sublime, I just always feel better after I hear it. Very positive. I think they are one of the few rock bands that try to make that a defining characteristic of their music.

Started listening to them when "down" came out on the radio, and liked it (I no longer like that song). My sister had that CD, and I listened to it, and the song that got me hooked was "sound boy". I've owned every CD, up to Evolver exactly like you. Every show I've been to was in Nashville though. They have been one of my favorite bands for almost 15 years or so.

My Favorite songs are Gap, Tribute, today my love, summer of love, who's got the herb, & 8:16.
Fav CD's..... Music, & Grass roots.

Love live in Omaha 1991, which can be found on YouTube

Today My Love, Summer of Love, and 8:16 am are my favorites as well. Music and Grassroots are the best. 8:16 is sweet love-making music.

Excellent band. They came through Knoxville before they were well known back in the early 90s. Saw 'em at The Library with maybe 25 people in the whole of the place. They definitely had to lie about P-Nut's age to even get him in to play. :)

I think I read something similar in the FF. Maybe it was you. Isnt the Library closed now? I always thought that was an awesome name for a bar. I am going to try to go this July since they are coming to Atl. My sis and I have July birthdays and this will be her 18th present. Should be interesting for her. Her most intense concert has been Kings of Leon.

They're similar from a broad perspective. I'm still a huge fan of the first half of their albums, but it's not a big deal to say that Sublime was far better.

I dunno if it is still open or not.

I am sure your sister will enjoy the concert.

My goal is to try and see a 311-day concert one year.

I think 311 has more rock reggae and Sublime was good at ska dub hiphop. If I had to pick it would be Sublime but I agree they are both great within their genre. Robin the hood and 40 oz are my favorites.

311 is so old school for me. Their self-titled album and Transistor came out when I was in elementary school. I bought both albums, back when you actually bought your music. I haven't listens to any albums since then. Although I am a fan of those two albums.

Btw...the Tabernacle is my favorite place to see a concert. Incredible atmosphere.

IMO Sublime was at their best with their full-on punk.

Tabernacle was great. It had so much energy working in such a small place. I had never been so excited to see a performance than the first time I saw them there. Blue album was my first and opened it up for everything else. You should get back into it.

No, you're right. And I was going to add that 311 had more of a funk sound. Sublime was able to make everything mix which is why they were so great. There was ska, dub, hip hop, reggae, punk, and surf. They are one of the few bands that can pull of covers too. "Scarlet Begonias," "Legalize It," "Steppin Razor," "Summertime," and the reference to the Specials in "DJ's." Brad was also good at incorporating Spanish into the music as well.

Seeing the comments on here about their later albums definitely don't make me want to rush back to them. They seem like they are way past their prime.

I have a hard enough time keeping up with music overseas the way it is.

Understand. I would only listen to their first two or three albums. They have gotten past their prime for the most part. I don't really listen to any modern music so I usually do re-runs.

If you don't mind me asking, are you in the army or...?
