Understand. I would only listen to their first two or three albums. They have gotten past their prime for the most part. I don't really listen to any modern music so I usually do re-runs.

That's a shame. Don't let the overwhelming amount of s*** currently playing on the airwaves detract you from modern music. There are still good bands and artists out there (normally not mainstream though).

If you don't mind me asking, are you in the army or...?

I don't mind you asking. I am not in the army...yet. I am hopefully going to do medical school via the armed forces. My goal is to be a physician or researcher in the Air Force.

I graduated from UT in May of 2011. I was burnt out from school (majored in BCMB and double minored in Philosophy and Political Science). I wanted to take a year off and do something different. My best friend is Vietnamese. He was scared to death of entering the real world (UGA Grad, go figure) and always wanted to travel the world. We decided to travel to Southeast Asia and spend a year traveling and teaching English to support ourselves. It has been the best experience of my life. It is also about the only time in my life that I could do such a thing (come home, go to school for another 4-5 years, then hopefully have family after that, no time to travel the world). I have roughly three weeks until I come home (Atlanta).

Wow, man, that's awesome. Congrats on graduating. I had briefly considered doing the teaching abroad thing in English, and it was going to be in Japan, but I didn't have enough money saved up to just get up and go. Something I might do one day though. I also considered going into a branch of military services but it's sort of my last resort because I don't know if I could handle it. But you should take advantage if that's what you want. You can go really far I've heard.

So you are you from Atl? Woodstock is where I grew up first three years and now I'm near Kennesaw/Powder Springs.

If you get a chance to go, don't think about it, just go. It is an incredible experience. You will actually make pretty good money teaching in Japan, Korea, and China. I have friends teaching English in Korea and China at the moment. They make pretty good money compared to me (or what I use to make, I do charity work now).

I am from Lawrenceville (Gwinnett County). Graduated from Collins Hill in '06. I am pretty familiar with Kennesaw. I had never been to Woodstock until my ex took me there to meet her aunt. Pretty country compared to Lawrenceville and Kennesaw. However, the older I get the more I like rural places. The corn maze and pumpkin farm were fun.

I tend to like 311's newer content. Yet, I have a preference for their early content. Like anyone else, they are aging and experiencing life in their own accord which ultimately will influence their music.

Yeah, I'm going to get to Japan one way or another. Been dying to go forever. Maybe if I go the academic advisor route and get my masters in English then I will consider it. I just don't make too much right now. Thanks for the encouragement though.

I'm the same about the country. I really just want to get away from here and live in the middle of nowhere! :)

Agreed. The fact that they still carry such a large fan base shows how much dedication is shared between the fans and the band. They have to appeal to old fans and new, plus, like you said, they will evolve in their sound because its only natural.

I would not think that appealing directly to a fan base would be their main goal when creating new content. That would become stale very quickly as 311 has a sound that does not bode well to over-production. They are not a polished band, but that's wherein lies their sound, imo. They do have a rough edge which bodes very well to their live concerts.

The majority of folks will only hear them in a produced, recorded piece of content and never really get to see/hear them live which is a totally different animal. Their guitars and bass have a much heavier presence live and totally changes their sound to what they obviously intend. It just doesn't translate to material production.

i like their early stuff just as much as their latest stuff - which is not a whole lot.

I think Sublime is in an entirely different ballgame

That's a good point. I think that is why I only got to Evolver because the sound started to change after that where the songs sounded more polished, at least to me. It sounded so clean like it lacked that edge you talk about. Seeing them live is different and better. They are one of the few bands, start to finish, that bring a good show for me. It also has a lot to do with the type of people that come to the shows because it is a very positive and fun environment.

good, you?

this thread has me listening to some Sublime while I'm at work.

They're one of my favorites.

What are your thoughts on Sublime with Rome?

I'm well, thank you for asking. I have listened to Sublime at work. My favorite I keep going back to over and over is "Slow Ride." I have not gotten into Sublime with Rome though I have heard of it. I'm weird about listening to bands that take original members and make new bands when the lead bows out. The only exception is New Order from Joy Division.
