Not the streakiest right now, but the 5 hitters you'd most want on your team for the rest of the season and next, let's say.

(In no order)
Pujols
A-Rod
Manny
David Ortiz
Bonds

Other candidates?
Vlad?
Ryan Howard?

Have you looked at Magglio Ordonez's numbers?

He def. should be considered. If you're a GM, would you rather have him than any of the others on that list?
Yes. Manny is slowly, but unmistakably declining. I'm also not as enthralled with Ortiz as the rest of the world seems to be. Justin Morneau is as good as either of those guys.

Miguel Cabrera is a better hitter than Bonds , Ortiz or Manny. I am a big fan of Prince Fielder too.

If I were starting a team from scratch today, the first hitter I'd probably take is Miguel Cabrera of the Marlins. Not only does he play a skill position, but he's only 24 years old -- probably still three or four years away from his prime.

Edit: VKB beat me to it.

He will also weigh 280 pounds by Opening Day next year.

Manny is still one helluva hitter. Makes Ortiz viable with his protection, which Manny does not receive in return.

I'd take Morneau over Ortiz, but not Manny.

Totally forgot about Cabrera. I'm surprised the Yanks didn't gobble him up after they didn't get Vlad a few years back.

Justin Morneau might be hot right now, but I still take Manny and Ortiz over him. Those two guys are lethal next to each other. Cabrera or Vlad could replace Bonds on my list, although Bonds is still getting it done with a .500 OBP this year.

Seems the only two nobody's questioned so far are ARod and Pujols (the most dangerous hitter in the league, IMO). Wonder if we'd be saying the same thing this time last year about ARod.

3rd, Skill position? C, SS, 2B, CF are your skill positions. All the others, one must be able to lay the wood to play. 3rd base is not a "skilled" position, by no means.

Swap out A-Rod and Jeter in pressure/playoff games though.I'd add Chipper Jones myself to the list.

right now you've got too many power hitters on your team. I know that sounds weird, but you've gotta get that mix. ask the yankees right now. For the current list, I take out Bonds. Five years ago I would not have said that. but you asked for this year and next. A-Rod is a great all around player, Pujols has great power amongst other skills. Also, I'm not certain right now I wouldn't include Fielder over Manny.

i'm also a huge Maggs fan. He's hovered around or above .300 the past six years or so. that's an incredible feat. it's amazing how these new little league parks have brainwashed so many minds so that we're only concerned with the long ball

Well, I didn't mean to give that impression. Tony Gwynn is my favorite hitter of all-time, and I never was a power hitter at all when I played ball - I love guys who get on base and rarely strike out.

I just flat forgot about Ichiro (call it east coast bias). I also don't think the other guys on the list are just power hitters. I think they're all great hitters, period.

Getting it down to 5 is really tough.

After looking a bit more at it, I think Manny is tapering off somewhat compared to the others. Ichiro definitely should be on there, as should Pujols. I still think I want A-Rod (sick stats) and Ortiz (I just love the way he hits). I don't think I'm giving Maggs enough props either, looking at his stats. He should be on there.

So, you have 2 lefties and 3 righties.

I think Jeter, Vlad, Cabrera, Bonds, and Ryan Howard are right there too.

i didn't mean to imply you with the brainwashing. I just feel bonds is starting to seriously slide off the map. he was red hot for awhile this season, but his average is about to slip below .300 and he's old. really old. ortiz just scares people and i would want that in my lineup. Vlad is too inconsistent, yet he's my favorite player to watch play. I haven't gotten to see much baseball this year, but haven't i heard repeatedly that howard is seriously struggling?

There are a whole bunch of players who wish they were "sliding" so badly that they were reaching base about 50% of the time they go to the plate.
