Their music is good, to me even great, and I don't like Metallica at all. I'm 20 fwiw.
HOWEVER, no they aren't the Metallica of the modern era. Whether it's the fact their music isn't as good to most of society, or the fact that rock/metal doesn't have the following it used to, it's something. 20 years from now you won't see 5FDP shirts in stores like Kohls and you do with metallica's now. Metallica were kings of an era, no rock band will be musical kings of this era as sad as that is. A7X were probably as close as it gets and they are miles away.
Side note: 5FDP is great live for those into modern rock/metal music.

Who said anything about radio? I'm talking about dominating the industry. Net sales of albums, iTunes sales, etc. I bet not one single rock/metal/etc band is on the top 15 of album sales this year at the end of the year (but that is me making a number up).Maybe it's because the industry now collectively offers more and the radio doesn't choose what people listen to anymore. Harder for one band to dominate "the airwaves" if no one listens to the airwaves. Not sad at all.
