The last, closest "kings" as you described, were Linkin Park. You look at what they did in the 2000's and its not even close. And that was before they had arguably the greatest collaboration album of the decade as well.
Eh not really. I like some of the rock with rap in it (Linkin Park has a rapper, I feel like listening to one song should probably tell you that but some may not know that) never really made it to the heights it could have. Obviously the dude from Linkin Park or Fort Minor as some know him isn't a 2 Chainz type of rapper, but multiple good bands use this style of rock/metal with a rap element in there. Linkin Park, Evanescence, Emmure, etc. It really started back from thee Cypress Hill and Beastie Boys days, but anyway long story short they couldn't tune Metallica's guitars and set up their drums in terms of fame, but then again no band in recent memory can. I said A7X came closest, but that was really spitting a band out. None really do at all. Nightmare was HUGE for a while, and then the first two albums they did had a few big tracks like Beast and the Harlot, Afterlife, and Bat Country but they also, like 5FDP, will not have shirts in general clothing stores in 20 years. Really the Red Hot Chili Peppers may have been the closest to that fame, but they are two completely different types of bands, but I guess both leniently fall into the broad "rock" category. :loco:

Who said anything about radio? I'm talking about dominating the industry. Net sales of albums, iTunes sales, etc. I bet not one single rock/metal/etc band is on the top 15 of album sales this year at the end of the year (but that is me making a number up).

It is definitely sad. My name on here indicates I like rap, I just really enjoy my rock/metal too. Tons of good bands out there it's just a hurting genre. I live in the Atlanta area and there is one rock station in all of GA that I know of and it plays awful alternative rock. There are probably 5ish really popular pop stations and 3 or so for rap and country each. There isn't a single station here that will play new 5FDP music, new Shinedown music, new A7X music, etc. Not one. That to me is sad even though I don't listen to radio anyways
Exactly. I used to listen to project 96.1 every day, then it got replaced by yet another pop station. It made me sick.

My man! I loved that station. Decent at least music selection, great personalities, and they put some decent concerts together. Kid Chris was awesome

Maybe satellite radio is worth a try some day. Pandora and iTunes Radio are cool too

That's just about the only way to hear anything other than country or pop.

I said something about the radio. How do you think people dominated the industry when Metallica did? We were pretty reliant on the radio and the bands that got radio play dominated. Now we're not dependent on the radio. I can listen to the band of my choice any time I want because of the internet. I used to listen to a lot of bands on the radio, because that is what I was exposed to. Most of what I currently listen to doesn't get radio play. Now do you see how the fall of radio could make it hard for one band to dominate the industry?

Linkin Park and Metallica are not in the same league.

I think we're misunderstanding a bit here. As far as influence on future artists or actual artistic talent, maybe they aren't metallica (though the rock/rap style I feel was a RHCP thing that limp bizkit tried, korn did well, and Linkin Park did much better), but the point I was making is, sales wise and top records wise, they are. We can say we don't like them or that they are bad, but it doesn't change that they were the best selling rock group (and one of the three best selling "bands") of the 2000's. Sales don't mean everything obviously, but if we are talking about dominance and listeners, they are the best the 2000's and modern day has to offer.

This is why they're awesome. And check out the video.

How did Rage Against the Machine miss this list?
