6-6 in 2014 is what we should expect (positive thread)

In 2014, Tennessee fans should expect nothing more than 6-6, which would be a good year in my opinion. Yes, it will be Butch's second year as coach, but (and yes I will use this argument) the situation he was brought into was in no way similar to that of Nick Saban's or many other coaches.

Unfortunately Tennessee has another tough schedule next year and getting to a bowl game will be remarkable. It is important I think, to set our standards low next year, so that anything above them will be a pleasant surprise.

Analyzing the schedule, it looks as if UT will have very few if any give me games. Utah State is a good football team with a good QB, it will be a difficult challenge starting off the season with them.

At Oklahoma is going to be a killer, followed by playing Georgia and Florida back to back, who will both hopefully be down.

I think the roughest part of the schedule will be Ole Miss, Alabama, and South Caroilna, which it seems we always get dealt a rough hand during that stretch of the year. Ole Miss will be improved, Alabama will more than likely be Alabama unless Saban leaves and whoever takes his place tanks the program, and South Carolina will be tough, even without Spurrier and Shaw.

It will be weird playing Kentucky so early, I don't think I like that at all. But that game shouldn't be a challenge. Luckily Tennessee has a nice and probably well deserved bye week before Mizzou, and that probably will help a lot but not enough, as I see Mizzou being good next year. Then we finish off the season at Vandy, and unless James Franklin leaves, that's going to be a tough game to win, I really hate to say that but it's true.

So 6-6 is what I have, this is in no way a negavol thread, I fully believe in what Butch Jones is doing and I understand the magnitude of the situation that UT is in right now and that it is going to take a couple of years to get out of it. Once again, this is my opinion, I would like to see UT win more and definitely not any less. A bowl berth is what we should expect and hope for as fans next year, that would be a huge improvement.

We've got the number 2 recruiting class in the country, an experienced QB coming back, along with most starters at the other skill positions. There are at least 7 wins in there. Missouri won't have another miracle season next year and Georgia loses Aaron Murray, I think we win one or both of those games.

Or.....just observe and critique the season as it actually happens.

So many overshot the expectations for 2013 and now they are pissed because CBJ did not deliver on their unrealistic expectations.

If your only expectation is to win 4 games, then you must be partial to Dooley. Remember, CBJ IS GETTING PAID 3.3 MILLION DOLLARS TO WIN!!!!!!!

6-6 is not acceptable. Butch only gets 3 years to have us contenders in the SEC East or he will be gone. 7 to 8 wins is minimum next year. That's just the way it is. Is it fair maybe not but 3 years is enough time to see a big change. Year 2 should see a dramatic improvement.

Hopefully he'll at least put together several top notch recruiting classes so if he doesn't pan out the job will be attractive and table set for the next guy.

Neither the team nor the staff have yet proven they can get it done. There were some minor improvements this year, but not the kind of improvements some of the coaches we'll face next were able to implement from one year to another. Therefore, I'd be surprised if we go 6-6 next year; agree w/ others that it will be more like 5-7. I say this because I didn't see a system built around what we had (grated, it wasn't much). I saw a staff push their system onto existing personnel and it just didn't work as well as everyone had hoped that it would.

Hate that it has come to this, but I now have very limited expectations for this program. I'm not pulling my money or support; I have just come to terms that I get to live through one of the worst periods of UT Football history. Sad, but simple.

I hope the recruiting pays off big dividends. Great players can overshadow lackluster scheming until the program regains some momentum.

You missed what I am saying...there are people who act like Georgia will be amazing next year with a new QB under center. I thought Worley did an admirable job this year. This offense just does not fit him in my humble opinion. This offense is more for people like Peterson or Fergy (has the wheels to make plays etc), and not for pocket passers like Dobbs and Worley. I hope Worley and Dobbs prove me wrong and they can compete in this offense.

on what planet is Dobbs a pocket passer? And who is Peterson?

I called for 6-6 this season and that was before Mizzuo and the Barn turned out to be 2 of the top teams in the conference. So for me 5-7 isn't disappointing at all although I had hoped for a win against Vandy and to lose the way we did hurt really, really bad.

Next year on the other hand is a crap shoot and I have no intentions on trying to predict our record until at least half way into the season. On one hand we could be playing a massive amount of freshmen who could either come in and click right away or could be overwhelmed by the magnitude of competing in the SEC. On the other hand the coaches could pull a repeat of this year and try and redshirt as many of the freshmen as possible and we will continue to play with a bunch of players that clearly aren't cut out for the SEC.

6-6 is a reasonable goal. Don't count on Florida being down long though. If they bounce back, we may need more than one road win to get to 6-6.

You're going to be disappointed

And it's not "just the way it is." That's why we're in this situation to begin with. Fans like you are just part of the problem

I really only see 4 gimme games next year... what a ridiculously difficult schedule! Whoever made that should have their head examined... and to think a team like Ohio State would probably hover around .500 if we switched with them

So much is going to depend on highschoolers coming in and praying they are ready to contribute in the Junior NFL which is the SEC. We have a ton of EE which will help a lot. But expected 18 year old kids to step into the SEC and win right away is laughable in most cases. You could look at almost every position on the field right now and see we're towards the bottom of the conference at that position.

This program wasn't ruined in just a short period of time, it devolved into mediocrity with neglect. Mediocrity turned into a bottom feeding dumpster fire of a program by a couple of incompetent hires. These mistakes will not be fixed in a short period of time.

So we shouldn't expect to be any better with coach Jones than we was with Dooley?
Should we expect Jones to be able to fix several years of incompetence in a single year? I would say no.

Use your brain. Look at the walkons, the freshmen we have getting significant playing time right now. That isn't the sign of a healthy program. Help is on the way but let's be realistic, this team is bad and will take time to rebuild.

Anyone that expects 7 or more wins is delusional. 6 wins sounds good to me.

Look at the schedule next year. Mix another tough schedule with even more youth and inexperience than this year and uncertainty at QB, it will be a struggle to win 6 games next year.

Keep penciling in Vandy as a win. That's really been working out lately. The Vols should never I repeat never put Florida down as a win!

Let me just say this: The difference between 4-7 and 6-5 right now is 7 points. 7 points between having a win over two ranked teams, a bowl lock, and going into Ky looking for win number 7. Too many fans are basing their opinion of this season on performances against Bama, Auburn and Mizzou (the leagues three best teams who make almost every team look bad) after our top 3 QBs were sidelined due to injuries. Sure we are 3 points from only having 3 wins now too, but that is the point. The margins, as Butch said, are razor thin.

Wow, Vandy beats us in our 2 worst seasons since the 1920's and their fans ( all 50 of them) all of a sudden think they "own" us. Please Vandy fans, go back to the record books and see that your all-time winning percentage vs. the Vols is still less than 25%. You haven't even won 30 games against UT in over 100 years of football. Don't get too carried away. You're still meaningless as far as I am concerned and once Franklin bolts for a " real" football job, you're short lived success comes to an end..
