8 Team Playoffs

6 teams. first two get byes
Sounds good on paper but that's a lonnnnngggg time off for two teams. The teams that didn't have a bye might come into the next game a little sharper than the ones with the bye.

Problem I have with only six teams is they're still going to find ways to omit a team like UCF. I know it's a small school but you should get in over a team that has losses and struggled to beat Vanderbilt.

I like it the way it is, every game during the season is a playoff game. Only criteria I would change is you have to win your conference to get in, this makes conference championships a first round playoff game.
Not a bad idea in theory. The problem is one conference champion gets left out every year and you won't get the best 4 teams most of the time. Then you have teams like Notre Dame that are independent. Limiting the field to conference champions creates a host of new problems unless you expand the playoff first.

Let’s stsrt with 6. The two top teams with best records get first round byes. The other 4 play in the two predetermined bowl games on NYD and those winners play the two top teams in the second round and those winners play for the NC. 8 teams might be a stretch at this point but expect it to expand to at least 6 within the next 4-5 years....
6 teams gives an unfair advantage to the 2 teams not having to play an extra game. Having 8 instead of 6 doesn't add any extra weeks and it forces all 8 teams to play for a spot in the final 4. Not even the NFL hands a spot in the final 4 to teams. You want to make the semi finals you have to earn it. That is one reason the 4 team system is so bad. Teams are selected to be in the semi finals. It isn't a true playoff just as 6 teams wouldn't be a true playoff.

IMHO, the big 5 automatic qualifier conference champions plus the highest ranked independent. Creating a 6 team playoff with minimal complaints from those that don't get in.

Seeing how UT has about a 0% chance to ever beat Bama twice in a season and make the current playoffs, I'm all for this. Get us in as a 1-loss or possibly 2-loss team. I'll take our chances there.

Time to stop caring about CFB and do what's best for UT in the next decade or 2. 8 teams it is!

My long-term vision is 4 superconferences, 8 divisions. Play out division, conference, and national championships as 1 big 16-team tourney, rather than 10 teams playing for 5 conference champs, then voting on 4 to go on. Essentially the same size field here, but NO subjective voting. No need for a debate ever, ever again. All teams must join a conference. No more rewarding Notre Dame or punishing a team like Georgia unfairly. G5s gets their own champion, as they should.

To make up for extra games, cut regular season back to 11 games like it used to be. Have to be 6-5 to make a bowl, no more .500 teams. Cut out 1 garbage, useless game a year no one cares about anyway.

If Tennessee was 7th and there were only 6 teams, then would we cry? I don’t know, but I would sure be upset.

Why not?? You got evidence to support your cause?? If it ever went to 16 teams (doubtful at this point) there would be 9-3 or 8-4 teams playing in the playoffs....almost guaranteed to happen...

I know and understand that. That's why I would like to keep it at 4. The more it expands, the more mediocre teams get in.

I think either I'm not understanding your reponse or you didn't understand my initial comment.

8 teams. All Power 5 conference winners are in. Top non power 5 team in and 2 wildcards. Bowl system still exists for everyone else.

This in theory gives every team a shot...

We would (myself included). Then when it expands to 8, teams 9 and 10 will complain. Go to 16, 17 and 18 will.

I just don't want the regular season to lose its value. I think 4 is the perfect number. Are there years when 5 teams deserve a shot? Sure. Are there years where only 2 do? Yep. But the more we expand this thing, the less meaningful regular season losses become.

IMO, that is what makes CFB the best sport on the planet. Every. Game. Matters. The more losses you can absorb and still make the playoffs, you lose a piece of that. I don't want this to become NFL Jr.

no at large teams. If you're not good enough to step up and win your conference then screw you. You aint first then you're last. Otherwise just give everyone participation trophy and have a group hug

How I'd do it?

P5 conference champions get an automatic bid. The highest ranked G5 team in the final CFP poll gets an automatic bid. Two additional teams that are the next ranked get "at large" bids which accounts for the Independents in the league. No bye games in the qualifying rounds. Three rounds of play.

This year it would have been:

Alabama (SEC)
Clemson (ACC)
Ohio State (Big 10)
Oklahoma (Big 12)
Washington (PAC 12)
UCF (G5)
Notre Dame (At large)
Georgia (At large)

Final CFP rankings:

Alabama - 1
Clemson - 2
Notre Dame - 3
Oklahoma - 4
Georgia - 5
Ohio State - 6
UCF - 7
Washington - 9

Odd team out would have been Michigan (#8) this year.

Final rankings determine who plays who. Lowest ranking in that group was Washington at #9 in the final poll. Which they would play Alabama (#1) in the first round. Clemson (#2) plays UCF (#7). So on and so forth.

That is crazy if you are a SEC fan. The SEC has proved it's dominance the last 20 years or more and deserve two teams in the CFP. Really, UGA would have been the better team to get the 4th spot. OU will not play Bama tough like UGA did. It needs to go to 6/8 best teams by rankings and strength of schedule, period. Personally, I would like to see 8. Otherwise, you will may never know (even with 6 team playoff) what a team like UCF or Boise St could do. Boise St has proved several times that a Mountain West team can beat the Power 5 by winning bowl games vs Washington, Oregon, Utah #19, Arizona #11, Oklahoma #10, and TCU #3.

Added, In an 8 team playoff, ND would have to be in top 5 in average rankings to make the list of 8 due to their SOS, no conference affiliation, and no championship game.
