Fumble the ball on the 1 and its your ball.

Fumble the ball and it hits the pylon...

It makes no logical sense.

Sure it does. Otherwise runners would just underhand toss the ball to the pylon if it meant they got to keep possession on the 1 inch line.

the end zone is different from the regular playing field. it has different rules for everything. catching the ball there, getting sacked there, intercepting the ball there, FUMBLING the ball there.

That's a bs rule and everyone knows it. Pig fumbled on the one. The direction the ball travels after that shouldn't determine a game.

We were unlucky in that he lost the ball just before the pylon and so the ball hit it. Had he lost the ball a half second earlier, or held it a quarter of a second longer, it's either out of bounds on the half yard line or a TD, but so it goes for us.

Rule: a runner cannot advance a fumble

There. I took care of a back purposely fumbling forward to gain yardage.

Its a bad rule. If you fumble out of the end zone you should receive the ball exactly where it was lost

Agree bad rule..
Anywhere else on the field a forward fumble out if bounds is spotted at the site of the fumble, and if you purposely fumble forward it's a penalty

I love the fact that since this just happened to us, now suddenly everyone thinks it's a stupid rule.

Before that play hardly anyone gave it any thought.

That makes sense.

But why change possession as the penalty. Why not just push the offense back to the 10 yard line? That is a penalty. Giving the ball to the other team is an extraordinary measure.

I've always said it's a stupid rule. If you fumble the ball forward anywhere else on the field and the ball goes out of bounds, the offense gets the ball where you originally fumbled it. The defense isn't just given possesion. THat's stupid. The defense should have to recover the fumble to earn possession. Possession shouldn't just be given to them. I've always hated that rule, and it's screwed us over several times over the years.

It would be more fair if the ball came out to the 20 but possession did not change

I've been *****ing about this rule for years. I hate it. The defense should have to recover the ball to earn possession. It shouldn't just be given to them.

We should have the ball where we last had possession unless GA got it, which they didn't. Boo-yah!

If it was 4th down, that would be different, but it wasn't.

Why not just get the ball back where it was originally fumbled? That's exactly what would happen if you fumble forward anywhere else on the field and it goes out of bounds. But for some reason, you have to give the ball to the other team when it is fumbled through the end zone? It doesn't make sense.

I think Touchback rules should be different in OT play.

There are no kickoffs, it's RARE to have Touchbacks, but it can give the other team an upper hand.

I think it should have been more as penalty w/ loss of downs.

Thoughts?

As has already been pointed out see the UNC bowl game for stupid rules no one thought about.

Its still a bad rule.

I think there should be a rule that if Tennessee violates a rule at a crucial point trying for the first meaningful win in a long painful stretch, that the rule Tennessee violates is declared null and void at that instant Tennessee violates it - thus rendering the rule not applicable.

That would sure save some heartache. And yes, why does it always feel like we are on the receiving end of this...

(Because we are, I don't know what we did to piss off the football gods but I'll sacrifice whatever to make us even)
