A Bill Would Bring Back Lady Vols

In addition to the bill related to the nickname, Kane said he has prepared another bill that would require the university to hold a public hearing anytime a petition garnered at least 10,000 signatures
That's not easy to abuse or anything.

Could get interesting, what if a petition is started to end football? Or prayer before games? Im afraid all this has done is open up a can of worms.

I propose a petition to term limits on career politicians -- Would like to know how this bill can 'force' NIKE to change its contract with UT

And we actually pay these legislators?

Well, you know. These "representatives" are just responding to the MASSIVE groundswell of support that has gripped the State of TN and held it in suspense over the School's AD making it's own decisions about it's own decisions about a naming convention. N-O-T!!!

From the article - Kane said he hasn't heard from a single constituent or other supporter in favor of dropping the Lady Vols name. And he worried that the Lady Vols name could go away for women's basketball eventually as well. -- If that happens (with basketball) blame it on Warlicks coaching and wrecking the program in the process

There is already a bill in TN that prohibits denying prayer before a football game. I don't know if it affects anything above the highschool level though.

After all the university is funded by the tax payers of Tn. In essence we have the right to tell theem yes you can or no you can't

I agree with the Bill. In this era of political correctness why try to fix something that isn't broke? UT Lady VOLS I think give the women a greater sense of pride, and what's wrong with that?

Just what we don't need; the legislature to make more laws to mandate what institutes of higher learning name their athletic programs. Already too much control over everything we do every day. Politics as usual.

Well the school is doing everything on our dime, so we do in fact have that right, as well as the right to express our displeasure when they do other stupid things, and demand the dismissal of the offenders. They can refuse at the risk of being defunded for various things. Any time we can stop the spread of PC or leftist/Marxist encroachment it is a cause worth fighting for, if only to inflict defeat on them.

The problem is the BOT and the school is really accountable to no one the way system is set up. So, if you have a certain segment of the BOT or the administration who want to politicize an issue like the name the team calls itself then no one can do anything about it except ask our elected representatives to try to intervene and that's what he's doing. He's acquiescing to the will of his voters.

Amen to this also.

All that bill would require would be for the Board of Trustees to consider a topic of it had the signatures of 10,000 people, not actually do anything about it.

That was the biggest mistake the BOT made here, they refused to discuss this situation at all. If they had taken up the topic, even if their answer was just to say it's up to the AD to decide, then this is all a moot topic. By refusing to even discuss it, they just fueled the fire.

If something is important enough for 10,000 (or in this case 20,000) actual people, not online commenters, to sign a petition, then it's important enough for the BOT to at least include it as a topic for discussion. While they most certainly shouldn't be bound by the opinions of every person with a petition, they also shouldn't be able to ignore a topic that has generated this much interest.
