A Case for John Chavis

With all due respect for Cheif, Raheem Morris paired with Jonathan Gruden would recruit circles around Chavis. And Mr. Morris knows a thing or two about defensive schemes and development.

Name one successful program in the SEC over the last 10 years where the HC had the university "in his blood"?

Would love to have a TN flavor to the new coaching staff, but not any of the old guard coaches. Time to move on.

Maybe we will, maybe we won't but, regardless speculation does nothing. When a coach is hired we all might be happy he has "Tennessee" ties or we will all hope he learns well the tradition this place holds.

PS-sorry meant to quote Fury's(always been a comic collector so like the name) previous post about not a having UT blood.

Danke....like the TAR?

Anyway, I hope so, and if we really do get Gruden, I'll be stoked.....but I don't think he's a sure thing, even if we can get him, not everyon is cut out to be a college coach it's a different animal.... John Chavis is a known Quantity... and maybe he wouldn't want it, but I have zero doubt he'd make us much more competative then we have been the last two coaches.......and I really would prefer to see more coaches that are Alumni...

Ah the vaunted Fulmer curse. Incidently, the curse began when Fulmer himself began to slip into mediocrity. But we must now pay for our sins of reacting to that slide.

Fulmer's "mediocrity" was a winning season, we have to pull out video and snap shots of just to remember. He also had lined up some serious talant before he was let go...the man at least deserved to complete the season, no matter how you spin it letting a life long Vol mid season when he gave you a NC, was just classless.....as are any who supported it.

Glad to see Chavis name being tossed around. Not sure if he wants to be HC or not but he has alot of upside with little downside. Despite the stupid 3rd and Chavis crap I see on here, he was and is arguably the best defensive coach in recent history. Not many people can match stats or hardware with the Chief. If you disagree with that remark then research the best defenses for the past 15 years along with the number of defensive players drafted into the NFL by Chavis and then you tell me he isnt a bad*ss. Thats not opinion....ITS A FACT. He would unite the fanbase as well as anyone else mentioned. He has obvious ties to UT and SEC. He would be able to recruit as well as anyone, IMO, and better than most on defese.....which is what wins championships. He's not a big "splash" hire, but we may need to get back to our roots and lick our wounds for awhile. Don't know how he would do in the spotlight as HC personality wise, because I've never seen him in that light. But at this point, he seems as good or better than anyone else thats available and realistic. Would anyone really just hate to see John Chavis be our next HC?

To me the best name has hardly been mentioned. I am personally tired of the national search for the next would be or has been coach. I really want to restore TN pride in the way only an Alumni understands. No matter how some may feel towards Fulmer Era John was winning SEC awards till the end. Went to LSU and without dropping a beat built one of the most physical stingy defenses around. Chavis has the aggressive swagger from all his Defences he's proven in SEC and he knows all the opposition and their quirks and staff intimately. I don't care what he said in his soul he bleeds Orange. He also knows his limitations, he get a good offensive coordinator and let them roll, but he woul restore discipline and Tennessee tradition and wouldn't need a learning curve for Tennessee Volunteers smash mouth SEC ball. He needs to be considered.

I think Chavis is a proven DC, if he decided to make that jump to be a HC it would be Tennessee and he would bring a good coaching staff full of ex-Vols. I don't think that's going happen, but that would be cool if it did.
