Just a reminder that recruiting is less than a perfect science. These guys were all pretty much overlooked coming out of High School.

LB Clay Matthews-USC, walk-on
DT B.J. Raji- Boston College, 2 star
QB Aaron Rodgers- California, 3-star-community college transfer
WR Jordy Nelson-Kansas State, 2 star-only Division 1 offer and as a safety
RB James Starks-Buffalo, 2 star

It's amazing how people point out a handful of underrated recruits and think the exception is the rule. You play the percentages, it's really not that hard to understand.

exceptions NOT the rule

You want to let a few exceptions make you feel better about our recruiting.. do your thing.

if you really want to go this route, put a list of programs together that consistently recruits well in comparison to their competition, yet puts a poor product on the field.

My favorite argument is the:

"More 3 and 4 star recruits go in the first round each year than 5 star recruits"

OF COURSE MORE OF THESE GET DRAFTED! THERE'S ONLY 10-15 5 STAR RECRUITS EACH YEAR, COMPARED TO THE HUNDREDS OF 3 AND 4 STAR RECRUITS.

I don't watch NON 5 star recruits. I look around them to see the real stars of the field. :D

Well, Louisville, a team of primarily 2 and 3 stars just beat the brakes off Florida, a team of primarily 4 and 5 stars.

Just a thought.

U can have a team full of 5 stars and still suck. If the coaching staff doesn't get them to buy in to the team concept and can actually help those 5 stars perform at a level above their opponent whomever it maybe be they aren't going to be any better than a bunch of 2 stars. GBO!!!

Boise State beat Oklahoma in 07
Utah beat Bama in 09
Boise State beat UGA 11
Louisville beat Florida in 13

It's getting less rare.

The point I am trying to make is that gap between major and mid major is narrowing as I believe coaching plays a greater role.

Florida, LSU, Alabama and Georgia have been at the top of the conference. Are you trying to say the secret to beating them is recruiting worse players? Who would have thought it?

Coaching plays a huge role in getting the best out of your players whether they be two star or five star. I also believe that the talent between the different star rankings has shrunk to almost nothing. There are more three and four star players now who would have been ranked higher in the past but are ranked lower so the idea that there are only a select few five stars can remain.

You do know that Tennessee has more than 2 stars that are committed, right? I don't think this person said that it was the rule either. The op doesn't necessarily just pertain to Tennessee nor does it mean that it was supposed to justify our abundance of two star athletes (which totals 1). Now if the op does mean to justify us recruiting lower rates kids then shame in the op. I can't say anything that's derogatory towards you, but others can flip another poster off and that's alright.

The fact of the matter of our situation is that jones is going to have to out coach a number of opponents in order for us to win enough to get back to matching them in recruiting. His coaching is going to have to be superior for that to happen. IMO I like the chances of that happening when looking at the East. Luckily the strength of the coaching is in the west.

USC, Texas, Notre Dame until this year, Michigan until this year. Even Florida had a couple down years by their standards 2 out of the last three years while enjoying continued recruiting success. Big recruiting doesn't always guarantee a good season.

But, with that being said, I am on your side on this and I know and understand what you are getting at. Most of those time, all those teams I mentioned are usually competing for conference titles. A handful of seasons cant be used to determine the 5* vs 3* argument.

I am so tired of Vols "fans" ripping the new coaching staff and the players that are coming in. These guys are coming in with passion and are ready to give everything they have for Volnation but just because Coach Jones wasn't a big name hire or the recruits aren't all five stars we have no chance. Its no wonder that other fans look at us and shake their heads in disgust. I've been told by pretty much all my friends that Vol fans are some of the biggest fair weather fans in college sports. I've argued this point tooth and nail but the truth is there is a big portion of our fan base that fall directly into this category. I hope that the players and coaches know that we aren't all this way and that the majority of us are happy to welcome all of the into the Volunteer family.

Wrong! Recruiting is the life blood of any school. But coaches can not rely on the star system to evaluate good recruits. To prove this I have went back and looked at rivals 2002-2010 recruiting. I consider someone a success if they start at least one year and contribute two years without quitting or getting kicked off the team. Here are the results:

2 Star Players total 21 Success 8 39%

3 Star Players total 88 Success 35 41%

4 Star Players total 83 Success 41 49.5%

5 Star Players total 20 Success 6 30%

A lot of 5 stars did not pan out, quit, or was removed off the team by the coach.
