After they finished stretches and a few hitting drills, the Vols practiced live two-point conversions. The defense stopped the offense on three of four attempts. The first three attempts were all incomplete throws. Justin Worley threw the first. Nathan Peterman threw the second. On the third attempt, Worley threw the ball away after a high snap spoiled the play. Quarterback Joshua Dobbs handed off to running back Justus Pickett on a zone read play for the only successful conversion.

The most noticeable absences on Tuesday were two starters, center Mack Crowder and linebacker/defensive end Curt Maggitt. This counts as the fifth practice Maggit has missed. Crowder was held out Tuesday. With Crowder out, guard Kyler Kerbyson took reps at center and Jashon Robertson, recently moved from defensive to offensive line, filled in at guard. Another offensive line look worth mentioning: During some team work, Dontavius Blair took reps at left tackle while Jacob Gilliam took reps at right tackle. Coleman Thomas, the usual starter at right tackle, took reps with the second team.

Wearing green non-contact jerseys were linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin, running back Derrell Scott, Deanthonie Summerhill and receiver Drae Bowles.

14 looked good last night and had another strong showing today.
I just hope we have a sufficient QB to get all the WRs the ball.

Love your updates, so I am not complaining. But can you explain the above? If Worley is looking good, then why are you worried about him being sufficient?

amazing comeback from the dead by Worley. Peterman was just going to start over him yesterday due to Worley looking worse than last year.

Not sure Worley has been worse and he's been with the one's all camp. Peterman made a charge but sounds like it will be JW to start.

Peterman improvised after a low snap from freshman center Ray Raulerson and ran in for a score, and Helm redeemed himself with a tough touchdown catch with freshman safety Evan Berry draped all over him.

I like seeing that Peterman has better scrambling abilities - sadly, I think he may need it this year if he gets starts or gets reps in.

Because he has looked awful minus last night and today.

Why does he get all the first team reps? Does this coaching staff not think it matters what group you get your reps with? I've been calling BS on this being any kind of competition because the coaching staff has rigged it in favor of Worley the entire time.

"This is where as a mentally tough football team, this is where you have to fight through it," Jones said as the Vols finished their 12th practice of camp. "This is where you have to be disciplined in your habits and in your sleep. This is where you mature, this is where you grow up and this is where you find what's inside of you to fighting through the pans, the aches associated with training camp.

Jones has alluded to possibly naming a starting quarterback this week. During his media session on Tuesday, he briefly talked about Justin Worley, praising the senior signal caller.

"Going through your progressions, there is a clock in your head as a quarterback and also understanding situational football and areas on the field," said Jones. "That was great to see. I see Justin gaining confidence practice-in and practice-out."

Did I hear Butch right in his video press conference when he said they didn't have enough depth at WR? That's a joke, right?

do you guys realize qb's make bad throws even in..practice? I think Einstein said something about dreading the day when the use of technology would create generations of idiots. I probably butchered his quote and idiot is way to strong of a word but I think we have a generation of Madden NFL folk that go through practice drills and think qb's are error proof in practice. I'm kindof kidding and kindof serious.

Quick thought on the center. I felt last year the snap was not only slow to release but also slow in the air. That didn't help an already off beat offense based on timing. I hope we can get it back quickly to the qb so a slow to read Worley can get that extra and important split second to see the field instead of still looking at the ball floating his way.

Here's Butch's full transcript.

(On the process of training camp)
"It's starting to grind. This is where your mindset, this is where your mentality kicks in. For the first time, I could feel the training camp legs out there, could feel it, could see it. This is where as a mentally tough football team, this is where you have to fight through it. This is where you have to find the extra treatments, this is where you have to be disciplined in your habits and in your sleep. This is where you mature, this is where you grow up and this is where you find what's inside of you to fighting through the pans, the aches associated with training camp. A lot of them are fighting through it, some of them have to work on that. We kind of changed the schedule on the fly when we got out there because I could just kind of sense it, so I put our team in some competitive situations to kind of get them going right away."

(On feeding off his energy)
"Everything is about energy. It starts with me, it starts with our coaches, it starts with our leaders. You have to get excited, practice is like recess. It is controlled chaos. You get to have recess, you go around and what do you love to do? You get to go play ball at recess. You have to keep in perspective , you work so hard for the opportunity to play football, every opportunity to get better is critical. It's about energy and that mindset. And, again, we're teaching a lot of young players about the mental approach each and every day and not hitting that wall. The wall is an imaginary wall and you've got to fight through it each and every day."

(On Justin Worley checking down during team periods)
"Going through your progressions, there is a clock in your head as a quarterback and also understanding situational football and areas on the field. That was great to see. I see Justin gaining confidence practice-in and practice-out."

(On Jonathan Johnson and Ryan Jenkins)
"Their development is very important. We don't have a lot of depth at thereceiver position yet, we need to continue addressing that in the recruiting process. Ryan Jenkins, we pick our spots with his health. With Jonathan Johnson, the best compliment I can give him and you guys probably know what I'm going to say, is his consistency. He brings it every day. He's worked himself into being a good football player. We call him our two-star. Again, it's a great illustration that stars don't mean anything. He's got a drive to be great, He's got that inner drive, he works every day and doesn't say two words. He shows up to work every day and makes plays for us. He takes coaching. Coach Z [Azzanni] tells him one thing and that's it. You never have to repeat it and he never makes the same mistakes twice, so I've been very, very happy with Jonathan."

(On developing rhythm on offense)
"The rhythm is developing and it started to develop in the scrimmage and when we walked off the field and when I said we gained confidence, that is what I was eluding to, you can see some rhythm but it is not there consistently yet. Our centers have to take a major step moving forward. Our accuracy with our shotgun snaps and when you are in the shot gun the snap sets the temperament for the entire play, run game, play action game, drop back. All of a sudden it takes a snap six inches to the left or to the right or down and the quarterback takes his eyes of his progression. It screws the rhythm and timing of the throw game up. That is probably, right now, my biggest concern. The overall accuracy of the center position in terms of snapping."

(On rotating players on the offensive line)
"We are trying to get as many reps, we are very, very limited up front in the offensive line so if you notice each day we have a different lineup of a multitude of players playing different positions. Because when you don't have a lot of depth we are going to ask some individuals again to play a lot of positions. I keep talking about it, the one individual who continues to shine each and every day, doing an exceptional job, is Jashon Robertson. Again, the move over from defense to the offense has been big for us. He plays at pad level, he is very, very instinctive and he is very intelligent and he is tough. I know our defense wants him back as well but he is doing a great job for us on the offensive line as well."

Peterman made a nice ball fake, then hit freshman tight end Daniel Helm for a touchdown. Butch Jones was not pleased with the coverage, bellowing: “Touchdown! Elliot (Berry) didn’t know what to do!” (Actually, it appeared from the sideline that Evan Berry was the defender beaten on the play.)

A.J. Johnson hammered Pickett for a two-yard loss on a run up the middle, prompting Jones to shout, “Very good! It’s about time we say enough’s enough!”

A draw play to Pickett goes for a 9-yard touchdown up the gut. Tennessee’s pass rush appears to be leaving the middle of the field open.
