I know you're trying to help a buddy out and I'm reallllly not trying to be too negative... but wouldn't a part-time job provide enough funding over a couple of semesters to do a study abroad? That seems more realistic compared to asking people to give you money to go and play in a foreign country for a few weeks?

Plus, she's a journalism major and her GoFundMe description looks like this:

"i have been longing to study abroad after hearing my peers tell me about their amazing experience. i am a journalism major and i want to get a life changing experience in prague. college is very expensive but i do not want that to hinder my learning experience. my trip will be from may 9-30, 2014. in prague, czech republic, i will be able to explore the world of international journalism."

It doesn't instill confidence that she's learning.

If people actually donate, more power to her. I would never be able to ask people to fund something like that for me knowing that there are less fortunate people in life.

UT offers exchange programs to study abroad for a semester or calendar year. If you get accepted, you pay your normal tuition to UT and exchange places with another international student (more or less).

It's an affordable way to study abroad. She should look into that if she wants a true study abroad experience instead of a 3 week vacation in Prague this summer.

I would like to study the culture of South Beach for a couple of weeks. Anyone interested in helping me make these studies become a reality, donations to my PayPal account will be appreciated. Of course I will post photos after I complete my studies. Thank you in advance for you cooperation. :)

Not a scam... a simple Facebook search can show you that it (she) is in fact real (I thought the same thing and did some research). However, I think she's just being lazy and wants a free vacation paid for by other people. If she didn't spend the money on the tattoos and clothes she could probably afford the trip.

i do not believe people do not want others to get an education

She can take out a loan to study abroad like everyone else or continue being educated at UT. Dont believe a pilgrimage to Prague is a requirement to receive a degree or "get an education"

Maybe she'll get one of those emails from somebody in checkaslavakia that is trying to send funds to someone in the US of A after they won the lottery or sumthin.

My daughter is at UT and she wants to study abroad too. Let me know how this goes. Maybe we'll try the same thing. :)

I'm sure you mean well Taz, but there are numerous students who have to take out student loans and are working full or part-time to get an education. If others want to donate to this young lady's "cause" then so be it, but I have a hard time identifying this as a "need".
