A&M (not) hiring Mark Stoops

Stoops hasn’t done bad at UK. Here’s the thing about programs like that: you’re not supposed to. Sure, you may have the occasional 9-10 win season when everyone else is having a down year, but more often than not you’re looking at 7 wins. And if you can do that? It’s actually the sign of a pretty successful program.

Kentucky is meant to be a stepping stone job. Even though Stoops has stayed there a decade, most would take the first big job offered to them from there. Stoops is kind of like PJ Fleck at Minnesota. He’s had moderate success at a very middle-to-lower tier program, but his next job (at presumably a bigger program) will really tell the tale.

Stoops is an average coach. He is 73-64 at Kentucky. His SEC record is 35-55. He has never won more than 5 SEC games in a season. He has feasted on a very easy non conference schedule. The last two years he has won 3 SEC games each.
This sums up my thinking. I just don’t get the love for Stoops. I get that KY is a tough place to coach but so is USCe, Mizzou, MissState and all of these programs have had some level of success. KY really has nothing to brag about except an occasional quality win.

Plus Stoops just doesn’t strike me as the kind of coach to fit into an increasingly offensive oriented game.

They could hire Mizzou's OC away from them and knock Drinkwitz back down a peg or two.

We don't know if Stoops actually was the target or if he played his school for more $, but if I am an aggie, i will feel like I "settled" for the ugliest girl at the dance at 2am and she turned me down anyway. This would have been a poor hire for A&M. Their board is now saying the "Schiano'd" the leaked hire. LOL. I'll just bet you they won't be dragged thru the dirt for doing so like we were.

I know there’s been much speculation about me and my job situation the last couple of days. It’s true I was contacted about a potential opportunity this weekend, but after celebrating a big win against our rivals with players I love like family, I knew in my heart I couldn’t… Show more

Stoops acting like he decided to stay, maybe he did but there was terrible backlash at college station earlier tonight. I think it was a mutual decision to break it off. GBO

Why? Stoops has beat a Butch Jones & Jeremy Pruitt in years they were fired. That’s it.
Bc he has done really well at KY. We were a program the couldn't go to a bowl. He had ky where they go to a bowl every year. The fans want to fire him bc he doesn't do good enough and they go to a bowl every year. Ky fans have forgotten they are ky. That's how good of a job he's done.

I'd be surprised to see him leave that job. $9/yr to go 35-55 in the conference is a pretty sweet gig
