A sign of the times...

Because people can see what's happening with talent now coming in with Butch and he is a proven winner.
This is Martin's most talented, experienced and deep team he has ever had, we still come up short, and the class coming in isn't top 5 or close to it.
Proven winner vs proven mediocre. If you want to compare, there you go.

I get there's no comparing the 2 sports, simply pointing out the hypocrisy of people.

There were posters calling for CCM after year 1, after he overachieved expectations, and pulled a nice recruiting get in Stokes. Yet Butch underachieved in year 1, and he's somehow the second coming of Bear Bryant and is going to be the greatest coach in Tennessee history.

People want to get excited and I get that, but people just seem to jump the gun both ways.

By any rational analysis he didn't underachieve. I consider beating everybody you are supposed to plus winning one your not meeting expectations.

So if Martin makes the dance and they make the sweet 16, what's your stance? Honest question.

They should've beaten Vanderbilt, go back to preseason and look at what people were predicting.

It changes nothing with me but it will earn him another year or two.....I dont feel he is recruiting consistently enough to make the tourney. It doesnt matter how I feel though bc its his job to prove me wrong on the court....that's all that really matters.

I'm not questioning Butch.

Did you overachieve on the field last year? He either underachieved or at the most, met expectations.

He has recruited tremendously which gives hope, but that's only half of it, you still have to coach the guys.

All I'm saying is that I've seen a large number of people acting as if Butch is the next Bruce Pearl, and I'm saying he did nothing on the field last year to make me think that.

I gotcha. Personally I would say he met expectations. Going into the year I wanted to see bowl eligible and one win over one of the better SEC programs barring no crucial injuries. Without Dobbs being forced to start well before he was ready due to injuries we would have beaten Vandy and met that, so I had no problems.

Anyways, I'll quit with the football talk in the bball forum.

You may support football, but you definitely don't understand it if you're questioning CBJ after this year. Our roster was as bad as it's been in decades. For almost half the season we were starting our fourth string true freshman quarterback. There were walk ons in the two deep at multiple positions. Vandy, which seems to be your big sticking point, was easily a push talent-wise.

Next year will be much of the same (except we'll definitely have more talent than Vandy) because our whole team (especially the front lines) will be really really young. 2015 will be the first year that alarm bells will start to ring if we don't start seeing a big difference in wins and losses.

I actually agree with your position, but I do find the bolded part troublesome. Let's assume Vandy had equal talent (I don't think they did, but let's say they did). Isn't it worrisome that Butch lost with equal talent, at home, after a bye, with a bowl berth on the line?

Vandy finished in the top 25. We didn't have a QB actually for that game. People with orange colored glasses may have been predicting we would beat Vandy before the season started by no real football people thought that. didn't Marquez North miss most of that game too?

I know how you feel, I asked Sparty :)

That's why Vandy is my big "sticking point".

Were we not favored?

That's fair enough.

So you're more about, how the coaches look rather than wins and losses?

"If he coaches like be should and they play like they are capable, I back whomever it is."

Who in their right mind comes to your dumbass conclusion from my post above? Get a life man. Debate the topics, or get the **** out with your garbage.

And go get laid or something for goodness sake. Have you even seen teet in the last decade outside of hbo?

Vandy had an experienced QB playing the most important position on the field. We had a 3rd string true freshman QB making his 3rd start. That alone is enough to get most teams with the talent we had beat, but we didn't get beat until almost the last play. Vandy's WR was much better than any CB we had on him. Sutton is good, but he was a true freshman. The strength of Vandy's team were their DB's and they feasted on a true freshman QB. We had zero passing game after North got hurt and Dobbs threw 2 early picks. We were going to win or lose the game behind an underachieving O-line. We almost pulled it off miraculously.

If you can't look at a game rationally and see where the mismatches were and why we lost then there is no helping you. UT was favored by 1-2 points at home which means on a neutral field or away they would've been bigger underdogs.

Heh. I do find it hard to believe that someone could spend that much time on here. Hell, I'd be divorced.

The problem for Martin isn't even making or not making the NCAAT, it's that I honestly don't think he can do anything to win over the fanbase. Oh sure, a miracle Elite 8 or Final Four run, but let's be honest, that's not happening.

Going from a guy like Pearl to Martin would only work if Martin won. I'm not saying UT has to have a showman like Pearl, but if you're not going to have that you sure better win, otherwise you offer nothing.

So the bottom line is, even if we sneak into the NCAAT somehow, unless we make a run, it's not going to be enough. And sadly I think Martin is back regardless, but he'll 100% be back if we make the NCAAT no doubt.

Talk about not being able to debate the topics, you switch from bball to getting laid, such is life as former D3 water boy I guess.

And to stay on topic, try and keep up with me now Radio...

I asked if making the sweet 16 would away your support, judging from your response, not necessarily. Martin has to be doing the things you like to see, and coaching how you want him to, in order to get your support.

So I responded with, it's more about how the coach looks X's and O's than actually wins and losses. In other words, if he makes the sweet 16 but wins slow grind it out games where we get lucky late, your feelings stay the same. But if we get beat in round 1 in a 92-90 game where we play up tempo and run all game, he will have your support?

That's the point I was trying to get to with Sparty before he went off the edge, but volbeast made the point for me. Sweet 16 and he's still calling for Martin to be fired and wouldn't back him as our coach.

I said it a week ago, the best thing is for Martin to make the dance this year and take a job elsewhere after the year.
