A Sooners Fan Breakdown of Vols

I thought it was a pretty good assessment as well. He missed a few things here and there (Sutton being the most glaring). I doubt any of our posters could do as well and thorough a job without some extensive research first.
The non-menacing AJ part was an odd comment. Probably means he looked at his Ht and Wt instead of his play. Sometimes I have to watch with one eye closed when AJ gets his hands on someone.
Also, I happen to think we have an advantage not only in our WRs vs. their coverage guys , but also our coverage vs. their WRs - although by a slimmer margin in the latter case.
Unfortunately, line play can negate both of those perceived advantages.

We need to make sure that our team doesn't give up if Oklahoma does what it has been in the first half. They've been explosive to start the game.

Agree. We should see if the "culture changes" that Butch has spoken of show up in this game. Their collective desire to fight through adversity for 60 minutes will definitely be tested.

Most of those yards in both games came in the second half when the backups were in. Here's the halftime stats for each game:

Tulsa:
Oklahoma defense: 95 yards allowed (3.9 yards per pass; 0.6 yards per rush)

Louisiana Tech
Oklahoma held the Bulldogs to 89 yards in the first half, and Tech got 56 of them on their final possession before the break. OU was up 31-0 by then.
Sooner's Opponents:
LA Tech '13: 4-8

Tulsa '13: 3-9
______________________________________________
Tennessee's Opponents:
USU '13: 9-5 with a bowl win (Heisman Hopeful QB)

Ark St '13: 8-5 with a bowl win

Interesting stats based on WE'VE played the better teams to start the year off based on this...

Honestly I can't see this game being any worse than the Oregon beating we took last year. Oregon has a way more explosive offense than Oklahoma in my opinion. I feel like we are much more capable of keeping this game closer than what people are expecting.

We handled 2 good mid majors using about half our playbook. We definitely have more bullets in the gun. On offense Cam and the other DB's need to have a good day as I expect a lot of man coverage with us doing some things with the front seven. I guarantee you these players unlike many of our fans don't see themselves going into Norman as lambs for the slaughter.

First his most glaring oversight was not mentioning Coleman. Lol

That said while he's off to an extent the line issues and mismatches can't be overstated which is why most of the country envisions this as a blowout and isn't focusing in on the other details. If our oline can't hold a block matters little if we have an advantage at reciever. If the Dline can't get pressure on their QB it doesn't matter how good Sutton or anyone else in our backfield plays.

We going to whoop de azz!

Was watching SEC network this morning and they were talking about Stoops comments on SEC. Big point was scored on how many more players from SEC were drafted in the NFL over the last 2 years.

We may not whoop de azz, but I am optimistic about our chances to stay in this game. I cannot wait til Saturday gets here. Our biggest challenge I think will be establishing any sort of running game. Could our passing game open up some running?

I have just seen too many of these highly touted teams lay an egg almost every weekend.

Am I expecting to win.. no. Would I be totally shocked? Nope. I would not be shocked at any outcome in this game. If we win it wouldn't be like an Appy State/Michigan debacle a few years ago.

Last year, UT had a lack of speed on defense and Oregon was the fastest team in the NCAA. This year, UT is light and inexperienced on both sides of the line of scrimmage and OU is one of the best, most experienced and biggest teams on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Last year, Oregon was the worst possible non conference game UT could have played and this year, Oklahoma is the worst possible match up in non conference games.

BK may be right here. I absolutely agree about oregon last year. It is quite likely that you're right about Oklahoma , but from what our D has shown so far, there's really no evidence yet that we suck against the run.
That's just an assumption that some of us are making based primarily on how our D has been in recent years and the front 4 being inexperienced. It certainly cannot be based on what these guys this year have displayed.

Meh...sounds more like he's hoping Okie runs away in the second half. We will see. Could be to our advantage they are underestimating our speed on defense.

Glad to know you don't see us losing by more than 45 pts to Oklahoma. Very comforting 😳😁😊

Other than in the trenches I think our Vols match up very good all over the field. I think we have better athletes than they do. If we can find someway to play half way descent on the lines I like our chances of surprising alot of people saturday. GO VOLS!

I agree with him that Sooners should win rather easily, but forgetting about Sutton, who is one of the best corners in the nation, is pretty silly...

Yea he was just a all sec freshman now maybe if he was a a B1G all freshman they would of gave him his deserved props

Haha. The last time Butch was in Norman, he and his Cinciatti team almost walked away with a win. It took some last second heroics for OU to squeak out a win. I like Butch's chances better with his current talent pool.

With all of $hit Stoops has been talking about the SEC he is going to wound up tighter than a clock. If things don't go well early for the Sooners, expect panic to set in that sidelines. And deservedly so.

Hello Vol fans, I'm the guy that wrote the breakdown (don't stone me).

I do that kind of thing weekly on that site, and it's hard to really break-down a team that we haven't seen since what, '68? I went back and watched film of the first two games you guys had, reviewed the depth chart and roster, and provided as much information as I could for Sooner fans.

I'm not a Tennessee football expert, just passing along what I could find to readers of that board.

I want to make it clear that I don't think Tennessee is on the level of La Tech and/or Tulsa. I know Tennessee's roster is loaded with talent, albeit young. My comments sometimes come from what I see in statistics, and La Tech was a top 30 pass defense last year, that's why the comment was made. As for the Tulsa connection, they (Tulsa) had a QB that was capable of catching fire, if given time, so I was trying to draw more of a comparison with Worley being dangerous if given time.

Anyway, I'm not one of the Sooner fans that expects this to be 60-0, or similar. I do believe we will win, and it could be by a large margin, but that's more a reflection of what I feel about where these two teams are right now.

I certainly didn't write that review with any intent to offend anyone, just to pass along the things I had seen.

Have no worries. I appreciate your analysis because it's fairly in-depth for someone who isn't a fan of the team. People on here are going to nitpick because this is a team that we all watch very closely.

All I hope for is a good game this weekend! Pulling out a win would be huge and like most people, I expect our team to be competitive-- not a pushover.

I sure hope they are underestimating us a little bit anyway. Cause the way that sounded to me they think we are just very slightly better than La Tech.

Anyone know the rushing and passing yards OU has given up on defense in the first 2 games?

This is a fan talking. I hope their team thinks that too, but I seriously doubt it.

I understand, if someone wrote a review of the Sooners, I'd probably feel the same. Just wanted to clarify.

My folks are both graduates of UT, and I lived in Knoxville until I was about 8. I still have most of my family in East Tennessee, so I have a connection to the program (my earliest memories of going to games was in Neyland).

Oklahoma is my team (and where I went to school), but I've always quietly followed the Vols...just not nearly as close as the Sooners.

This game made me nervous the day it was announced. Because I know the kind of talent Jones is bringing into the program. I am very excited to travel back to Knoxville next year, but fully expect UT to be a completely different team.

I figured I share a little of my background, so that you could at least see I'm not a complete moron. :)

Sorry dude, but the fact that you abandoned our beloved Vols and turned Sooner suggests otherwise.
