A Sooners Fan Breakdown of Vols

Hello Vol fans, I'm the guy that wrote the breakdown (don't stone me).

I do that kind of thing weekly on that site, and it's hard to really break-down a team that we haven't seen since what, '68? I went back and watched film of the first two games you guys had, reviewed the depth chart and roster, and provided as much information as I could for Sooner fans.

I'm not a Tennessee football expert, just passing along what I could find to readers of that board.

I want to make it clear that I don't think Tennessee is on the level of La Tech and/or Tulsa. I know Tennessee's roster is loaded with talent, albeit young. My comments sometimes come from what I see in statistics, and La Tech was a top 30 pass defense last year, that's why the comment was made. As for the Tulsa connection, they (Tulsa) had a QB that was capable of catching fire, if given time, so I was trying to draw more of a comparison with Worley being dangerous if given time.

Anyway, I'm not one of the Sooner fans that expects this to be 60-0, or similar. I do believe we will win, and it could be by a large margin, but that's more a reflection of what I feel about where these two teams are right now.

I certainly didn't write that review with any intent to offend anyone, just to pass along the things I had seen.

Keep it classy, Sooner!

Well I talked to a OU fan on twitter and he said they would win because we are starting all freshmen on the offensive line. I told him no we are starting 1 maybe 2 but we just have inexperinced linemen. I hope they overlook us. If we can slow down the run attack I like when knight airs it out. He isn't the best passer IMO.

Pretty much the way I see Saturday going. We still lack the horses to run with the big dogs but we are getting there.

Welcome Sooner K! Enjoyed reading your analysis...you did forget Sutton and missed Hurd's height by a few inches - we have had a trove of "Hurd's too tall to play RB" threads...now a running joke on VN.

You did leave out the part about why you guys have been called Chokelahoma and the part about Butch's Cincy team playing y'all tough.

Hope it's a great game Saturday night, and I wouldn't be surprised by a blowout nor a Vol upset!

Again, welcome and glad you you spoke up!

GBO!

Thanks for your honesty but where does the optimism for a remotely large margin come from? Y'all had more games than not where you won by 2 TD's or less last year. Surely you consider us a more formidable opponent than Kansas, WVU, or TCU?

Seems like many of y'all, as well as the "experts" are using the Bama game as the only measuring stick. And like it or not, it was a consolation game for Bama and they had no motivation to be there. Y'all played lights out and had motivation to back up Stoops mouth, while they were a second away and 5 yards short from potentially making history. Instead they were just in another bowl game like everyone else. The same thing happened to them in 2008, yet no one has come close to beating them when a title is on the line. About as much stock as most are putting into that game is how little I put into it.

No doubt y'all are better than us, but we're a hell of a lot more talented than teams y'all have lost to or squeaked by in Bob's tenure. That is a common theme in his 16 yrs and not an outlier like beating a team (Bama) that many didn't expect him to.

La Tech and Tulsa aren't terrible? Soooo....is 93rd and 116th in total defense good all of the sudden? Maybe ranking 80th in total offense is good...

One player on defense? So Curt Maggitt and Cam Sutton are freshmen?

Overall his analysis is that we are young, they are not and if they get up early they will run the score up.

That's not insanity. How he worded some of the stuff is laughable, especially the inferior opponents bit. I almost spit out my mountain dew while I was reading it.

Moving the ball early against their defense and coming up with some stops early would be huge. We have to keep their crowd out of the game. If this game is close at halftime, then I am going to get happy.

If by some miracle we pull off the upset, I will probably faint.

Incidentally, for Vol fans whose memories don't go back that far, the '68 Orange Bowl was one thoroughly entertaining game. Oklahoma raced out to a 19-0 halftime lead. Tennessee made a sterling second half comeback only to see a last second, 43-yard Karl Kremser field goal attempt sail narrowly to the right and prevent Tennessee from achieving a 27-26 victory. Although I don't realistically expect the Big Orange to challenge Oklahoma that severely, it would certainly be a major statement by Butch and his boys if they should do so on the road.

Just a couple of points to ponder off your analysis.

Worley may not have been a very mobile QB last year by any means. But he had a large O line to help protect him. Problem is the O line this year is young (which you noted) and Worley has had to become more mobile and I think he's actually rushed for more yards in the first two games than all of last year. He's not a superior scrambling QB by any means, but he has already shown he can get out of the pocket and still make plays. Which brings me to my next point...

North and Pig aren't the only two threats on offense at WR. Two of the most talked about sure, but UT is quickly becoming WRU yet again and Worley has a whole stable of targets to toss to this year including the TE position. While Von Pearson might be out for this game, it doesn't mean there's a glaring hole in the offense. And with your young secondary, our receivers can make plays.

I think you underestimate the breakout potential of Hurd and Lane at the RB position. If Hurd gets into the open field and into your secondary, its a track meet. And Lane is a bruiser who can (and likely will) drag a few defenders along for an extra yard or two, size notwithstanding. Provided they haven't had breakout games, they both have the potential to wreak some havoc if underestimated.

And AJ Johnson is truly a man among boys out there and seems to be all over the field at the same time. Don't underestimate his leadership ability to motivate the defense and make some big plays even as young as they are. He'll easily be a first round draft pick this year and could pop into the top 20 or 15.

Cam Sutton has been covered pretty well in this thread. No sense in beating a dead horse. Stoops (the other-other one) would be a fool to discount him working the secondary. (I'm kinda hoping Knight is foolish enough to discount him as a threat and chucks a few his way)

One final thing. I'd be careful about associating our cupcakes with yours. I'd put Arky State out against Tulsa or LA Tech and expect them to win handily. Probably the same could be said about Utah State. While they are mid-major teams, by no means should they be considered inferior foes and even Vegas expected a closer game than what happened with USU. This team is surprising and can bite someone in the butt if they go in overconfident and cocky. While there haven't been many breakout plays this year, they have moved the chains pretty regularly and ground out points. And in the end it doesn't matter if North goes for a 40 yard bomb and scores or Lane pushes one in from five yards up the gut. Points on the board matter.

The UT preview failed to mention special teams and if we can get a few big plays out of this unit, this game could be very close heading into the 4th quarter when anything could happen.

I thought it was a pretty good assessment of our team.

Minus a few of the details mentioned, yes. But remember, this is Volnation.

Sunday-Tuesday morning are when we're literally the worst team ever to take the field.

Wednesday-Thursday people start getting a little wonky thinking we're amazing and are going to beat everyone.

Around Friday night and Saturday morning is when we're crowned the SEC champs warming up for the NC.

Repeat. There's this real magic hour late Tuesday night where the majority of people come off as rational. But it's very rare to see. It's like a majestic unicorn and then it all goes to hell.

But really, people are always defensive of their teams when an outsider make an assessment. If you make one or two mistakes, it opens up your submission to critique because on the internet, mistakes are more noticeable than facts.

Man, you don't know what you're talking about. We're amazing... we gonna whip dey azz and win the NC.

Hey folks, I thought it was only fair that I stop back by for a post game message. Not that any of you care what an opposing team's fan thinks of your team/program, but after being at the game and seeing everything in person, some of you may be interested:

First, you guys are incredibly talented. The offensive line had it's hands full most of the night, but I thought Worley played about as good a game as he could have. He's a tough kid that made some plays (especially early) that really kept the Vols in the game.

I am very impressed with the talent you guys have overall, but really impressed with the way your young guys played. Your defense did a great job most of the night, and really all but shut down our running game early.

I'm not going to tell you guys anything you don't already know, but it's very clear that this year's team is light year's ahead of last year's team.

You guys WILL win some games you're not favored in, and will go bowling this year. Butch Jones is a very good coach, and it's clear he is bringing the right mentality/talent to get Tennessee back where they belong.

I had a lot of fun with the Vol fans that showed up to the game (and you guys traveled well). Tennessee was well represented.

I haven't had a chance to see if there were any injuries on your team, but I hope not. Good luck the rest of the way!!

Next year's game is going to be epic, and I fully expect Tennessee to be an excellent team (ranked) going into that game.

Classy post bud! I'm one of those guys that always pounds his chest about the SEC but I've got to admit that Oklahoma will be the toughest team we face all year. The speed on your defense is downright scary. Good luck to you for the rest of the year and we'll see you next year in Knoxville!

Classy guys and OU would beat Bama again no doubt. Simms would look like a high sxhool 3rd stringer. Definitely the best team well face. Ill admit I always talk about how overrated OU is but I saw a powerful teams that had speed to go with it. If they don't screw up during the regular season they will be in the NCG mark it down.

Anyone who beats Bama is "OK" in my book. If you guys get a chance to play them again in the playoff this year, I will be rooting for you. Kick Bama butt.
