Accept EBT for cigs? Do it or you're fired

From what I have heard from the few people I know that have worked in the DHS, or other roles in public assistance, most of the people are humiliated enough to ask in the first place.

clearly not humiliated enough. Public shame is much more painful than that in front of a social worker who buys the story.

I don't really buy that. There are ****bags everywhere, but I would venture to say that you run into a lot more people on government assistance in a given day than you realize, simply because most of them A) actually do need it, B) don't abuse it, and C) are too proud to show it.

A) I'm sure our opinions of need are drastically different, as are our opinions of B) abuse and C) I don't care if they're too proud to show it. Our helping in that effort continues to exacerbate the problem. Humiliation was the lone defense the program had to limit rolls and we've undermined that by helping people hide it.

That's fair, I suppose. I just get tired of people, and it isn't necessarily those here, that think that because they saw one person abusing food stamps or whatever that everyone is just playing it. They really aren't

I would agree with that, but the burgeoning headcount suggests that the previously broken system is now just a money pit.

Agree with this. If people are hungry humiliation means little. Now some people flash EBT cards like they are carrying a platinum Amex.

personally I would be ok with paying for the upfront admin costs to get it going. Somehow I doubt it would cost us much more anyway and efficiencies later can cut down the costs whereas we will never police abuse of the system adequately (and it appears no one is concerned anyway)

I'm on your side on this but there is really no easy solution. Either they use their EBT card for cigs or the gov money goes to rent and they use what little money they could apply to rent on cigs. In both scenarios they are getting tax payer dollars and the cigs.

Here's a thought, why not put photos on access cards and let them use tnem to vote? Oh, wait, that would affect the rather large black market for the cards.

Some work harder to take the handout than actually finding a job or feel they're too good for a certain job. In SC EBT it only covers food. If whatever you have in your cart isn't covered by food stamps then you have a balance to pay out of pocket after you do the EBT transaction. Nothing like seeing somebody with a buggy full of steaks paying for it with EBT & leaving in a 40k ride or better. I've had some try & sell me food stamps. Want me to use their card & whatever I spend I give them half in cash. No thanks. It's a severely broken system like a lot of things in the US.

I saw a lot of this when I was a cashier at Wal-Mart in high school. Crazy abuse.

The hardest thing to do is be professional and bite your tongue.

Like the EBT abusers just mentioned a lot get rent vouchers or some sort of housing assistance & utility vouchers. All they gotta do now is find a way to pay for cable, beer, cigs, & gas.

Damn, I'm beginning to wonder why I work for a living when I could quit and enjoy life more living off other people's money. Hello new retirement plan.

Added bonus, I can come here and update pj on what I'm buying with his money.

j/k :)

When she scanned the cigarets and the EBT card, wouldn't the scanner come up with an error message saying that it cannot be used.

Had I owned the store, I would have fired any employee that refused to engage in legal transactions as well.

So?

That doesn't change that it's pathetic.

I do not remember commenting on whether or not purchasing cigarettes with an EBT card is pathetic.

Seems like this thread started due to an article expressing outrage that a clerk was fired for not doing what it was they were hired to do.

Again, it's pathetic. Your penchant for trying to get a rise out of people doesn't change that. The guy made a personal stand on something he considers worth said stand. I'd hire him for that job before I'd hire the cat that fired him.

And, her personal stand resulted in sacrificing her job. Kudos to her for that; I would still fire her were I running a business that revolved around selling as much as possible to whomever can produce legal tender. EBT is legal tender and can be used in such transactions.

Let me know when you track this fired clerk down and offer her a job.

I agree that EBT cards are used incorrectly, however, in this case the EBT user could buy whatever he wanted with the cash part of the card.
You hire her for the job over the cat that fired her and the EBT user was not allowed to purchase the cigs, welcome BIG lawsuit.
