But he doesn't think it will happen.

John Adams: Bruce Pearl still could be UT's best option » Knoxville News Sentinel

[Tennessee fans] are tired of mediocre basketball. They’re also bored.

Pearl brought them success (six consecutive NCAA tournaments) and excitement right up to the moment he was fired three years ago for lying to NCAA investigators over a minor recruiting violation.

It was an unseemly and puzzling ending to an era.

Why would someone as savvy as Pearl lie to NCAA investigators? Did he have a sudden burst of stupidity? Was it an act of arrogance? Or was he trying to cover up greater transgressions?

UT administrators probably pondered each of those questions.

But there’s no questioning this: Pearl has paid dearly for his mistake. Never mind that he’s gainfully employed and still present in college basketball as an ESPN analyst. He cost himself three years of his coaching career.

His sentence is almost up. At the end of this season, schools can try to hire him without having to explain themselves to the NCAA.

Could UT be one of those schools?

I asked that to half-a-dozen local media-types. “No way” was the consensus opinion.

I agree — unless UT’s powers-that-be put the past behind them and the best interest of the program above all else.

I'll take him if he brings back his up tempo pressing type philosophy that he ran his first 3 years...but I can't watch another boring offense like we've been watching the past 3 years and the last 3 years CBP was here...please save the "yeah but he made it to the Elite 8" oh well that offense was just as boring and hit and miss as the offense we are seeing now and made us lose to some bad teams just like we do now. Either bring that back or look somewhere else.

Edit: Larry Austin and Thompson would be perfect for that up tempo...

why are the only options for UT coaches ones who we've fired?

such a lazy filler piece by Adams and a perfect example of why no one wants to pay for that crap

The question is do you want a elite 8 coach or a final 4 coach. If you want an elite 8 coach that's fine go with Pearl. But I want a final 4 coach that will put players in the NBA every year...give me Howland please :)

I think it is safe to say that an "Elite 8" coach sounds pretty darn good over what we've seen the last 3 years. Give me the "Elite 8" coach.

Lose versus win. Not hard.

So if Zo bombs out, which is likely based on historical performance, do you trust Bama Dave to bring a top coach that turns the program into a winner like Bruce did? Bama Dave has been an AD a couple of times and assistant to the AD (Bama) in his past. Did any of the those programs have a strong, winning, basketball program? NOPE. So do you now trust he will still be able to do that because he played basketball at Bama and has what some believe is a strong background in the sport? NOPE.

He lucked into Butch after striking out a few times. Maybe you think he will luck into it again. And fans wonder why our Vol programs have sunk so low in recent times.

Ok that's fine if you just want to go to a couple sweet 16's and 1 elite 8 but I want final fours and Howland can and would get us those.

If Petrino can do a 360 at 'ville, then it is not out of the realm that Pearl could be hired back.

Would I be ok with Pearl coming back? Yes.

Would Pearl be my first choice? No.

Do I think it'll ever happen? Absolutely not.

I agree and our politicians lie all the time and keep their jobs. My guess is Butch does not want to deal with the cronies that threw him under the bus.

Give me a break. That uptempo / full-court press stuff is a gimmick. You have to be able to run a half-court offense to win championships, and it doesn't have to be boring. We still got out and ran in Pearl's final years, but we could also match up against fundamentally sound half-court teams.
