Adams: Re-hiring Pearl would be in the best interest of the program

Sure we do. It is only you Johnny come latelies that don't understand that we want our coach back.

Were you to busy searching for anti Bruce comments that you missed where I agreed with the poster who said they'd take him back?

I can say I would take him back and support the program. However I can also say I realize that it's not going to happen.

He was completely right. The last three years we dropped in scoring every year to 69 points per game his last year and only 19 wins. We went half court and scoring went down. Bruce o was about like Martin's his last three years.

But if Martin is fired which I think won't happen I would welcome Bruce back. But if he is fired Shaka Smart is the best option by far. Uptempo O. Pressing D. Final Four coach with a team full of nobodies.

So what? Scoring goes down when you run a slower pace on offense. We didn't take as many risks on defense and were able to keep points-against down. During our E8 run, there wasn't a team in that tourney that we couldn't compete with. The style of play of his later teams could favorably match up to multiple schemes. And Pearl's final season was an outlier...it was an obvious rebuild year due to roster turn-over and lingering fecal storm.

I just think the uptempo style is good for regular season success, but it gets exposed in single-elimination formats. Much more likely to win big with a half-court offense.

Yes. People act like Pearl accidentally went away from that up tempo style.

He went away from it because he wanted to win it all and he was a good enough coach to coach different styles and be successful.

I don't think pearl would be my first choice either.

However, were not going to get my first choice. And we arnt getting anyone else's first choice either.

I believe pearl is the best choice this administration could hire. That says more about them than any coach.

I truly think Pearl honestly cares about UT basketball, more than any other coach at least. (Yes I'm aware of the nega peeps out there that will chime in......"if he cared so much about the university why did he lie, cheat, etc")

To that, I don't know, but losing out on 3 years of doing what you/he loves would be the best thing that could have happened to him. I think he would be a very good hire, but I don't think it will happen because the NCAA spotlight would be on us too hard, and the administration doesn't really need that right now with the football team doing so well in recruiting.

Not saying they are doing anything wrong, but we don't want the ncaa snooping around right now.

How hard is it to be a sports writer?

Teams can't hire Pearl when the season ends, his show cause ends in August, right before the 14-15 season.

Sports writers are the lowest of low in media.

I've seen multiple posters on this board suggest a school could/should hire Pearl this spring. He can coach and be around the players, he just can't recruit until August, he can fill a staff with capable recruiters.

Guess you disagree with that thought?

Well I hope CCM can turn this thing around, but with each loss comes discussion of bringing Pearl back. If Louisville can bring Petrino back UT can justify more reason to bring Pearl back.

I'm not sure why some of you are so into Howland. The guy did get to the Final Four 2-3 times but there needs to be an addendum to that fact.

1. He was at UCLA which is a historic basketball school in a talent rich region.
2. His offenses were pretty bad. He won with defense and NBA talent that overcame his poor offensive approach. To me, he is Kevin O'Neil with the talent that UCLA is capable of pulling.

But maybe I'm wrong.

My concern was his lack of control over the team.

That said, I would take him over Pearl

The University would also have to go before the NCAA and risk possible punishments. Now, Pearl has petitioned the NCAA to end his show cause early. I guess if he wins that, he's a free man.

Lose versus win. Not hard.

So if Zo bombs out, which is likely based on historical performance, do you trust Bama Dave to bring a top coach that turns the program into a winner like Bruce did? Bama Dave has been an AD a couple of times and assistant to the AD (Bama) in his past. Did any of the those programs have a strong, winning, basketball program? NOPE. So do you now trust he will still be able to do that because he played basketball at Bama and has what some believe is a strong background in the sport? NOPE.

He lucked into Butch after striking out a few times. Maybe you think he will luck into it again. And fans wonder why our Vol programs have sunk so low in recent times.

Not trying to derail the thread, but I find comments like this humorous. Not because I don't like Jones, but he hasn't proven he's "the guy" yet. He has proven he can recruit, yes. But he hasn't proven he can get it done on the field.

That's not a knock on him, because I didn't expect him to with this year's team, and not because I expect him to fail. But I can't say we "lucked out" because the jury is still out and will be until the end of next season at the least, if not longer.

I've said it a thousand times and I'll say it again, there is no reason why we can't hire him back. Tell Jimmy to shut up, swallow your pride and bring the man home for one of the greatest home comings in the history of college basketball. The fan base he built is dying off with every passing Cuonzo Martin game

Well said. Let's all remember that we went into the Kentucky game with the possibility and fear of CBJ becoming the first coach in UT history to lose 8 games in a season.

It all comes down to putting butts in seats $$$$$$$$$$$$ and counzo isn't getting it done. The powers to be will not stand for all the dough that could be being made at these games but isn't cause we're losing and losing and losing. Something's gonna give very soon, either we start winning and make the tourney or counzo and co. start hunting another job!

The problem is the "powers that be". As long as Jimmy Cheek is here, it won't happen. Cheek has been more destructive to the athletics programs at UT than anyone. Pearl lied to the NCAA, but he was set up by the booger picker. If Cheek and Hamilton had handled the situation correctly, Pearl would be coaching here today. Most every BB coaches in the country have done a lot of things worse than Pearl, but we will never hear about them because their administrations back them up and manage infractions.

Our only hope now for BB is for CCM to turn things around and pull us out of mediocrity. That's where we are now and I am afraid that is where we will be for the foreseeable future.

I would like to agree with you, but people like Cheek don't seem to believe financial strength matters. Cheek is an educational bureaucrat who is oblivious to real world situations. The only way to get him to understand this is to affect his paycheck or show him the door. Both he and Hamilton wanted to run the AD on the cheap so we get people like Dooley and Cuonzo. He doesn't understand that the top line (revenue) matters and the only way to increase it is attendance and motivated fans.
