AJC is going to take down uga.

Ain't no chance in hell Georgia would want to go through that discovery....

(Not dismissing your point, just making an observation)
Unless it was really a slam dunk. This is really unusual. As I mentioned above, this Alan Judd the reporter apparently got fired from the Louisville paper about 20 years ago for making stuff up and they must have really been alarmed with what they found in their internal investigation.

Your points make sense. I just keep reading this and I just go back to Gary Parrish. He got his big break by breaking the Albert Means/Bama story and he talked numerous times on his radio show about how (as a young reporter) he was so appreciative that his editor stood by him through all the legal threats, physical threats, calls for his job, withholding access, etc....

The author being sloppy is possible, if not probable. Georgia throwing its weight around is possible as well.

I think it's probably a bit of both but just from watching Josh Pate it seemed like there might be some real problems with the reporter in question so you give a bully like Kirby Smart an actual leg to stand on and it's a bad combination. You go after somebody like that you need to have the goods. Like Omar said:

Here is the exact things that got the author of the article fired

1. He combined two sentences of a quote together in a way that did not change the meaning.

2. The AJC could not confirm the exact number (11) of assault allegations against women. They could confirm some but not the specific number.

Let's not kid ourselves, this was UGA threatening to withhold access to the program unless something was done....

For those saying retraction, this is not a retraction of the story. It is we will clean it up and give UGA something to look better about and we will keep full access for our sports writers and some amuck that made a few errors loses his job.

They didn’t say anything in story was not true just that he combined parts of two quotes without noting that when the essence of the quotes were still accurate and two the number could have been 5 , 8, 11 or 15 incidents we not sure because reporter didn’t have the exact 11 names.

This allows AJC to say they made corrections and story was printed and allows UGA to say it was retracted when the allegations were not retracted just corrected.

Still smells in Athens.

The AJC's got lawyers too and they are trying to save their client's face. Bottom line is the AJC f-ed up. You don't do this on the 7th day of the 7 day state libel deadline and fire the reporter if you don't think you've got some exposure. I was very pleased with the AJC when this article came out as my prior comments ITT thread show but Josh Pate was on this from the beginning and I got to give him credit. This is him from about a week ago:
