Just caught up with four-star ATH Damarcus (Dee) Beckwith of Florence (Ala.) High School following his official visit to Tennessee this weekend. He said the visit helped the Vols and gave him a chance to show his mom what they have to offer, and making the trip with his family sort of underscored the benefits of attending a school like Tennessee that's closer to home compared to Florida, the other team he's strongly considering. He said it's also an added bonus that his half-brother, Camryn Beckwith, is committed to Tennessee as a preferred walk-on. But he said he doesn't expect that to be a major factor in his decision.
Beckwith said Florida still is his leader coming off the visit to Tennessee, but he still has to take his official visit to Gainesville, Fla., next weekend. It will be only his second time visiting the Gators, so he still needs to get a better feel for the program there in addition to the distance from home. But he said this visit definitely helped Tennessee. Kentucky was the third contender for him, and while he once was planning to visit there this weekend, he's now not sure the Wildcats will get a visit down the stretch. He hasn't ruled out trying to squeeze in a quick trip to Kentucky, maybe on Feb. 2 right before the dead period leading up to signing day, but he's still looking into whether that's really possible.

Beckwith said the Vols again indicated they're recruiting him as an athlete. They've sort of left his projected position open-ended throughout his recruitment, and that didn't change this weekend. He said wide receiver or even running back could be on the table, and they told him they would get him on campus and just let him figure out where he wants to play. But their thought is to just get the ball in his hands in one way or another.

He also met with Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes' staff — he has said he plans to play both sports at the school he chooses to attend — during the visit, and he posed for pictures in both basketball and football uniforms during his photo shoot on campus. Having a chance to play basketball at the school of his choice is important, but he doesn't seem to have a great feel at this point for any possible differences in his opportunities to play basketball at each school. But his cousin is Lamonte Turner, and Beckwith has talked with Vols basketball Rick Barnes at times throughout his recruitment.

Full story on Beckwith coming shortly.

Watch his film. You may change your mind. Kid is a fantastic football player.
oh I’ve watched his film! He’s an absolute stud! Just not sure if he projects as a QB at the next level. Especially with Bailey coming in. I mean, if this kid comes to UT and wins the QB job then we have a seriously special talent on our hands. Yes, please!

“Really, they showed me everything the past few times I came. My purpose this time was to show my mom around the college and stuff — the academics part — and just basically everything they showed me my first couple times that I came, I just wanted to show her.” Beckwith said his mother was impressed by her first look at Tennessee.
“She liked it,” Beckwith said. “She thought this would be a place for me, especially by it being closer than Florida or closer than all the other ones. She enjoyed it.

“The distance, that helped it out a lot. And then my mom liked it. It kind of boosted them up there.”
He said there’s “no doubt” that distance from home will play a role in his college decision, and it has become more important to him and his family with signing day approaching. “We can always fly (to Florida),” Beckwith said. “But, I mean, it costs money to fly, so this four-hour drive isn’t really that bad compared to a nine-hour drive.”

Beckwith said he “spent the most time” during the visit with Tennessee offensive coordinator Jim Chaney and offensive line coach Will Friend, the same two coaches who traveled to Florence on Friday to meet with him and see him play basketball. Vols wide receivers coach Tee Martin and head coach Jeremy Pruitt also met with Beckwith during the visit. “We really weren’t talking much about football,” Beckwith said. “We were just hanging out, having fun.”

“They told me I’m labeled as an athlete, so that’s what I’m going to be here,” Beckwith said. “They were like, they would move me all over the field in different scenarios, and they’ll find ways to get the ball in my hands. It’s still the same, as athlete. It’s not a particular position for me. It’s really receiver and more, like, in the backfield. “I’ve heard it from a couple schools, actually, that thought I would be a pretty all right running back. I’ve actually played running back in the past, so I wouldn’t have a problem with it.

“They told me once I got here, they’ll kind of mold me, and it was really up to me to figure out where I wanted to play and where I wanted to be at. So when I got here, when I start to practice and play at it more, then I’ll see what position is the best fit for me. They were just like, as soon as they get me to work out and all this, then they’ll see what position I’ll play and stuff like that,” Beckwith said. “But it’s probably going to be the same as high school — like, on the wing.”

His half-brother, running back Camryn Beckwith of Killen, Ala., already has committed to Tennessee as a preferred walk-on and accompanied him on the visit this weekend. “About us playing together, I mean, it’s not really that big of a factor because we’ve been separated for, like, three years now,” Damarcus Beckwith said. “But us playing together, I mean, it could happen and that would be great for our families to come to one place and watch us play instead of us splitting up, and then they’ll have to go to two different colleges.”

“Really, I’m looking for how my parents would come to the games and stuff like that, and how we could get used to going that distance — if we’re going to fly or if they’re going to take that nine-hour drive,” Beckwith said. “If they do manage to fly, then we’ll see.”

Beckwith said on visiting with Jeremy Pruitt’s football program, “we just sat around and talked a bit like we would if I was on the team already. Actually more than we have in the past, so I feel like it made us closer.”

Beckwith is a dynamic athlete that can play various positions. Which has made his recruitment intriguing to say the least. In an interview in November with VR2, Beckwith said on all of the schools recruiting him, “”they are all telling me I am a threat everywhere because I can line up anywhere; at tight end, quarterback, or wide receiver. Really, they are all telling me the same thing. They are telling me I am versatile and can line up anywhere.”

Jeremy Pruitt’s staff made one of their final pitches to him this weekend and broke down what they could see from him on the field. Beckwith said, “they explained to me how they could use my versatility all over the field. Yet they are letting me workout for qb.”

It was mentioned in VR2’s article today that Lamonte Turner is Beckwith’s cousin. Hadn’t seen that mentioned. Also, that we are telling him he can play anywhere, and that we worked him out at QB. I assume that’s Pruitt letting these kids give it a shot wherever they want. Can’t imagine Beckwith being anything other than WR or TE at the next level.
We better be telling him he can play anywhere.
UF for sure is /per miss Mullen 💋💋
