‘23 AL CB Rickey Gibson (Tennessee commit)

Turnage can be a true corner but we didn’t think we had a true NB without Theo. I think Flowers and Charles are a lock to start, but I feel like one will be at NB. In my mind, this is the depth chart for ‘22…
CB: Hadden, Williams, Rucker
CB: Turnage, Burrell, Harrison
NB: Charles, Walker, Slaughter
S: McCollough, McDonald, Thomas
S: Flowers, Turrentine
If I had my pick though, I’d move Turrentine ahead of McCollough. Martinez plays it safe though.

I can't help but think Slaughter is going to play somewhere

He was terrible, but still played ahead of Turnage and Hadden last year. Would be surprised if that changes this year.
Yikes
looked like one of the absolute worst corners in the conference quite easily. He panics almost immediately and grabs/holds as bad as anyone I’ve ever seen. He was in Marsalis Teague territory last yr. Not really trying to knock him but it’s just the truth unfortunately.

I remember similar sentiment towards Emmanuel Moseley. 🤔

Imo he had some trouble adjusting to the speed of the SEC. He showed flashes tho, and I think he could be a guy who becomes a viable option back there by midseason or so.

I'm not trying to completely excuse Burrell at all. He made mistakes. But one thing folks here need to remember is that there are times when what we think is the failure of one player is actually someone else missing an assignment and leaving the first guy out to dry.

The incredible thing to me with Burrell was the number of times when he appeared to be in perfect position only to have the WR make a circus catch.

100%. Hopefully he has improved greatly

The staff considers him our number one guy….. a recruit recently mentioned him as the next guy that they will get drafted….. we shall see….. we need better pass rush, and depth to be better all the way around on defense.

I hope he does well. But that $&¡77y pass defense in the bowl vs Purdue wasn’t just on the pass rush. Boilermakers 2nd and 3rd string WR straight roasted our corners. Easily most concerning position going into the season for me.

Burrell is a work in progress, but that's why you have an offseason. Some of our fans act like players never develop or improve. Some idiots will boo this kid and melt down if he's a starter next year. No one was overjoyed about Theo Jackson last year I don't think. The Purdue game is over. Time for some of yall to move on.

He was extraordinarily bad that game,
But he was still a little scary most games...

He didn't have one solid game. Hadden did.
Turnage did. Burrell got benched a few times last year...

Like it or not, Burrell will start. He played very well last year outside of a couple huge mistakes that exposed him. I’m not saying it would be my choice, but based on what Martinez thinks of him, he doesn’t let those mistakes happen, he’s a starter without question.
Im not sure I agree with the “played very well” part, but you’re probably right on the starting part. I can hope though

It's a shame Moseley didn't play as well at Tennessee as he has in the NFL....
If you remember, Moseley arrive here weighing about 145 pounds. He was fast, but had to learn how to play on the defensive side of the ball. he gained a few pounds, maybe up to 164, our still wasn't ready to star in the SEC , bur was drafted for his potential. The rest is history.

We tend to overlook teams not in our conference…. That qb threw 40-52 390 yds 4 TDs 0 int against Ohio state…. That offense was very good.

Agreed. That QB also has a completion percentage of 74 or higher in 8 of the 12 games he played in. We held him to his lowest completion percentage too, but I think purdue was a bad matchup for us last year.

Again. I'm talking about off-season development. If someone passes him, he will sit. If not he will start. I've known Martinez for years and he's as good as it gets.

I hope that’s the case.

I just think we’ll be doing good to get 7 wins unless we can find a few upgrades in the defensive back 7. On the flip side, I really think we could win 9 (10 inc. bowl) if they can get those spots fixed.

Shame Moseley was a hell of a boxer. Not sure he was ever in the NFL though, might wanna check yer facts there lama

Happens every time. "But they're not in the SEC!"

As we drop to Purdue, Pitt, BYU, West Virginia...though we did snap off ole Indiana by 1 point at least.

Man I really hope those days are over 😑

I I think overall depth was our biggest issue…. We were playing defensive lineman over 100 snaps and second quarters were horrible bc that is when the coaches to give our guys a break.

We're not talking about Martinez. And I've said the same thing about him so it's a moot point that he is a good coach.

Alontae wasn't that big of a surprise to get drafted. He had 2 good years, 1 bad year then a great 1 as a SR.

Burrell has had many opportunities to shine and hasn't. He's gotten bigger and stronger and till has weak knees when the balls in the air. More than likely you'll see Charles bumped to CB and then he, Hadden Turnage and Rucker will platoon that position.

Literally Harrison Bailey could have covered Purdue's receivers better than he did.

You still miss the point. You have the gift of stating the obvious. See ya.
