'21 AL DT Lee Hunter (UCF commit)

Makes no sense that we would take Moten, but not this guy.

Why doesn't it make sense? RG recruited both of these guys and would know his preference. The pitch to Moten is his ability to play the 3 technique. Not sure if RG thinks that this kid can do that on the same level as Moten. Just a guess here.

I doubt we are passing on him. I think people are taking lack of noise for meaning we aren’t trying. They have tried for a few and missed. I don’t think they are offering everyone in the portal. He might not have been on the board and now could be

I want to know about these issues on defensive side of ball recruiting wise.
Maybe Banks isn't fighting hard enough to fill the gaps on his side of the ball? I don't know. I just think we're missing out on some good players. And I still have serious doubts we'll see the same level of talent in the Spring.

Banks is not your prototypical run stuffing MLB. He is being asked to fill a need not in his wheelhouse. Just part of the scheme. He needs to be able to pursue side to side. Would be great as the WILB in a 3-4 defense.

Are we talking about the linebacker or the defensive coordinator?

If you’re not a run stuffer and his coverage struggles are well documented, that’s a bad combination for our teams best LB

The DC. My bad, I assumed people would know I meant that maybe Tim Banks isn't making his needs on defense known enough with CJH. Maybe Tim Banks thinks he can work with what he has? I just think if I was the DC of this Tennessee team, I'd be wanting some portal help to shore up some areas. Another LB, a couple of secondary, an experienced Edge, maybe another DL. Our offense will keep us in games, but if we can shore up our defense, it'll help us win some of those close games.

Sounds like T Banks isn’t doing his job to good, how many recruits does him and BMJ have coming in for 2022

Recruiting is still the biggest concern, on that I agree. But given the COVID restrictions and the NCAA investigation, mixed with being a new staff, it's too early to judge.

Also, looks like we may sign some elite defenders in 23. The jury is still out

Problem is the IFs. Nobody knows. Are we pressing for him? Does RG really want him? Is there something going on behind the scenes we don’t know about? What if the guy just doesn’t like TN? It doesn’t like Banks or Garner? There are many reasons. This whole thing about people not understanding why we are missing out on guys is silly.

We know they went hard after Verse. Last year he brought in multiple guys (DE, 2 CBS, a LB). I think he's just making sure he adds the right guys (maybe some wishful thinking on my part).

I'm also hopeful that between progression of all our d-line (high hopes for Young, Baron, Thomas, Terry, etc) and a few key additions (1-2 corners, a safety, and a LB) that our defense can creep back to average.

there's always a reason.

whatever it is it isnt up to me to fix it.

I think its completely natural as a competitive person to want to see our team take next step. We are in a good position. Conversely we could also take a step back if our glaring needs arent fixed. Juss sayin.

I think it looks like we are being selective. Went after verse and missed, went after a juco CB and a safety and missed. I do t see them sitting around, I see them picking out people that can make a difference and recruiting them. So far we missed in 3 of them, we still have 3-4 months to evaluate transfers for the right fit.

Funny how people have turned it into We aren’t even trying to recruit on D.

It should also occur to us that there is a possibility that the staff likes some of its younger defensive players and expects them to develop, so they’re being picky about who they pursue unless they see someone they think is better than what current players will develop into next year. Maybe, just maybe, they believe Willis and Mitchell are going to be solid LBs, Eason a solid DL, Charles and McDonald solid safeties, Turnage, Hadden, and/or Rucker solid CBs. And maybe they feel like some guys coming in like Des Williams, Perry, Herring, and/or Thomas are going to be able to play well next season.

So just maybe, they’re not just looking to throw a scholarship at any warm body because they think some or all of these guys (or perhaps others I didn’t mention) are going to be good players next year and they’d rather wait and see if something better comes along this spring, be it on defense or just best available.
