'24 AL EDGE Jordan Ross (Tennessee)

He actually doesn't make the big bucks. He's #8 of 12 in Salary for our coaching staff. He was the only position coach to not get a contract extension. If he was doing his job and putting guys in the NFL, he wouldn't be sweating out the final year of his contract. We all know what that means.. Improve your secondary or look for new employment after the season. There's a reason he was at C. Fla and not a bigger name school. Who was the last DB or Safety he had drafted, started or even played in the NFL?
So what you’re saying is the guy making the biggest bucks is taking care of the situation with the guy making less big bucks. Cause #8 coaching salary is a whole lot more than anyone in here is getting paid to coach.

I think Heupel is a better X’s and O’s Coach. If the two coaches swapped rosters, what would the results have been? Also have to remember, Kirby walked into a stacked cupboard of talent already. Kirby’s a great motivator and recruiter, Heupel is better at X’s and O’s and scheming. Heupel is probably a more “likeable” player’s coach as well.

A lot of folks probably don’t want to hear this but Kirby is probably more similar to Fulmer. During his prime, Fulmer was a great motivator and recruiter that basically out talented people outside of Florida (talent was more even and we had more talent at times). Fulmer also had good coordinators, especially with Cutcliffe.

Spot on. Tennessee often has a talent advantage over Florida in the 90s (not by a huge margin), but Spurrier and Stoops were superior from an X’s & O’s standpoint AND from a culture/psychological standpoint. I think Heupel not only gives us a schematic advantage, but he also gives us a great culture/psychological advantage that this program has never enjoyed. Not to this level, at least.

Thing is... we don't know that they aren't in fact recruiting near or at that level. Almost every time we hear praise of Arion Carter who was a BIG priority for Saban... Telander who Bama and UGA weren't really interested in is mentioned too. Squirrel was a 3* except for On3. Herring and Perry are both starting to look like SEC caliber LBs. Walker and Mincey were both rated 3* as transfers.

It is naive in the extreme not to recognize that guys prioritized by Bama, UGA, OSU, and a few others or particularly more than one top tier program get a ratings bump. That does not mean that guys they aren't after aren't just as talented or have just as much potential. That is how Dabo made his climb. Oddly, after the recruiting sites started giving his targets that bump... his rosters appear to have become less talented.

Finally, someone else gets it. Recruiting rankings are not science.

No. There is a lot of art to it... and the recruiting sites are very often "tracing" the work of top recruiters like Saban. There are some objective things like speed, size, strength, etc. But even then there are a lot of guys who are pretty similar in measurables.

I also didn't mention the fact that top programs use genuine recruiting consultants to help them find and evaluate prospects. IIRC, UT may have revolutionized that a long time ago. Programs pay for their work. It isn't public until the recruiting web sites copy it by paying attention to who Saban, Smart, Day, etc seem to be chasing..

Majors was a pain for assistant coaches to work with, but the story was, if you could last two years with Majors, you'd likely land in a very good coaching position elsewhere. Fulmer took the opposite approach with assistants, making Tennessee a coach-friendly environment and making continuity of coaching a program hallmark. He also encouraged those relationships across the UTAD into other programs.

Heupel has upped that game, making the football program "coaches' families-friendly." Love the descriptions of life inside the building, how kids are always around, with players and kids and families overlapping in their lives. I think that may be a rarity, and if so, it could pay off in the portal with some guys we missed on the first go-'round.

LOL--they've got the rest of their lives to make money being miserable with the people around them! That's what corporate careers are for! :)

Switch allocations of money onto Ross. Put the full court in him in panic after losing franklin
Glad our staff doesn’t panic like some folks on here. They are always working. Folks need to be fans and trust our coaches, they aren’t perfect but they know their business. Sure it’s okay to question things now and then. But for this team to have come as far as we have entering year 3 of Heupel’s tenure I don’t see how any Vol fan isn’t excited. Folks living and dying on every recruit need to relax. We are doing well and we will get our share. Every recruit is different, there are many things involved, and they are all not about money. For the vast majority it is not all about money. But carry on. Can’t wait for kick off when the real action begins and all the talking ends!!!! GBO!!!!
