'24 AL EDGE Jordan Ross (Tennessee)

The AP comment about a “team in the weeds” or whatever he said and then Franklin picking Ole Miss makes me think AU is in this one more than most think but we will see.
Maybe but the fact that even after Franklin committed to ole miss non of the auburn mods and insiders have mentioned Ross makes be believe Ap was just being paranoid. Nobody but ap is mentioning auburn and he hasn’t said that since Tuesday

That’s true

Switch allocations of money onto Ross. Put the full court in him in panic after losing franklin
It's a legitimate concern. Auburn is overspending to make a splash in recruiting, so they could very well turn their attention to Ross since he's a high ranked in-state kid that would help ease the sting of losing a high ranked d-lineman they were expecting to land. NIL money leads to some funny stuff happening in recruiting. UT could lead for Ross all the way up to his announcement day and one call from Auburn with a huge NIL offer could change everything.

When has it ever not been that way with some recruits and particularly those being targeted by top programs? Not sure how long you've followed this but for me it has been decades now. One thing to remember is that much of what is reported even by the most reliable sources... simply isn't true. Recruits tell reporters what they want to hear all the time. They change their minds even after honestly telling someone that a particular school is favored.

Really? So it happens to every school including those at the apex of the food chain like Bama... but it is putting my head in the sand to recognize it?

Between the media and fan boards strong narratives will build. They become accepted as the truth. They may never be an accurate reflection of what a kid is thinking. So there may be no "sudden changes"... just narratives that got smashed when a kid revealed what he had decided to do.

Not that long ago the handwringing here over Warren had reached a fever pitch. All of the "momentum" was headed elsewhere- "He gone"... Opponent message boards were confident. Insiders were sure UT had lost momentum then after his public commitment we learn that he had made up his mind and been solid to UT for weeks.

A lot of fans don't realize that coveted recruits with multiple options view these universities and the overall recruiting process much differently than most people think.

More than ever, the process is a business decision and recruits have more leverage than in the past. They are a needed, valuable commodity that programs need to support a multi-billion dollar industry. You have top programs looking to stay on top who are willing to pay but don't have to overpay (usually). There are a lot of second tier programs looking to make the jump to the top tier and they will pay and sometimes overpay.

There are about a dozen former top tier programs that have been relatively down and are often willing to overpay for the right players. Then you have the lesser programs that either want to be in the upper tiers, have boosters and fanbases with over-inflated views of their programs and others who just desperately want to be compete. They will definitely pay and overpay.

More than ever, highly talented kids can go anywhere and get recognized so staying close to home, going to a school because of location/atmosphere or a host of other reasons is a viable choice. Throw in NIL money and social media attention and it's a wild scene. Plus, we live in an overall culture where "trolling" is considered funny and cool.

These kids view fanbases and sports media in some similar ways that celebrities view paparazzi. They want the attention but fans/media can be very annoying, push false narratives and make negative assumptions with little to base them on and be highly critical of kids they know little about. Kids have grown up during a time where "shocking the world" or "taking their talents to _____" gets lots of attention and internet clout. Many enjoy toying with fans/media and laughing at the overreactions.

I pay less and less attention every year to anything other than who commits to UT.

Ole Miss was in Franklin’s top 5. It’s not like it came completely out of nowhere. The barn isn’t even in his top 4. Think we should be fine dodging their slimy boosters

Could depend on the kid and if they want to put on a show.

Surely no 18 year old kid has ever pulled a hat from under the table.

But I don’t know anything about this kid though. Hope he’s a Vol.

Auburns not in the picture. He doesn't seem like that type kid, but who knows. He wants to get out of Alabama.

Getting out of Alabama sounds like a great idea to me. Hope he does.

I was responding to the “hat not on the table” theory. That wouldn’t matter if a kid wanted to put on a show.

What?? No he shouldn't. Now if the Hookers were brought in and paid to bang recruits and players, that's a different issue.
He had players admitting they were getting paid at a time that was still illegal. He should have received at least a 4-5 year show-cause for those violations.

No. There is a lot of art to it... and the recruiting sites are very often "tracing" the work of top recruiters like Saban. There are some objective things like speed, size, strength, etc. But even then there are a lot of guys who are pretty similar in measurables.

I also didn't mention the fact that top programs use genuine recruiting consultants to help them find and evaluate prospects. IIRC, UT may have revolutionized that a long time ago. Programs pay for their work. It isn't public until the recruiting web sites copy it by paying attention to who Saban, Smart, Day, etc seem to be chasing..

Exactly. And then you have to take into account the fact that different players fit better/worse in different systems…and then you have to account for culture. Given all these things, recruiting rankings just aren’t the end-all/be-all some make them to be.

Of course, many point to the fact that highly rated classes lead to championships, but that’s a self-fulfilling prophecy when players are ranked higher simply because they sign with Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, State, etc. Clemson has shown that they’re not science. Hell, Kansas State has shown it for years…find guys who fit your culture, can do the things you need in your system, and develop them.
