‘23 AL S Sylvester Smith

We have multiple guys who are natural safeties that should be moved back there with our additions at corner and Burrell being back healthy. Not worried about a high school kid who likely wasn’t going to be a factor next season anyways.

Ol Burrell huh lol

You’re right though on the other part. We have a few natural safeties. Wouldn’t mind one from the portal either.

He definitely was going to be factor.

With that said, Jack Slaughter is not livermush. He's perhaps the most rangy defensive player we have.

Then we have 4 star Turrentine waiting his turn.
And D Slaughter along with C Charles are probably above average safeties if allowed to move back there. Thomas as a special teams ace at 6'2 200 lbs his freshman year.
Wesley Walker was solid.

Then of course there's Luttrell who could suprise everybody.

Smith was a huge loss, but our cupboard is not bare of young talent.

I’m not a fan of Burrell by any means but we will be much deeper at corner next season especially if we add through the portal. My point was that I don’t see a true freshman making an impact at safety with what we have at the position.

Let’s not act like Willie isn’t going to trot McCollough out there as a starter next year too.

It's not gonna destroy the team, but it's still a big loss, just days from the ESP. If he had decommitted sooner, we'd have a better chance of landing another HS kid, but as is, we'll probably have to go portal. The secondary has absolutely been our weakest unit this year. We need more talent. This kid was supposed to be part of that. The team will survive, but let's not pretend losing a touted recruit doesn't suck.

I doubt this was a total shock to the staff. They probably knew with Auburn being an absolute dumpster fire that a coaching change was inevitable and he was always a flight risk.
