Al Washington (Potential DC)

I'd take Rodgers over Washington any day. VFL, has experience calling plays, just won a super bowl. That's got to be an easy sell to recruits.

Why would he come here? He's in one of the best career situations in his life. This isn't a dream job for anyone of note right now.
You reach that mountain top and you need to decide if you just want to climb it again. He’s an alum...maybe it’s more interesting to him?

That's a possibility, but the stress that this job will come with now, might not be worth it to someone that has worked through the ranks and is in a comfortable position now.

Stress is mostly self-inflicted. If you're passionate about what you do, the stress is going to be there regardless.

This job will have added stress that you won't have at 98% of other programs or organizations right now. Dealing with the stress here is only self inflicted if you decide to take the job. That's part of the problem in no one wanting to come here.

Really telling the state of our football program that this deal isn’t done yet. Under normal circumstances a pay raise/ promotion/ better conference would be a no brainer for any man.

This is what happens when you fire coaches for cause and cancel their contracts for doing what everyone does that wants to win. So now when you offer a coach even a million dollar pay raise. Your really not offering them a raise. Your offering them the possibility of a raise. That Tennessee could cancel and want to fight you over full payment. I do not blame any coach for not trusting a Tennessee contract right now.

Paid Chaney off, so not a really well developed narrative.

@butchna Yes some coaches were paid. However several were not. Coaches that have their careers to worry about have to look at the ones that weren’t paid. It’s the reality of the situation.

We have a history of paying up. How’d Arkansas land Briles and Odom whilst refusing to pay Bieliema? Meanwhile we had unrest with people fuming for not going after Butch’s buyout. Unless you’re piling Niedermeyer and Felton onto that “several”, you’re kinda talking out your butt.

@butchna I appreciate your fandom behind this. And the positive outlook that a fan has. Coaches aren’t fans. They can’t look at what happened before. They can only look at a situation as it is currently. That situation for Tennessee is several contract messes.
Why Tennessee missed on its first swings with a AD. Why Tennessee swung and missed with HC hire. And why Tennessee is struggling even overpaying for a DC.

So the “fan” thing trumps the Arkansas question? How’s they get away with it?

Did TN really miss on the 1st selection for AD? I didn't hear anything about that. Seemed like DW was at the top of the list.

I don't know that TN is "struggling" to find a DC. Al Washington seems to be their 1st choice, and from most accounts, he's still considering it.

Swain said some sitting P5 AD’s told us no first but White wasn’t far down the list.

The contract was honored. Pruitt voided his buyout and so too did some of those on his staff.

While there is a line that just about everyone crosses to get talent, Pruitt and his closest company were caught playing with fire in the public square. When coaches outside your operation know your business and are out in public saying they aren't surprised you are gone, then we ourselves should not assume the fault lies with Tennessee. Pruitt and his clumsy management practices put Tennessee in a position where they are in now and therefore the best he and certain members of his staff can hope for is a partial payoff on their buyouts through settlement in a legal fashion.

We aren't in a bad way because of what Tennessee did here. We're in bad shape because we hired an ignorant clown who had been sheltered from his own stupidity throughout his career for a leadership role that was well beyond his ability.

I don't even know how you would prioritize or rank ADs.

I’m sure there was a list...and they went down it.
