-Matt RayTennessee wide receivers coach Kesley Pope is expected to work in South Alabama on Wednesday, including stopping by the school of five-star wide receiver Ryan Williams. The Vols are an undoubted long shot in this one, but they are continuing to swing at the elite pass-catcher.
I have no idea why our fan base is dead set on this Butch Jones mindset of rotating WRs every catch.I didn’t say we wouldn’t have taken them but you aren’t going to see us land more than 3 a year because everyone knows we don’t rotate receivers.
Agreed.I have no idea why our fan base is dead set on this Butch Jones mindset of rotating WRs every catch.
we rotate and throw to our WRs just as much as anyone else.
The Top 10 Passing Offenses completed passes to an average of 8.3 WRs this year.
Tennessee completed passes to 9 WRs this year. Above the average of the Top 10.
The Top 10 Passing Offenses completed at least 10 passes to 5.5 Wrs this year.
Tennessee completed at least 10 passes to 6 WRs this year. Above the average of the Top 10.
and we did that with 30 fewer completed passes than the LOWEST total completed passes in the Top 10, and averaging 66 fewer completed passes than the rest of the Top 10.
the ONLY "problem" with our offense is that we don't throw it as much as people seem to think we do.
Plus if we sub out a receiver the refs will hold us up until the other team has a chance to sub.I have no idea why our fan base is dead set on this Butch Jones mindset of rotating WRs every catch.

Looking at raw stats you are correct. But we do not sub out WRs in the normal course of the game. Outside of injuries, unless its a blowout we rarely see more than 4WRs the first 3 quarters. We alternate Rbs and TE's regularly. Hell you see more rotation at oline than WR. I honestly think its been more of a talent issue than the plan. They have proven if we have a guy thats good enough hes gonna find a way on the field ala squirrel last year and Thornton this year. I have a feeling next season we rotate more especially if matthews is who we think he is.I have no idea why our fan base is dead set on this Butch Jones mindset of rotating WRs every catch.

I don’t think you understand the offense fully but that’s okay…Looking at raw stats you are correct. But we do not sub out WRs in the normal course of the game. In spite of the fact that we haven’t done so before, I can see this start to happen this year. The nature of the game has changed with the portal. If guys are capable, they need to play or they’ll transfer. With Bru, Squirrel, Brazzell, Thornton, Nimrod, and Webb all being guys who have played a lot of college football…and Matthews/Staley both being super talented freshmen, we have a lot of guys who expect to play and, more importantly, are highly capable. That hasn’t been the case before. In the middle of a drive I agree. But I do think we might platoon more when we have better depth.
It also really just depends on what the defense is showing from game to game.In spite of the fact that we haven’t done so before, I can see this start to happen this year. I don’t think Heupel likes scripted drives or at least I don’t get that impression from his play calling? Am I off on that thinking? Maybe the first series is scripted?
You’re right I can’t tell that’s why I formed it into a question, I am not 100% that he scripts some of his drives
I am guessing with Nico’s game, our game plans will include more deep stuff like under HH to stretch the field and IF we have more talent we can run some in when tempo is broken and fresh if good is better. Our 1st line quality guys on the outside vs gassed DB’s or 2nd string. In spite of the fact that we haven’t done so before, I can see this start to happen this year.
