'24 AL WR Ryan Williams

They wanted to bring in 4 high school WRs this year if they had landed Wingo and Jefferson.
I didn’t say we wouldn’t have taken them but you aren’t going to see us land more than 3 a year because everyone knows we don’t rotate receivers.

I have no idea why our fan base is dead set on this Butch Jones mindset of rotating WRs every catch.

we rotate and throw to our WRs just as much as anyone else.

The Top 10 Passing Offenses completed passes to an average of 8.3 WRs this year.
Tennessee completed passes to 9 WRs this year. Above the average of the Top 10.

The Top 10 Passing Offenses completed at least 10 passes to 5.5 Wrs this year.
Tennessee completed at least 10 passes to 6 WRs this year. Above the average of the Top 10.

and we did that with 30 fewer completed passes than the LOWEST total completed passes in the Top 10, and averaging 66 fewer completed passes than the rest of the Top 10.

the ONLY "problem" with our offense is that we don't throw it as much as people seem to think we do.

Plus if we sub out a receiver the refs will hold us up until the other team has a chance to sub.

Looking at raw stats you are correct. But we do not sub out WRs in the normal course of the game. Outside of injuries, unless its a blowout we rarely see more than 4WRs the first 3 quarters. We alternate Rbs and TE's regularly. Hell you see more rotation at oline than WR. I honestly think its been more of a talent issue than the plan. They have proven if we have a guy thats good enough hes gonna find a way on the field ala squirrel last year and Thornton this year. I have a feeling next season we rotate more especially if matthews is who we think he is.

I don’t think you understand the offense fully but that’s okay…

In the middle of a drive I agree. But I do think we might platoon more when we have better depth.
In spite of the fact that we haven’t done so before, I can see this start to happen this year. The nature of the game has changed with the portal. If guys are capable, they need to play or they’ll transfer. With Bru, Squirrel, Brazzell, Thornton, Nimrod, and Webb all being guys who have played a lot of college football…and Matthews/Staley both being super talented freshmen, we have a lot of guys who expect to play and, more importantly, are highly capable. That hasn’t been the case before.

It also really just depends on what the defense is showing from game to game.

On a unrelated note I don’t think Heupel likes scripted drives or at least I don’t get that impression from his play calling? Am I off on that thinking? Maybe the first series is scripted?

What exactly about his play calling would give you an impression that it is or is not scripted? I don’t understand how you think you can tell that?

You’re right I can’t tell that’s why I formed it into a question, I am not 100% that he scripts some of his drives

The only time I can ever tell that a play caller is scripting plays from watching their game is if their opening drive has a lot of formations, shifts, and motions.

If you’re watching someone using something similar to a multiple west coast scheme, those guys will often throw a lot of formations at you in their first 10-20 plays. This is because they have someone up top (I’ve been this guy before) diagramming how you play each of their formations, shifts, and motions. That way they know what plays to come back to on later drives.

But our offense isn’t very formation, shift, or motion heavy because all those things slow you down. If players are lining up in the same basic location every time and not moving pre-snap, you can go faster.

But to answer the question, yes, I believe Heupel does script plays. I want to say VQ mentioned that in 2022 but I could be wrong.

I am guessing with Nico’s game, our game plans will include more deep stuff like under HH to stretch the field and IF we have more talent we can run some in when tempo is broken and fresh if good is better. Our 1st line quality guys on the outside vs gassed DB’s or 2nd string.

Dillon Alfred is also at Saraland fwiw
Ahh, now this makes more sense for us right now --- go after the 3* high school guy with potential instead of the elite proven WR that could step in and immediately be a game changer.... :p Hopefully Pope runs into Williams in the hallway...
