Tennessee defensive line coach
Rodney Garner traveled to New York on Sunday night to visit with Verse coming off his official visit to Syracuse.
"They explained a lot to me — the defensive scheme, everything like that, and how they play, how they could use my skill set and maximize all the potential and help me reach my potential," Verse said of his meeting with Garner. "We talked about a couple different things — the people they have coming back, who they have leaving and things like that."
Verse announced Monday night in a post on his Twitter account that he received a scholarship offer from the Vols following his visit with Garner. Verse said he's intrigued by his opportunity at Tennessee.
"Tennessee is never a team you really talk down on," he said. "It's always a great team. The coaching staff, no matter who it is, they're always great coaches. The opportunity, seeing about it this week, being able to make me a better pass rusher, a better run-stopper, a better player overall."
Verse said he "was never heavily recruited" coming out of Central Columbia High School in Bloomsburg, Pa. His experience this time around is noticeably different, with several major programs battling for him.
"Albany took a chance on me, and I've been so grateful for that opportunity to be able to play Division I football at any level," he said. "But it did come to a spot where I had to leave to help maximize my potential and everything like that, and the coaches understood. ...
"It's kind of humbling having that first-time-around experience where I wasn't heavily recruited, so I know how it feels. And now colleges are flying out here, want to come talk to me, want to sit down with me, and I'm taking all these officials that I didn't get a chance to take the first time."
