BS. Mental health professionals (and medical professionals) should be the ones working with the mentally disturbed and drug users instead of police. This, to me, frees up police to be on the streets and have the time to deal with real criminals. Social workers and therapists are highly trained in these matters. I am sure if a situation is violent in nature, police will come in as a backup.

Seriously? I've seen "calm" people flip in seconds because of drugs. This will end bad for a few, just wait.

So you let me check and see if i got your take on this.

- Psych/Intoxicated/Suicidal/Drug patients should be handled by social workers responding only

- EMS refuses to respond until the scene is safe, so the social worker will be there alone with said person or person(s) unarmed

- If violence occurs, if a weapon is drawn by person, if they run off crazy into the interstate traffic, if they refused to go to the hospital, then the social worker will then step back and hope to have time to call for police to respond to make the scene safe, which they would have done anyway before, only now there is a super delay in police response and the social worker has to just hope for the best?

you do realize that 90% of these type calls require police to handcuff, search or control the patient right?

The decision came as Black Lives Matter advocates to defund police departments in the wake of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in police custody after Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes on May 25.

Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller announced that the city would create a “first-of-its-kind” cabinet-level department that would respond to calls on inebriation, homelessness, addiction and mental health.

Some poor little girl fresh out of college who has her degree and is not only a Social Worker but is a Social Justice Warrior who believes the worlds problems can be solved by talking things out. She gets called to the scene of some "PO" strung out on something or is so angry they just beat her to inch of her life or worse rapes or kills her.

Then this dumb idea will have an unfortunate a sad ending.

I feel like most of the drummed up 'solutions' fail to account for the fact you need actual people to do the job.

Dude didn't see that coming.....? Once again, the vast vast majority of this country are ill prepared to be able to handle self defense, let alone the ability to read situations and people and body movement, placement, and language.

And, again, anytime you open your mouth today, you better realize the danger that exists, but, the vast majority are that Americanized they truly believe violence isn't one second away, let alone a life and death situation.

Should have, I saw it 2 seconds into the video........gotta be aware, or the proverbial you, might just get hit in the head with a skateboard.....

And yes, maybe a punk, but, he walked away, so, in terms of real intelligence, and larger picture life and natural law, he was the one who gets to take another breath and see another day. There is no right, or wrong, or anything other than being cognizant enough to survive, or naive, gullible, scared, and/or unaware or just not mean enough to survive.

Americans are so far removed from the natural laws of life on this planet because we have had it so good for so long, and most importantly, because we truly believe in trying to be a society that is decent and free from real strife and struggle. We have money so we don't kill one another for meat. We have laws so we can try and live free from the daily possibility that death is awaiting at every corner, by virtue of faith in our systems and citizens. All an illusion that we keep going based on the concept that we all are tying to not be animals. Humans are just that.

The gazelle eaten alive by the lions or crocs doesn't care about intent, or why or how or anything other than realizing that it is slowly and painfully dying. Nothing else matters at that point except there is a winner, and loser in the game of life, and no morals, ethics, values, or beliefs can elevate man away from the simple fact that life is harsh and the strong will survive, no matter how sad or bad or unthinkable or acceptable.

I hope dude female, or one of her male family or friends, hunts down that pos, but, they won't. Maybe they will. Maybe if more were not like him her and did just that, we wouldn't witness a thug like this acting like he does. Maybe if thug knew I'd not only come calling for his life, but, like Keyser Soze, those of people who he cared about, and again, there is no right, wrong, or anything other than pure animalistic survival and self preservation, maybe he wouldn't act and be what he is.

I guess...... point is people need to really change their Americanized lazy fat arse freedom loving easy lifestyles and perceptions, and remember, life isn't like this, and yet, we try to be better, and sometimes, there is no such thing as better, just alive to see another day.

Although, the goal is to be what we hope, but, as this thug shows, reality sometimes doesn't allow for the good and decency we wish for or want. We strive to be, and should continue to do that, but, also, be aware sometimes a wolf is just a wolf amongst sheep.

Being able to separate one's survival from one's hopeful ideals is as innate as anything else in our DNA, we chose to try and live with and by ideals in disregard to the reality to which survival cares not a thing about, a man, a human issue. Man's ego thinking, thinking it is somehow above the natural laws and world.

And, we should all hope that she is and was this way. But, never forget the real existing dangers, and always assume worst case and prepare, and move forward from there.

I'm with you DynaLo, I just think people need to be more aware of the things and people lurking that always are around, and to be better prepared to be the animal needed, versus the human we want and should be.

Trying to be civil with the uncivil is asking for trouble.

Most people have no clue about how many fights happen in a hospital or on the streets with EMS between healthcare workers and patients (psych, drugs, altered mental status, dementia, hell regular patients)

It's allot.

I am sure you have to deal with these "highly trained" professionals daily.

We have 1 for 28 pts. Their training is 8 years. They specialize in hooking up People with resources to help and directing overall care with a team. They do not deal with domestic violence directly, etoh people directly, drug induced people directly, they are still seen on the streets as gov people. It won't take long before this asinine solution produces the first dead social worker.
