Alcoa, former Riverdale Coach Gary Rankin 'best in state'.

I had a few friends in hs that were told they wouldn't have to pay the tuition if they played for maryville. It wasn't just football.

Entirely untrue. If you live out of zone, doesnt matter if you play sports or not, you MUST pay tuition. One of the best RBs in Maryville history lived in the City of Alcoa and paid his tuition....That is a fact!

Are you talking about Carl Stewart? It should also be noted his mom was a teacher in the Maryville system.

How bout I one up it and you show me where in the TSSAA rule book it shows Alcoa is doing anything against the rules? That's exactly what I thought. Alcoa has had Open Zone rules all the time, even when they had bad teams. Nice try though, also there are quite a few other schools that have them as well. Including teams that have lost to Alcoa in State Championship games. Do more research. :good!:

I don't have to research. While at Riverdale, Rankin had lots of kids zoned to other schools. One was using the address of an Asst. Coach.

1) No idea. I didnt selectively give a decade to make my claim. Again, I bet Alcoa has put more in D1 schools than Maryville in history of the two programs.

2) Honestly, I thought Quarles had taken over by then. You're right. He was still an assistant at that point.

3) Yep, 'cept the era from 1978 to 2009 was a long 20 years when it felt like an anomaly if we'd even make the playoffs. During that time, was when i roamed the halls of the maryville school system. Not until I left, did become a state power.

4) Where were they before Quarles took over?

D1 Players (that actually got a scholarship and made the team)

Alcoa
Shannon Mitchell
Billy Williams
Randall Cobb
Tyler Robinson
Kyrus Lanxter
Brandon Warren
Rae Sykes

Maryville
Carl Stewart
Aaron Douglas
Ryan Maples
Tyler Maples
Cade Thompson
Nick Black
Chuck Prugh? (I think he earned a scholarship at UT after walking on from Carson Newman)
Toki McCray

I want to say Maryville had 2 others back in the 70s maybe that made it. Dont know the names off the top of my head though. Alcoa has had a few others that could have gone D1 (Albert Davis and Dustin Lindsey) but neither could qualify academically.

Don't forget Danny Spradlin of Maryville who played for UT and in the NFL (Dallas Cowboys).

Also, there was Todd Upton and Willie Lundy both All-Americans from Alcoa.

Upton (class of '81) played for UT on scholarship, but tore up his knee during a game in his sophmore (or junior?) year and was never the same again.

Lundy (class of '85) was voted Mr.Football the first year Tennessee awarded the title. Lundy stared at Carson-Newman back when they were winning NAIA national titles.

I believe Alcoa's Albert Davis Sr. (HS All-American) was the first African American to sign scholarship papers to play football at UT (although I may be wrong). As I recall he later transfered from UT (or didn't have the grades) and eventual played in the NFL.

Tim George and Dave Davis both played for Alcoa in the 60's. Davis stared as a WR for Tennessee State and then spent four years in the NFL. George played at C-N before being drafted by Cincinnati in the 3rd round.

And don't forget that Lynn Swann was born in Alcoa before he moved to California, stared at USC, and became a Hall of Famer with the Steelers.

She was a 1st grade teacher at Sam Houston Elementary. My sister had her years and years ago as a teacher.

Even if your parent teaches in Maryville, you still have to pay tuition. It is half price but you still have to pay. I did it until I moved in the city.

I would like to see how Quarles would do at the college level, or at a school in a better hs football state.

Spradlin was the one I was thinking of from the 70s. I dont know how I forgot about Upton :fool:

The rest however werent D1 scholarship athletes that had any playin time which is what we were discussing. Big Al did sign papers but never played a down at UT.

I'm no expert on football at any level, but I do believe that it might be a good idea to wait until Rankin has coached somewhere that isn't laden with talent until we annoint him 'the best in the state.' But imo, Quarles>Rankin.

the same can be said about quarles in that very few school systems in america, let alone tn, have midget, peewee, grasscutter, and middle school programs like maryville does. i think he's a great coach, but i do not think he'd be as successful as he is if he coached somewhere that didn't have a feeder program like theirs.

I don't dispute that Maryville is fortunate to have such a well-run youth football program, but between Rankin and Quarles, Quarles is the better coach.

Rankin only beating Quarles twice with the talent he has at Alcoa is the only piece of evidence I need to see that Quarles is 1A and Rankin is 1B. Both are great coaches, but I believe a Quarles coached Alcoa team beats a Quarles coached Maryville team every time, therefore, if Rankin is as good as Quarles then he would be undefeated against Maryville.

i thought Maryville is a couple classifications higher? of course they should win that game

It is classified by the size of your school, not the talent level of the team. Granted, the larger student pool can give you a better selection of players, but that is not the case with Alcoa. They have the studs every year to hang with or beat 98% of the 6A schools in Tennessee.

Rumor in Blount County has Rankin retiring from Tennessee Public Education (Alcoa) and taking the Catholic job (Private) to pull in his retirement benefits plus a salary at Catholic. The Catholic coach is heading to Fulton. Just a rumor floating around Bount.

Rankin has stated, publicly, that he WILL be at Alcoa in 2011 and has no plans on leaving. However, I do feel he will be there next year but once his son graduates, even though he has an underclassman daughter, I feel his stay there will be very questionable.

I don't get why he doesn't try it at the college level now. He has nothing else to prove as a high school coach.

I have a theory about Rankin... When he was at Riverdale, I think he knew someone at the Nissan plant that employed parents of kids he was recruiting. If that's true, it's not too hard to see how he's pulling in talent at Alcoa every year with a huge aluminum plant. My thinking is that once Rankin left Riverdale, it opened the door for Shadowens to use the same principle at Smyrna (2 state titles), and now Blackman - both of which are a mere 10 minutes from the Nissan plant. Btw, I used to date a girl that played soccer for Riverdale. It was during the Rankin years, and I would occasionally go watch the football team practice. I used to laugh when I saw the players get in their cars. The only other place I've seen that many different county license plates is on Interstate 40. Rankin may not be the best coach, but he is the best recruiter in TN HS football.

he does not use alcoa inc to pull talent. the black population that makes up a vast majority of alcoa's roster lives and grew up in the city, most even playing youth sports for alcoa growing up.

i'd surmise that most of the people who now work at alcoa don't live in alcoa anymore.

I played against riverdale in high school when Rankin was there. Lets just say it wasn't pretty. Of course that game was the CSS game of the week. That was '05 and they went on to win state that year so I didn't feel to bad getting crushed by the best team in the state.
