Alcoa, former Riverdale Coach Gary Rankin 'best in state'.

Curious to see what people think after the 42-24 win in 2012, and the 31-2 rolling Maryville just gave him. I think Rankin maybe the best of all time, but he might be falling off.

He has never been a better coach than Quarles. Alcoa has superior talent every single year they play Maryville, and usually get outplayed by a team that is run like a finely tuned engine. Quarles > Rankin end of discussion.

As an Alcoa honk, I agree with this 1M%...as painful as it may be.:hi:

I think Alcoa will win out in the regular season and play for the State Championship in Murfreesboro. Alcoa is damn good this season.

With the schedule that Rankin has assembled (not playing Fulton), you are really putting yourself out there.....:whistling:

I definitely agree that Quarles is better, but do you really think Alcoa has more talent? I could see at a position or two, but Maryville has incredible depth.

Found a cool site that shows recruits by school.
2005 Maryville 1, Alcoa 0
2006 Maryville 1, Alcoa 3
2007 Maryville 6, Alcoa 5
2008 Maryville 2, Alcoa 2
2009 Maryville 1, Alcoa 1
2010 Maryville 0, Alcoa 2
2011 Maryville 4, Alcoa 4
2012 Maryville 3, Alcoa 1

Total 18 to 18.

I was about to say that. I've only played against Maryville, and never Alcoa. But they seemed to have talent. I just wonder what Quarles does so different to make him such a dominant coach. I'd like to watch a Maryville practice.

I've been to several UT practices and saw Quarles there twice. I've never seen Maryville practice, but I'm sure he's incorporated a lot of what he learned from watching UT practice.

Thats the elite players from both schools. Maryville is a much more populated enrollment. So the other positions Maryville is deeper based off just sure numbers. You could swap coaches and results would be similar to current.

You give me GQ and Alcoa's athletes and I would take that against anyone in this state...Ensworth included.
Quarles gets more out of less talented kids than anyone, period.
The BIGGEST difference is that these kids have been running the same system with the same terminology since age 9. All he has to do is tweak what is coming to him by age 13.
Hell, the man has two freshmen starting at linebacker for him this year.

Do you think Maryville will win it all in 6A? And what type of defense does Quarles run?

They will cruise into the Semis where Oakland will be waiting, but those 7-AAA are snake bit when it comes to Murvil.
If they get Da'Haven in the finals again, they have more than enough firepower on offense to beat them. Murvil just can't turn the ball over 4 times like they did last year.

Trust me, I've seen every 7AAA team play this year, and none are as good as Siegel last year, or Riverdale the year before. If Maryville is anything like they were the past years, they will dominate Oakland.

I played Sam backer there from 2000 to 2003. We ran a base 4-3 (tackles in the 3 and 2) depending on the offensive strength side. Also some split 50 thrown in there.

So did you ever line up on the los? In the 50 too? And that's interesting. No true A gap player.

The only way Rankin Wins is having more Talent . I've watched Coach Quarles beat so many teams who were much more talented over and over again . CAK had a few athletes and Rankin couldn't adjust or come up with anything new . Coach Quarles has pulled out MIRACLES several times .

It is classified by the size of your school, not the talent level of the team. Granted, the larger student pool can give you a better selection of players, but that is not the case with Alcoa. They have the studs every year to hang with or beat 98% of the 6A schools in Tennessee.

That is an utterly absurd statement.

4 Championships at Riverdale and 4 at Alcoa now. That pretty much solidifies his "king of the hill' status as best football coach in high school.
Hats off the Maryville. I had heard this Memphis team was a good one and apparently what I heard was correct.

ummm NO
