Alex Oriakhi to transfer...

Why is it that every time a program gets put on probation and players start to transfer, TN automatically becomes a potential destination? Just because we got Jackson to come here from USC doesn't mean every Jimmy and Joe player wants to come here.

If he only has 1 year thanks to Ole Miss abusing 1 year left for players. Mike Slive added the rule players must have at leadt 2 years eligibility to join a SEC school. We got John Fields. But now we wouldnt have.

Stupid rule IMO. If players are allowed to be 1 and done, then they should also be allowed to do this

He has the potential to be a beast in the paint. Can he be released to another BE school or is that out of the question? I know the rules for a typical transfer but Uconns situation isn't typical.

Make no mistake about it I didnt say I disagree or agree with it. I believe it was handed down with good intentions though. For instance Us getting John Fields did the kid a favor gave him a shot at getting Masters at another school and he got 5th year to play basketball. However Ole Miss took a kid that was dismissed from school for issues Jeremiah Masoli. Slive I think just doesn't want 2 things happening more trouble makers coming in being cancers that have been booted elsewhere than the problem kids this conference already deals with. The other thing is to make sure coaches don't get themselves into recruiting violations by sneakily trying to contact kids while they are still attending another school if they have another year of eligibility but have their degree. I think the grad student rule should still be ok but I am not the commish.

well if that is true then this is a mute point

that being said if we could get a player of this caliber you would do it 100% of the time - you could easily have him Stokes and Maymon on the same front line - we are not in the position to be turning away top talent

I definitely would take a kid like that. I just think the new rule tells us we can't. See my previous post to this one.

Yemi could get a much needed redshirt and learn the game more so than he does now. Better said he could get more comfortable. However, don't count us out totally, we played them tough this year, and had a very good atmosphere. From that experience, he could see UT as a candidate. Just depends on how hard cuanzo can sell next season. Only downside is that he said he didn't want to feel like a coaches' slave, and we all know how much CCM demands of every single player.

Most trouble-makers don't graduate, let alone look for another school to finish their eligibility while pursuing a graduate degree. It's retarded to makes rules based on a single exception to the case.

If that were really the impetus behind the rule, he would just say the SEC can't accept transfers who were dismissed from their previous school/athletic program.

I agree with you I. And you could be right Slive and the presidents may have another reason they did not disclose. But the 2 were reported to media.

I don't think it would make sense for him to come here, he would have to battle Maymon and Stokes for a starting spot. He won't go anywhere that he isn't the clear cut starter

I think DSV has it right that it cant happen anyway - but this contention that he wouldnt start is ridiculous - he started for a team that won the national title and would likely have been in contention for the big east again this year w/o calhoun's health problems - he is as talented as any player on our roster not named Stokes

here is a crack of how it could be done since some in this thread can't see it

Golden
Mcbee
Stokes
Maymon
Oriakhi

mcrae first guy off bench - see its easy to incorporate really good players - its the crappy ones where its more difficult

And if Anthony Davis wante to come here we'd just have

Golden
Davis
Stokes
Oriakhi
Maymon

????????

Not the way it works. Sorry but oriakhi wouldn't start here. If he did that's mean stokes was coming off the bench, those 3 will not all start together.

Are you implying Stokes as a 3? That would be much more suited to Maymon in terms of size, athleticism and skill set. Secondly, Alex Oriakhi averaged 6.8 ppg and 4.8 rpg, hardly wowing stats on a team that needed to rely more heavily on him with Kemba gone

I think you greatly over value him, our post players average better stats and we don't even bother to feed the post most games

Maymon or Stokes could play more 3 and inside outside - they do this anyway in the offense as they don't just sit in the post

teams with 3 guards have won big and teams with 3 bigs have won big - you don't always have to have a traditional 1-2-3-4-5 to win - especially with versatile guys you just want to get your best 5 on the floor - you need some ability to stretch the D (mcbee), some ability to handle the ball, some ability to rebound - how you get there can be done in a variety of ways

Right now maymon stokes and oriakhi have not shown the ability to consistently shoot outside of 10 feet. And only maymon has shown the ability to guard a 3 for limited possessions.

Unless maymon becomes quicker and improve his shot tremendously he will not play the 3. Not only that but his biggest strength is his quickness verse opposing 5's to take them off the dribble IMO. That's totally negated when you moe him to the 3.

All this is pointless anyways because oriakhi couldn't come here even if he wanted. Hypothetically though, no we would not start those 3 bigs. If that were the case you'd have seen hall maymon and stokes all starting at some poInt this year.

I think you're wrong, you think I'm wrong - it won't happen anyway so moving on seems most appropriate

If we are going land of giants go all out. Manute Bol, Shawn Bradley, Yao Ming, Ralph Sampson, Rik Smits. Average starting height 7'5" just a tad intimidation factor there.
