All football Assistants get an extension except Martinez

Good. I’ve said a few times in other threads bashing Tim Banks that, even though I feel some of our secondary woes were due to some suspect playcalling defensively, I’m much more wary of the Martinez experiment. He’s a fair recruiter and has has been let go on vireveru stop he’s made. I’m done with him. Show up or get out time this season IMO.

I hope he feels like he really needs to improve the secondary.

He is only responsible for the cornerbacks. Tim Banks coaches the safeties and Banks also determines the schemes.

Everyone has seen the article in the last week or so about Heupel has never fired an assistant coach and loves to promote from within his staff? So Willie will have to leave on his own and likely will be replaced by someone on staff.

Just a reminder of the obvious but easily forgotten:

There are many other possible reasons for this besides lack of confidence in Martinez. Martinez might have even requested it this way.

First of all, other than 9 years at Georgia, his pattern has been about 4 years or less with any one school or head coach. Despite the squawk from some fans, that pattern has not been for lack of success developing players or improving pass defenses. (check that link if you believe Martinez is a subpar secondary coach) So there's something there to the way he rolls. I think it's safe to figure that he enjoys the challenge, as long as he can work with excellent athletes.

He also has three children, so at his age it's likely he and his wife are or will soon be grandparents. Others here can attest to how that changes a person's goals in life--but especially when one's career has put his family through so many location changes. He and his wife could be looking to relocate closer to grandkids. Or, they might be looking to relocate closer to aging parents--or even retire from football to enter a second career in something other than coaching. People do, especially people who enjoy investing their lives in other people.

[editing this, because I forgot about the $75K raise] It's even possible that Martinez forewent the raise this year, to free up money so Heupel could keep some promising young coaching talent in-the-fold. We've seen how Heupel prefers to promote from within when he encounters a coaching vacancy.

As I said, I'm only offering this as a reminder of things we don't know. Sometimes we jump on these theories like a coonhound on an unfamiliar scent trail. Curiosity leads to knowledge, but speculation more often misleads.

he got a 75K raise, just no extension on contract.

Because he did not get an extention, he would not have to fire him after next season and could still hire a new CB/DB coach.

I think this is the right approach. I know it's fashionable to criticize Martinez and I've had my concerns too. But we also have to remember that the defensive backs, particularly the Corners, were decimated with injuries last offseason. There was very little if any opportunity for development between seasons. This led to having guys who are true Safety types playing CB along with undeveloped CBs. I've never seen a position room hit so hard with injuries/surgeries in an offseason as that one was.

It's entirely possible that, with a healthy offseason and the ability to develop, we see drastic improvement in the DBs. It's also possible that what we saw is close to the result we would have had if they'd all been healthy last offseason.

Point is, we really don't know. He didn't earn an extension. But there were exigent circumstances that may have prevented that. Heupel is basically taking a wait and see approach. This tells me if the secondary doesn't improve significantly this coming season, a change will be made...but also that Heupel thinks it's reasonable to expect that improvement (otherwise, he'd have made the change now).

Players like Martinez. Maybe loyalty will motivate them to better off-season preparation and more focused effort in spring practice.

Maybe they like him because he lets them slide on poor technique? Because the corners displayed a lot of it last year, and plenty of trash talking that didn't get backed up.

I highly, highly doubt it.

Everyone loves to blame the coaches, but lack of talent is the most obvious problem. People even criticized Derick Ansley when he was here but he became an NFL Defensive Coordinator a couple days ago... which means he probably doesn't suck. Every 4-star player in our secondary besides Jaylen McCollough is here because they weren't good enough to crack the 2-deep at their previous school so they transferred. And no offense to Jaylen McCollough, he's a VFL and I'm a big fan of his, but I don't see NFL talent when I watch him play... I see a lot of heart and competitive spirit, which is why I'm a big fan... but he's not a great athlete, IMO.
