All football Assistants get an extension except Martinez

Is Banks teaching the CBs to run straight into the WR without turning to find the ball?

He is responsible overall for the defense. If coaches are teaching players something, it is with his blessing. If he disagrees with what they are doing he has the authority to change it. Its really simple concept.

From watching many, many practices over the years (not this staff) I've observed head coaches and coordinators teaching all positions on the practice field. They typically move around from position group to position group. I would be absolutely floored if position coaches are teaching anything (either offense or defense) that a coordinator or head coach disagrees with. If that is happening, there is much bigger issues than the cornerbacks coach.

Right. So there are over 100 D1 schools that have more DB talent than we do? Come off of that BS. This boils down to coaching plain and simple. Martinez hasn’t developed jack and neither has Banks. A tenet of a good coach is the ability to take the players you have and develop them. Martinez and Banks haven’t done that.

I've not watched over 100 other D1 schools so I can't answer your question nor believe anyone can.

Just a reminder of the obvious but easily forgotten:

There are many other possible reasons for this besides lack of confidence in Martinez. Martinez might have even requested it this way.

First of all, other than 9 years at Georgia, his pattern has been about 4 years or less with any one school or head coach. Despite the squawk from some fans, that pattern has not been for lack of success developing players or improving pass defenses. (check that link if you believe Martinez is a subpar secondary coach) So there's something there to the way he rolls. I think it's safe to figure that he enjoys the challenge, as long as he can work with excellent athletes.

He also has three children, so at his age it's likely he and his wife are or will soon be grandparents. Others here can attest to how that changes a person's goals in life--but especially when one's career has put his family through so many location changes. He and his wife could be looking to relocate closer to grandkids. Or, they might be looking to relocate closer to aging parents--or even retire from football to enter a second career in something other than coaching. People do, especially people who enjoy investing their lives in other people.

[editing this, because I forgot about the $75K raise] It's even possible that Martinez forewent the raise this year, to free up money so Heupel could keep some promising young coaching talent in-the-fold. We've seen how Heupel prefers to promote from within when he encounters a coaching vacancy.

As I said, I'm only offering this as a reminder of things we don't know. Sometimes we jump on these theories like a coonhound on an unfamiliar scent trail. Curiosity leads to knowledge, but speculation more often misleads.

But he’s no good, right? 😂😂😂

I think that’s just shrewd comp mgmt by the AD and Heupel. Top performers get the carrot. Middle guys get a reward. Bottom 10% gets the stick and gets another chance to turn it around. Well thought out bell curve of comp.
The stick? Martinez did get a raise but no extension. That’s the kind of stick I wish my employer would ise

Well consider what our pass defense is ranked. And then tell me that ALL those teams ahead of us have recruited better talent at DB. There is simply no way that’s possible.

Are you subtracting those who compete at mid-major level schedules?

Let's flip the script. Are you telling me that there WERE high level contributors at CB at UT that would start at the higher rated secondaries in P5 conferences? The most relevant group for comparison. List those you think would have performed at a quality level under other coaches at SEC schools. Got to believe that is the analysis that CJH and our DC perform daily. Also the justification for the quantity of incoming DB's in this class.

tell me who all they played versus who Tennessee played. statistical rankings can reflect who you played against not necessarily how good or bad you are in a category.

Air Force, Army and UMass are 3 of the top 10. Doesn't mean they have better players than everyone else.

Martinez has a history of developing players, sending many to the NFL.
