Players like Martinez. Maybe loyalty will motivate them to better off-season preparation and more focused effort in spring practice.
When Heup's staff was announced, Martinez was the only guy I wasn't thrilled about.

I don't think he's been good anywhere he's coached, including his previous stop here. Guys he coaches don't learn how to make plays/adjustments on the ball.

Can we Martinez another 25k to have Hadden shut up and make plays? It was embarrassing to watch him talk smack and then get caught on!

Gbo!

Good. I’ve said a few times in other threads bashing Tim Banks that, even though I feel some of our secondary woes were due to some suspect playcalling defensively, I’m much more wary of the Martinez experiment. He’s a fair recruiter and has has been let go on vireveru stop he’s made. I’m done with him. Show up or get out time this season IMO.

The biggest problem was 0 talent in the secondary. I bring this up in every thread, because it's worth repeating. Only Vandy had less 4/5* DBs on their roster than we did last season in the SEC.

Because he did not get an extention, he would not have to fire him after next season and could still hire a new CB/DB coach.

JMO but leaving Banks on staff and letting Martinez leaves does little to solve the issues back there.

Most of Tennessee's DBs are overrated. Most if not all should be 3 stars, not 4 stars

Maybe/Maybe not but the defensive coordinator is going to get a lot more leeway than a CB coach. Can't be a coincidence he was the only coach not to het an extension.

Banks doesn't get a lot of leeway for his coaching of the safeties and his defensive schemes. Offense may not be as explosive in 23 so Banks better tighten the defense up, a lot. Also, why would he not fix Martinez problems? He is the DC

They have a contract with extension for him but he has to get it from Spencer Ratller to earn it

I am sure the lack of extension is exactly how he is addressing it. Martinez is in a improve it or hit the road year

Do you think Martinez has been aligning cornerbacks differently than Banks wants them? If he has, he should have been fired after game 1 the first year.

I can't imagine a position coach not executing his coaching exactly as his boss wants or he would be on the road.

To take 2 years to try and change someone and then use contract as the leverage doesn't seem very smart to me..

Why would that be true? Just the opposite should be true. Responsibility starts at the top.

If I read correctly, Banks' raise is part of his contract. His contract runs through 2025 so an extension may not be due... but he didn't get one either based on how that reads.

Had to check and make sure you didn't quote me because I feel EXACTLY the same way

I highly, highly doubt it.

Everyone loves to blame the coaches, but lack of talent is the most obvious problem. People even criticized Derick Ansley when he was here but he became an NFL Defensive Coordinator a couple days ago... which means he probably doesn't suck. Every 4-star player in our secondary besides Jaylen McCollough is here because they weren't good enough to crack the 2-deep at their previous school so they transferred. And no offense to Jaylen McCollough, he's a VFL and I'm a big fan of his, but I don't see NFL talent when I watch him play... I see a lot of heart and competitive spirit, which is why I'm a big fan... but he's not a great athlete, IMO.

Sorry not buying the talent issue excuse. So you mean to tell me that at the University of TN, there are more than 100 D1 schools that have better DB talent. That’s a crock of BS and you know it. These guys aren’t being coached up or developed. Banks schemes are bad SBs he isn’t a good coach either.

I was surprised when I read his resume and the accomplishments of his players and defenses. I'm curious if you might have the same reaction:

Willie Martinez - Football Coach - University of Tennessee Athletics

Sometimes perception is not reality. LOL--especially for us bleed-orange fans!

No, that’s not what I’m saying at all.

Are you judging our defense based on their points per game, total yardage, or similar ranking? I don’t judge based on those criteria because of how frequently our offense puts them on the field. I think points per drive is a much more appropriate metric for Heupel’s system but honestly I don’t know where we rank there… my guess would be somewhere between 30-50.

As far as using the extensions or lack of as an indicator of CJH's OWN evaluation. How many of those receiving extensions had contracts through next season? Why a raise if he needed a you are on the clock message? I am going to join the less vocal more cerebral group of fans that trust Coach to evaluate the root cause of obvious problems in the past and the resolution path. Has there been ANY indication that he or the DC has directed additional attention to that group from other staffers or outside resources? Who targeted and committed schollies to this years DB additions? Did CJH tell these additions who would be coaching them upon arrival or avoid the subject? Lot's of unaddressed intelligent questions still out there. Including contractual restrictions on favored alternatives if a change is under serious consideration. Doubt he takes the this is Tennessee and somebody BETTER is always ready to jump on board approach.

Right. So there are over 100 D1 schools that have more DB talent than we do? Come off of that BS. This boils down to coaching plain and simple. Martinez hasn’t developed jack and neither has Banks. A tenet of a good coach is the ability to take the players you have and develop them. Martinez and Banks haven’t done that.

Is Banks teaching the CBs to run straight into the WR without turning to find the ball?
