All you “great regular season” basketball fans need to ask…

Do you realize how many people on here say they’re happy with TN basketball as long as they have a quality regular season and get to the NCAA tournament?
I think you’re twisting the words of many. Not wanting to risk losing the current success and being in position for a tournament run annually, for the unknown, isn’t the same as being “happy with a quality regular season and getting to the tournament.”

the Boston Bruins just how important it is.

Truth is regular season is nothing more than the avenue to get to postseason play in tournament/playoff sports.
So we can hope not to hear from you during the regular season since theirs no reason for you to watch or complain?

You mean to tell me you’ve not seen many posts with peoples saying in some form or fashion that a quality regular season and getting to the tournament is what they deem as success for TN basketbal? C’mon.

So, next year, I guess we can expect to not hear one cross word from you in the regular season if we somehow limp to a 20-13 record and just on the right side of the bubble, correct? I mean, if what we do in the postseason is the sole and ultimate determining factor of success.

Truth is, you've already given up on next year's team before it's started. Just like you had given up on last year's team in November because they lost to Colorado...you remember, that regular season game that didn't matter.

I have seen no more than a handful of posts like that, and maybe just a couple that state what you claim about being content with making the tournament. I don’t see every post made here. Even so, there are a lot of people here, you’re always going to have a few fringe opinions.

Easy fix for that. It’s called the Ignore button. Should have stuck him on that list after his goofy opinions last year but didn’t. I can see he’s not going to quit trolling so I’m about to fix that oversight.

Seems like the best option. He spouted his mouth off about talking to Bruins fans and ignored when one answered.

OP trying to compare Rick Barnes postseason struggles to, quite possibly, the biggest upset in the history of professional sports. Definitely the same thing. This is a very good, fair, and accurate comparison. Well done.

I’d say a coach being unable to get beyond a Sweet Sixteen with the money, resources, and facilities offered by Texas & TN for 15 seasons is about as big an upset. You?

No, because it's not a 7-gm series. Your failure to realize the many flaws in your argument is truly amazing.

I would argue that watching a good regular season college basketball team (one midweek night game, one weekend afternoon game, wins feel good, losses aren’t devastating) is one of the most enjoyable sports fan experiences currently available.

That’s because beyond wins getting you to the tournament they don’t matter a whole hell if a lot. Thanks for proving my point.

There have been No. 1 seeds losing to eight seeds in hockey, NBA, etc., before. Heck, look no further than Seattle over Colorado this year.

Everything doesn’t have to be win or go home, man. You can watch games because you enjoy the sport even when it’s not super high stakes. College basketball (and in fact, all sports) provides both and I like that.

If the post-season was the only thing that matters about sports, we might as well just start each season of each sport with one giant single-elimination tournament and just get right to it if literally nothing else matters. It’s insane how some people who claim to love sports seem to go out of their way to actively not enjoy large portions of it.

With football, the regular season used to be all that mattered. Conference championships were the prizes. Then there were popularity votes for the mythical national championship. After that, post season bowl games were played for ***** and giggles.

Even with conference realignments and expanded playoffs, the regular season is again trending toward what’s most important since the best players are opting out.

The volume of bowl games is ridiculous. One of my friends played for Wisconsin in late 80’s and early 90’s. He said the too 25-30 teams were rewarded with bowl games while everyone stayed home.

Liberty Bowl and Bluebonnet Bowl invitations were celebrated. Gator Bowls were huge. Orange Bowls were like national championships. Even Cotton Bowls were prestigious. Before the AP and UPI votes came after the bowl games, they were all just big parties for players and fans. The regular season is what mattered. And the media bias for the Big 10 and PAC 8/10/whatever was egregious.

I don’t recall the year(s) as I was just a kid, but Nebraska Vs. Miami was a good game. I think Osborne went for two and lost? I remember Pitt and Dan Marino playing in a bowl and Elway and Stanford. All the games were on New Year’s and it was a fun day filled with anticipation.

Did I say a word about firing Barnes—yes or no?
If you don’t want Barnes fired, why do you come on this board to incessantly whine about his postseason success? If I had this much of a problem with how our seasons always ends, I would want our coach fired yesterday. If you think things are so bad AND you don’t want the coach fired, you are worse than anyone who you would claim is fine with mediocrity. If you’re gonna come on here and say ridiculous sh*t, at least sack up and stand on it.
