When I added my son a few years ago, the agent was taken aback when I told her that I did not want her to tell me how much my insurance was about to increase. And that I’d just check online tomorrow after the change processed and I had a drink in my hand.

It's not much better when you start put on your own as a guy under 25. Even with a degree and no history of claims.

I was paying more for insurance than I was on my car, with a clean record.

230 car payment. 350 car insurance payments.

It's now around 100 a month for insurance.

Back in the early 70s when I started driving, adding a daughter to a parents' policy cost $0 and a son was maybe $100/year. My how things have changed.

Even though I am debt free, and have been saving from day 1, there is a good bit of truth in pointing out the differences in starting on your own now, vs the 70s. Much more expensive to move out of the parents basement even without the soy lattes and avocados.

It's more expensive now but pay has also increased.

You can go get a warehouse job as a simple packer and start at $18/hr
My first job was at Emery's 5 & 10 and paid $1.50/hr even though the minimum wage was $1.65. They didn't have to pay minimum wage because they had below a certain dollar level of sales. I can't imagine the wages available for high school students or uneducated employees today.

Mine went up $7,200.00 when my daughter first got insurance. Went down a little this go round and now it's only about $5,700.00 per year.

In college I had to pay my own insurance, dad called his agent and came up with a stupid high number - ~$2500. I started calling around to get it on my own, found out I could buy a second car ($700,) insure both ($500) on my own for less than half what my Dad's agent wanted......my dad changed agents about 2 months later.

My rate is going down like a fat girl at a frat party. Unless rolling thru stop signs, stopping on interstate merge lane, aggressive road rage, and dui are tracked.

Amazingly enough, I am actually worse in real life and simply cannot turn off my type A personality…..unless I am driving. When driving I am the most laid back dude for some reason.

My buddy is the most laid back dude in the world but turns into a complete psycho when driving. I always carry when I ride with him but it’s only a matter of time before he cuts the wrong person off and we are in a full blown shoot out.

What's the reason for your change in a vehicle?

Close call years ago?

No close call and honestly I have no idea.

I guess I view driving as just getting from point a to b and whether I drive like a maniac or slowly will barely change the outcome time wise.

But I am honestly guessing.

It is a requirement in VA, you either took it at school or through a private course but had to have it to get your DL. Insurance was much cheaper there also.

Yeah, but VA is like a gestapo state - they still ban radar detectors. Worse they always scraped my UT decal off the bottom of the rear window - had a hatchback, and you couldn't even see it in the rear view mirror.

I'm definitely more aggressive or whatever behind the wheel - not cutting people off or running signals or any of those things. Just more a heavy foot and less patience. I really can't explain it, but seeing a wide open road and a 55 MPH speed limit just tends to bring out the beast. - like a lot of you and people pushing covid shots; I guess we all have our triggers when it comes to others setting limits.
