I give it 49 years until the whole thing collapses.

Anyone care to speculate?

It won't fall, it just won't be what the founding fathers intended. Hell, it's already halfway there. Government just continues to strip away rights and we let it happen, all because they say it's for our safety. Country could be a lot different if the majority of the citizenry got off their asses and did something, but they won't because they're sheep. Politicians rely on that and we have yet to let them down.

since we're on a Vol board, the US was created with the possibility to produce something similar to UT's 1998 squad. Right now we're on a path toward the UT 2011 season being a high-water mark. Sure, UT football will still continue but it just isn't quite the same product

Different context. Previous empires relied upon their conquered lands and people to provide the resources necessary to maintain their power. Although for a variety of reasons we use foreign sources and have a global network for a wide variety of goods, the fact is we could survive at relatively the same level without any foreign support.

The only way we could "fall" is through a break up of the 50 states--that was tried and failed and I don't see it happening again.

We have too many natural resources to completely fail. Plenty of fertile land, water, timber and minerals. We could fall into a somewhat failed state where the police are powerless/corrupt to protect its citizens, and gangs control areas. People would still have jobs and go to work, but your commute would be a cannonball run

We will pass on the super power status just as every country has. The British, the French, the Soviets, etc have all fallen into a second rate power. It is crazy not to think we will, I believe we're in the final years of our super power status right now.

As soon as public service ceases to be the main concern of the citizens and they come to prefer to serve the state with their purse rather than their person, the state is already close to ruin. Are troops needed to march to war? they pay mercenaries and stay at home. Is it time to go to an assembly? They pay deputies and stay at home. Thanks to laziness and money, they end up with soldiers to enslave the country and deputies to sell it...

The English people believes itself to be free; it is gravely mistaken; it is free only during the election of Members of Parliament; as soon as the Members are elected, the people is enslaved; it is nothing. In the brief moments of its freedom, the English people makes such a use of that freedom that it deserves to lose it...

Where rights and freedom are everything, inconveniences are nothing.

J.J. Rousseau

Americans have spent the past century trading right for expedience and liberty for security.

I think the USA will prosper over the next 50 years, we are just in a slump.

If I thought for a moment that we would fail I would be in the process of relocating to Makati, Philippines or somewhere like that.

Isn't Neocon going to the Pacific? At least he finally made the jump.

This is probably realistic. Nothing inherently wrong with no longer being on top, I'll just have fewer reasons to chant U-S-A. Doesn't mean I'll stop.
