An offseason hunch on RBs…

He's a small back too. Can he get the tough yards consistently is my question
Good point. OLine will have a lot to say about it.
There was a great synergy last season between backs finding very limited holes (but real holes nonetheless and making big gains, especially after the midway point of the 3rd quarter.

Riggins and Alstott were tanks, but they didn't have the speed of Bo or Herschel. That rare combination of size, power and speed is what made Bo, Herschel and Jamal Lewis special.

We don't have a Bo or Hershel on our team, which was my point.

Our offensive scheme really creates holes for our running backs by streching the defensive alignment so severely from sideline to sideline. If they pack more defenders in the box to stop the run, then we throw the ball outside where we have leverage.

..or a Jamal Lewis. I agree with that point.

We could really use one, though. Imagne this offense having 240lbs RB like Bama often does. Or that C-Rod hoss, Kentucky had. I think such an asset woud scare the beejeebies out of everyone. Blazing speed, supplemented by a pneumatic pile driver.

Seldon coming out of the backfield will be extremely difficult to cover by a linebacker. So happy he’s playing for us. He’s gonna be special.

Go VOLS
Seldon has that Saquon Barkley build. Hope he can play the same.

Which 240 pound running back has bama had recently? The only one I can think of is Henry. And that was a minute ago.

Khalifa Keith is listed at 225 right now as a high school senior. He could well be that guy in a couple years.

I was referring to something I saw on Sports Talk j The commentor was mocking Saban's objection to fast tempo out of concern for player safety. Yet relishes his teams' rough play that leaves opponent players sore so much t affects their next. One example, the commentor threw out, was Saban didn't mind seeing a 240LBs RB maiming a safety. In other words, Saban's concern about uptempo endangering player safety was a load of Taurus excretion.

Jabari Small and Jaylen Wright will need to be better this year or they’ll be watching a whole lot of Dylan Sampson and DeSean Bishop from the sideline come fall. This offense with backs that are legitimate big play guys will be darn near impossible to stop with quality line play. Heupel knows this.
I think Small is limited from a talent stand point. But what exactly do you want Wright to be better at? He had 6 ypc and his number got better vs the SEC. He had over 8 ypc vs Clemson.

Bishop has gotten buzz in practice but he has a long, long way to go to take carries away from any of the 3 returning guys.

Not going to discuss WHO is running the ball. But our season is pretty much riding on whoever it is. We can't ask Milton to go out there and "just be Hooker". He lost the job to Hooker for a reason. That's not to say that Joe can't lead the team or put up numbers, but we all need to have a clear recognition that he is a step down from Hooker. The RB squad is going to have to take the pressure off Milton to carry the production on every play. Our RB is going to have to soften up the D with body blows before we go head hunting.

Bo and Hershel were rare creatures you rarely see in college FB, They were essentially NFL sized LB'ers playing as RBs. I don't think we have any such RBs on our team. Not since Jamal Lewis anyway. The NFL also had some of these creatures. John Riggins and Mike Alstott come to mind. They weren't called The Diesel and A-Train for nothing.

Maybe I used the wrong guys to point out my position. There are and have been many players who I would put in the group of backs that only need to be pointed the direction to run toward. Then stand back because the will and can run very well with this small amount of help....

Naw, you did fine. I happened to disagree, doesn't mean you're wrong. Point and shoot backs were probably the likes of Barry Sanders, Earl Campbell, Johnny Rodgers, Hershel Walker for sure, and Emmitt Smith, probably Gale Sayers as well.

Small has an injury history with his shoulder, Wright has had issues with ball security, Sampson issues with pass protection. I’m not ruling out anything this year. Best scenario is for Small and Wright to be the work horses and have spectacular years where Seldon and Bishop can be brought along slowly and perhaps even get a redshirt year.

I could see Small looking elsewhere as Wright almost took the keys last year and the young cats coming along nicely this spring. We will see. I could see us being a strong running team this year with an increased focus on establishing it and leaving Milton to take the top off here and there.

I feel more comfortable with our running back room this year than I have in the last 10-15 years. We have 4-5 who can and will rip a lot of yards against many of the defenses we will play. Add in our passing game and we will score a lot of points again this Fall.

Bishop isn’t going to be taking carries away from the upperclassmen as a walk on true freshman. Come on.
