Read more from The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office:
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office will not be sending our staff into the City of Portland. We will assist the Oregon State Police with their calls for service in Clackamas County as needed while their resources are deployed in Portland. – Statement from Sheriff Roberts
On Sunday, August 30th, I read that Governor Kate Brown announced a new plan to address the lawlessness happening in Portland. I was surprised to read that the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office was part of the plan since the Governor’s Office never contacted me.
Had Governor Brown discussed her plan with my office, I would have told her it’s about changing policy not adding resources. Increasing law enforcement resources in Portland will not solve the nightly violence and now, murder. The only way to make Portland safe again, is to support a policy that holds offenders accountable for their destruction and violence. That will require the DA to charge offenders appropriately and a decision by the Multnomah County Presiding Judge not to allow offenders released on their own recognizance, and instead require bail with conditions. The same offenders are arrested night after night, only to be released by the court and not charged with a crime by the DA’s Office. The next night they are back at it, endangering the lives of law enforcement and the community all over again.
For all of us in law enforcement, keeping our community safe is our first priority. Had Governor Brown asked me, I would have told her that no amount of human resources will stop the “cycle of violence” (her term) that is making Portland unsafe. For that to occur, the criminal justice system will need do its part and hold offenders accountable.
This response (sheriff Roberts) pretty much sums up my previous idea.
You re asking for more of the same people (cops) that you ve been reluctant to stand behind because its become politically easy to just lump all police officers and forces into one group, to come in and undo weeks of lawlessness on the streets of Portland.
If you hold to your current form, the sheriff gives you a perfectly clear and easily understood response for what will happen by just adding more officers on the street. Nothing.
As I said earlier, if her and the mayor are really interested in regaining control of Portland, it aint gonna be pretty.
If you look at the arrest reports, there may not be a many votes to lose as you'd think. If they would just keep all repeat offenders in jail for 2 weeks, I bet things would really die down. That and limit the "press" credentials.No. It won't be.. This will be no easy task. I don't believe lethal force will be required, but using older, more proven tactics that are now frowned upon, may be necessary.
Question is does the local and state leadership have the intestinal fortitude to continue and clear out the rioters, at the risk of losing their votes come future elections.
Have to wait and see.
It doesn't matter what tactics the police use if the people are processed and released the next morning. It also increases the risk for a use of force lawsuit. There's zero upside to being a part of this if you don't have to be.No. It won't be.. This will be no easy task. Don’t blame them. Their deputies belong in their neighborhoods no reason those sheriffs should send their deputies into that hell hole. Good job on those sheriffs. The governor needs to use HER resources the state police and Wheelers resources. Those should be available since Wheeler isn’t using them.
