Ali Abunimah, a Palestinian rights activist in Chicago who helps run Electronic Intifada, said that he met Obama several times at Palestinian and Arab American community events. At one, a 2000 fundraiser at a private home, Obama called for the U.S. to take an "even-handed" approach toward Israel, Abunimah wrote in an article on the website last year. He did not cite Obama's specific criticisms.

Abunimah, in a Times interview and on his website, said Obama seemed sympathetic to the Palestinian cause but more circumspect as he ran for the U.S. Senate in 2004. At a dinner gathering that year, Abunimah said, Obama greeted him warmly and said privately that he needed to speak cautiously about the Middle East.

Abunimah quoted Obama as saying that he was sorry he wasn't talking more about the Palestinian cause, but that his primary campaign had constrained what he could say.

how many times must he take back things he has done in the past before people start to realize this guy is a wackjob telling lies to become president.

He is all about CHANGE (his story whenever it benefits him)

Just further proof that he will tell whoever is listening what they want to hear only to retract and or contridict himself later. Oprah's world dominance hangs in the balance......

Because he is professionally good-looking.

Well, I have heard that point being made so I can't disagree with ya there. That's really sad it comes down to looks. But hey, look how we are living in todays time so that really doesn't surprise me.

How is this a red flag?

Because he has yet to declare his direction (except to say change), and those things he does take a stand on he seems to back track or make excuses for later. This is just another example of how little we know about the direction he wants to take this country in.

a) hanging out with anti-semitics again, b) his strong arab connection and c) changing his views AGAIN when they become unpopular. how many of these things have to come out before we have to assume he believes SOME of this stuff.

His supporters would say we should take less of a side here between the Palestinians and Israel. Let us not forget that when Israel forcefully removed its own people from their homes to concede land to the Palestinians it was later used to fire rockets or mortars into Israel. I don't blame Israel for not wanting to budge again.

Sounds like every other candidate in this election

I fail to see how this is an issue. Saying that the United States should be more even handed in its Middle Eastern policy is not being Anti-Semitic. Sympathizing with the "Palestinian cause" is not being Anti-Semitic. I see more problems with constantly setting the guy up as a straw man than I do with Obama who has on many occasions spoken openly and honestly and paid the price in our PC political system that values dishonesty and pandering.

I can't wait for this to reach mess to reach McCain.

Any one want to lay odds on how long McCain will keep up the nice guy campaign?

Why should he? Both sides seem to believe he is their friend, generally that means you can arbitrate something.

But you have to admit for a guy who says so little about his direction if president he sure does seem to have had to back track or explain an awful lot. That is what makes me so wary of him.

a) you are right, he needs to distance himself from the more outspoken of the Palestinian rights people

b) ha! How strong of an Arab connection does our current president have?

c) I may be completely wrong, but I was under the impression that he has always been very pro-Israel. Just because he believes in the rights of the Palestinians doesn't mean he can't also be pro-Israel. One shouldn't have to pick sides here.

10 seconds after the nomination is sealed up. Mcain isnt going to do anything though the 529's will do the dirty work.

Besides Wright, what has he had to backtrack on?

That is certain, but how many times will he come out and say how terrible the adds are?

I mean, his campaign people asked Bill Cunningham to do what he did and McCain comes out on his white horse blasting Cunningham.

Something has to give at some point.

In and of itself, the Palestinian cause is just. They only want to be recognized and get certain pieces of land back. Agreeing with some of the wackjobs that operate in the area would definitely be anti-Semitic.
